Ramaz is uncertain. Sounds like he’s being condescended to. But he’s not gonna lash out, his track record’s horrific. “Attack while we’re with you, or for the rest of the game?”

“Well, you know what I’d prefer.” {roll: conditional/indefinite} “But it’s not too much to ask for peace while I give you sanctuary, no?”

Holyknight continues to die a slow and painful death alone; 3 lives left.

Meanwhile, Chaplin spread: by some miracle Echo is once again immune, but Ramaz is less fortunate. It’s unnoticed for now, though; instead, the lads focus on trying to heal Ramaz, and I’m going to make this more difficult than the coinflip that was Mitzi’s because Chaplin has way fewer days left (or well okay double-checking not really, but it’s been written more severe so w/e):

Luckily for Chaplin, it’s effective—just short of a full cure (she’s back to being a Carrier), but enough to let her sleep soundly as dawn breaks.

Ramaz is relieved. {He returns the spoils/He doesn’t return a thing}, however; maybe he’ll have a change of heart yet, but for now, he’s got to see if she’s better by morning. It could still be placebo. (It’s not, the rolls just confirmed, but he wouldn’t know that.)

Echo would like a spare moment with Chaplin, just to see if she’s more open to his ideas. He {gets one/doesn’t get it} by convincing Ramaz to go grab some extra supplies; Ramaz is loathe to leave his sister alone, but has to admit Echo hasn’t slit their throats yet, and also the stuffiness of three dragons in a slapdash tent is driving him nuts.

Chaplin is thankful for the healing, of course, {but not enough to trust Echo/and it’s enough to hear Echo out}. (SKYDANCER MALES CAN’T WIN HERE.) She still listens, mind, the thinly-veiled talk of not having to participate in the death games if they don’t have to, of being stronger together… but ultimately, she has doubts. Echo only asked for conditional peace, after all; was he hoping they’d just go with it from there, bond in the process?

No, {she tells him/she doesn’t tell him} her true motives. He seems… naive, at best. Chaplin and Ramaz have had to fend for themselves for ages; they don’t always get along, but they have no one else. The game offers them a chance to finally stop having to struggle; win dragon cash, get off the streets, make a real home. They can’t do that if they tear down… whatever system is running all this.

(So what if there can only be one winner? That is a rule Chaplin will be happy to disregard, when the time comes.)

Echo is… frustrated, to say the least. But since Chaplin didn’t offer her tragic backstory, he has to assume he’s at least planted the seed, and she’s just playing her cards close while they’re on his turf.

He sees them off without a fight… even though Ramaz took his stuff.

Hmmm. Quiet day, somber day.

I’m half-tempted to give Echo immunity just genetically because he’s dodged the disease bullet A Lot Of Times (or so it feels, I’m not counting), and also it’d be an anticlimactic way to go. …So, yeah, heck it, I won’t roll for him this round.

It’s not that the sponsors are watching his every move—they are, he knows that. It’s that, he believes, this must be another summons, another mission… Is he being re-assigned a ward? Did he make a mistake letting that skydancer get away yesterday? When Echo approaches, Moxie is {snippy[s]/cordial[/s]}. It’s just small talk, if even that; Echo has second thoughts the moment Moxie bares a fang, and just as quickly excuses himself. The sponsors have nothing for Moxie. Seashore is {receptive[s]/uninterested[/s]}. This isn’t a good place to discuss alliances, despite the ceasefire, but she agrees to meet Echo later in the day for more confidential talk. As-is, she {detects his true intentions[s]/assumes this is strategy only[/s]}. Flutter may have received Mustard’s welcome on entry, but the two haven’t remained close. When he sees Echo again he’s {[s]interested/[/s]confused}; hey, weren’t you friends with Mustard? (Er, not exactly—) You know how he’s been? Flutter hasn’t heard from him in what feels like forever, it was nice to think he had a friend here but apparently not.... The naivety simultaneously deters and intrigues Echo. He {presses just a bit further[s]/decides not to risk it[/s]}; Flutter recalls minding his own business, leaving the Southern Icefield for more colorful pastures, and then blacking out before he could know what hit him. Strange, that! Then he woke up here, or just outside it, he’s not sure; it seemed he’d… agreed to something? The memory’s fuzzy. And then those three caused a scene, and— Flutter shudders. Best not to think about it, right? Well… Echo goes for it: maybe he should, actually. And he can meet Echo later to talk about it. I’ll leave that to a roll. Opalesque is… preoccupied. The lucky sucker picked up an egg during the levelup grind (and technically so did Flutter but I’m ignoring that for lore, for now), and while I’m not hatching yet another dragon, I did pick up the first Fire fodder! (And gave Opal +3 VIT points, so the bonus level means something.) Before that, though, enter Echo. He’s careful with this one, knowing full well that Opalesque’s suspicion could just as easily turn on him. Opal {considers[s]/is indeed suspicious[/s]} Echo’s words, however. (Ohhh, this is working out SO well for lore >8Dc) See, he got this… bizarre message from (presumably) the sponsors, and it’s got this dragon on it.... Echo suggest they discuss tonight, just short of side-eyeing Moxie. (Moxie {[s]does not notice/[/s]notices}, but makes no indication.) Opalesque agrees. ~
22. Now Is Not The Time!
H. okay wait lemme roll this first and see if it’ll come up in the Rebel Alliance Scene… RNG picked Echo and AULAIT hewwo?????? I. Okay. Okay, no, wait, I can work with this. We’ll get back to this. First, though, rolls for the not-nest: only 1 (thank god), and oh are you kidding me the name is totally unrelated but it works PERFECT okay ok okay. Okay. I swear this is a weird coincidence??? You’ll see when I get there. Ok. Let’s do this. ----- The night is still when Seashore and Opal arrive, {in approximate tandem[s]/one after the other[/s]}. Echo’s heart thuds. Flutter {[s]doesn’t arrive/[/s]joins too}, before long. Seems they’ve come to a silent agreement. Echo cuts to the chase. “Something is very, very wrong.” He relays Flutter’s story, presents the note Opal received. The four of them have been drafted to a death game, and there’s more incoming from these mysterious “sponsors”—but why? And for whose entertainment, really? Is escape possible? I’m not even going to roll for this: the group comes to a solemn agreement, the game is needless. As it happens, Seashore remembers her motive for signing up—to {protect her honor[s]/reach the promised lands/reunite with a lost friend/protect her family[/s]}, which is damn silly in retrospect. That dark skydancer, the sister, when she attacked? Seashore’s heart wasn’t in it. She’d find so much more “honor” in tearing this down. Opalesque {remembers, too[s]/remembers nothing[/s]}, now that they’re talking about it; he wanted to {protect his family}. It sounded like if he didn’t follow the stranger, obey without question or fuss, they’d kill his beloved… His throat closes at the thought. He can’t protect them from here. Echo, like Flutter, remembers nothing. There’s no pattern, then, no reason, no one thing dragging them all together. But they have what might be a lead: that note. {AuLait kills the mood[s]/AuLait is not involved[/s]}, suddenly. He, erm, couldn’t help but overhear, and don’t worry, he won’t tell anyone, he wasn’t even sure what any of this is about, and—the note? About another dragon waiting? He… he got one, too. ----- I am ending on a cliffhanger because, while I am completely winging this “what even is the arena/death game about” mystery, I already have the mystery duo and want to completely wing their introduction—so like, no event rolls next round, or if there are then they’re just for those not in the alliance. SPEAKING OF the rebel alliance, they’re all getting +1 bonus life for camp (including Echo why not, he stocked up today; and AuLait, because Echo takes immediate sympathy). And alas, they also have to roll for the disease 8,) {[s]roll for spread, then escalation[/s] / roll for escalation, then spread} ok phew RNG chose the merciful option. Seashore, Opalesque, Flutter: …Seashore and Flutter are now Diseased (will affect lore later), both with 2 rounds left 8( Wow, I have never kicked myself for a self-imposed mechanic so hard, that was such a good/bad idea because the growing attachment is real.... Echo and AuLait’s chances of Carrying: {[s]half/[/s]third}. Both safe. Okay, with this much sickness around Echo really might as well be immune; AuLait, though, only just got here, so he’s on thin ice. OH and elsewhere: Ramaz has 3 rounds left, and Mustard dies anticlimactically. The alliance encounters his body: {will[s]/won’t[/s]}. Oh, Flutter’s not gonna like that.... And AuLait, still a bit clueless, had no idea where to go.

Meanwhile, those who do Feast have a bountiful day indeed.

82498171.png
Echo, recognizing no one, sees no less than four opportunities to roll for alliances—especially Opalesque, whose hesitance towards Mustard’s welcome is still decently fresh in Echo’s head.

Randomized order of approach: Moxie, Seashore, Flutter, Opalesque. Nice, saving the best for last; even if Echo’s attempt is fruitless, Opalesque is gonna have something special ;V

84200694.png
Moxie taps his claws as he eats. It’s not that the sponsors are watching his every move—they are, he knows that. It’s that, he believes, this must be another summons, another mission… Is he being re-assigned a ward? Did he make a mistake letting that skydancer get away yesterday?

When Echo approaches, Moxie is {snippy/cordial}. It’s just small talk, if even that; Echo has second thoughts the moment Moxie bares a fang, and just as quickly excuses himself.

The sponsors have nothing for Moxie.

84745473.png
Seashore is {receptive/uninterested}. This isn’t a good place to discuss alliances, despite the ceasefire, but she agrees to meet Echo later in the day for more confidential talk. As-is, she {detects his true intentions/assumes this is strategy only}.

84761721.png
Flutter may have received Mustard’s welcome on entry, but the two haven’t remained close. When he sees Echo again he’s {interested/confused}; hey, weren’t you friends with Mustard? (Er, not exactly—) You know how he’s been? Flutter hasn’t heard from him in what feels like forever, it was nice to think he had a friend here but apparently not....

The naivety simultaneously deters and intrigues Echo. He {presses just a bit further/decides not to risk it}; Flutter recalls minding his own business, leaving the Southern Icefield for more colorful pastures, and then blacking out before he could know what hit him. Strange, that! Then he woke up here, or just outside it, he’s not sure; it seemed he’d… agreed to something? The memory’s fuzzy. And then those three caused a scene, and—

Flutter shudders. Best not to think about it, right?

Well… Echo goes for it: maybe he should, actually. And he can meet Echo later to talk about it.

I’ll leave that to a roll.

84774339.png
Opalesque is… preoccupied. The lucky sucker picked up an egg during the levelup grind (and technically so did Flutter but I’m ignoring that for lore, for now), and while I’m not hatching yet another dragon, I did pick up the first Fire fodder! (And gave Opal +3 VIT points, so the bonus level means something.)

Before that, though, enter Echo. He’s careful with this one, knowing full well that Opalesque’s suspicion could just as easily turn on him. Opal {considers/is indeed suspicious} Echo’s words, however. (Ohhh, this is working out SO well for lore >8Dc) See, he got this… bizarre message from (presumably) the sponsors, and it’s got this dragon on it....

Echo suggest they discuss tonight, just short of side-eyeing Moxie. (Moxie {does not notice/notices}, but makes no indication.) Opalesque agrees.

okay wait lemme roll this first and see if it’ll come up in the Rebel Alliance Scene… RNG picked Echo and AULAIT hewwo??????

The night is still when Seashore and Opal arrive, {in approximate tandem/one after the other}. Echo’s heart thuds. Flutter {doesn’t arrive/joins too}, before long.

As it happens, Seashore remembers her motive for signing up—to {protect her honor/reach the promised lands/reunite with a lost friend/protect her family}, which is damn silly in retrospect. That dark skydancer, the sister, when she attacked? Seashore’s heart wasn’t in it. She’d find so much more “honor” in tearing this down.

Opalesque {remembers, too/remembers nothing}, now that they’re talking about it; he wanted to {protect his family}.

{AuLait kills the mood/AuLait is not involved}, suddenly. He, erm, couldn’t help but overhear, and don’t worry, he won’t tell anyone, he wasn’t even sure what any of this is about, and—the note? About another dragon waiting? He… he got one, too.

I am ending on a cliffhanger because, while I am completely winging this “what even is the arena/death game about” mystery, I already have the mystery duo and want to completely wing their introduction—so like, no event rolls next round, or if there are then they’re just for those not in the alliance.

SPEAKING OF the rebel alliance, they’re all getting +1 bonus life for camp (including Echo why not, he stocked up today; and AuLait, because Echo takes immediate sympathy). And alas, they also have to roll for the disease 8,)

{roll for spread, then escalation / roll for escalation, then spread} ok phew RNG chose the merciful option. Seashore, Opalesque, Flutter: …Seashore and Flutter are now Diseased (will affect lore later), both with 2 rounds left 8(
Wow, I have never kicked myself for a self-imposed mechanic so hard, that was such a good/bad idea because the growing attachment is real....

Echo and AuLait’s chances of Carrying: {half/third}. Both safe. Okay, with this much sickness around Echo really might as well be immune; AuLait, though, only just got here, so he’s on thin ice.

OH and elsewhere: Ramaz has 3 rounds left, and Mustard dies anticlimactically. The alliance encounters his body: {will/won’t}. Oh, Flutter’s not gonna like that....

In a wild twist of coincidence that I could not have planned if I tried, both future came pre-named—and respectively they are Shieldbreaker and Shieldbearer. I don’t think they were even sold by the same person, WTH.

They are going to get ~backstory rolls~, because even if they die two seconds in it’ll be more compelling that way: {they remember why they’re here / or don’t}, {they actually plan to be loyal to their assigned dragon / or not}, and {they’ll be easy to convince to rebel / or not}. If they remember, the incentive is {positive (could get something) / negative (avoids a consequence)}.

And did they know each other before? I’m gonna toss the roll and say yes because the name similarity is a waste otherwise.

Shieldbreaker: Remembers why; it’s positive, was promised {wealth/glory/kinship}. Plans to be loyal, but will not be inclined to rebel. …Oh, okay, so like a mercenary? A mercenary who’d happily kill for an assigned master, but not go so far as breaking the rules that promises cash in the first place.
Shieldbearer: Also remembers; it’s negative, was avoiding {punishment/harm to self/harm to others}. Does not plan to stay loyal, but also won’t be easily-convinced to rebel. Sounds like a convict on the run to me.

Wow, neither of you sound very shield-y. Hired assassin duo? -breaker, the skydancer, was caught and on death row; -bearer, the aberration, took this as a really unconventional job.

Oh, and they’ve been assigned to Opalesque and AuLait, respectively. That’s gonna be a wild dynamic—if it even develops. Frankly I think a fight will break out as soon as it becomes clear these two aren’t too keen on rebellion, but we’ll see!

Life count: 4 for Shieldbreaker, 6(?!!) for Shieldbearer. Also I’m already getting them mixed up so I’m gonna call them SK and SR, respectively, which still looks similar but will be less of a **** to retype.

They have lives to return to. The thought seems to come from outside Moxie, but maybe it’s one of his heads playing tricks. Hard to stop and think like this. Hard to stop.

{AuLait cries out. / All goes silent.}

Finally, finally, an opening— Moxie slashes at the closest dragon, scrambles, runs.

(-1 life for Flutter (0+1 left), Opalesque (0+1), and Seashore (4+1) for the very prolonged fight.)

~

Ramaz blinks, slowly. His head’s pounding. Hard to think. Someone’s standing over him, but he can’t tell who.

“Ch…” His throat is dry. “Chap…lin…?”

The stranger doesn’t respond.

We’re not done here yet.

1.Seashore!**(2) 4+1 || 2.Echo! 3+3 || 3.Ramaz**(3) 2+2 | 4.Chaplin* || 5.Moxie 1 | 6.Opalesque!* 0+1 | 7.Flutter!* 0+1 | 8.AuLait! 5+1 | 9.Shieldbreaker-SK 4 | 10.Shieldbearer-SR 6
modified hungerlocke, round 14–15

Actually, after that bloodbath, there’s no way they don’t stop to rest.

Not much is said; there’s not much to say; everything and nothing.

Moxie & AuLait are now Carriers: nope.
Of the Carriers, now Diseased: Opalesque yes, Flutter no. Opal has 5 rounds.

1.Seashore!**(1) 4+1 || 2.Echo! 3+3 || 3.Ramaz**(2) 2+2 || 4.Moxie 1 | 5.Opalesque!**(5) 0+1 | 6.Flutter!* 0+1 | 7.AuLait! 5+1 | 8.Shieldbreaker-SK 4 | 9.Shieldbearer-SR 6

Also, frankly, after All That, I’m going to skim over Mustard; it was mostly just going to be miserable anyway. Or like, I guess it could point towards a Larger Mystery (game isn’t just for entertainment, “souls” are also going towards some larger cause? shout-out to a current GM, I am stealing your idea here yes.)…? IDK, I’ll retcon it if I have to.

It’s just refreshing to get all dramatic for a bit, even if (especially if) it involves names like “Flutter” and “AuLait.” Like pokémon Nuzlockes, or ye olde battlecat fanfice; long-term characterization be darned, just roll for a couple gut-punches when the time’s right and wing the rest.

Fun stuff!!

Heck it, there’s another full day before they meet the Shield duo:

attempts to cure Seashore and Ramaz: 1 is a crit fail and kills instead; 2 stabilizes to Carrier status; 3 cures fully.
oh my god they both die okay uhh. Well. That doesn’t make a Great story so I am using an authorial override and just nuking their bonus lives instead. This still ain’t promising for either, though; Seashore’s at 0 Disease-days so she’ll start losing those 4 normal lives round by round, while Ramaz has 1 day before Disease-mageddon and then only 2 in reserve.

Oh right Opalesque too: Cured, actually! Nice.

Flutter gets worse: nop
AuLait becomes a Carrier: nah
Moxie, meanwhile, earns A Favor/Pointer from the sponsors (I don’t actually have a plan for this I just think it’d be cool): oh, no, guess not. I’m sure we’ll see him again some way or another, though.
