What are the chances of a hatchling inheriting the iridescent gene if both parents have it?

Should be 100% if both parents have it ^^

100% :) If both parents have the same gene, the hatchling is guaranteed to inherit it.

Oh okay. c:
How about if only one parent has it?

@Aquila - It depends on what gene the other parent has. Shimmer is a gem gene, so it'd be 50% if it was paired with another gem gene, <50% if paired with a treasure gene, and even lower if paired with Basic. (I don't know the exact percentages for the last two cases, sorry!)

Is it possible for a hatchling to spontaneously develop a gene like shimmer, iridescent, etc? Or can it only be acquired through buying the item and through breeding from parents that have it?

Spontaneous gene generation is not a feature of Flight Rising. You'd need to introduce the gene with a scroll, or the hatchling will have to inherit it from one of their parents.
