Home of Beltram Mining Co. [b]House of Dust[/b] — A combination hotel and bar very popular with Alabaster locals, especially the miners working for Beltram Mining Co., as we’re paying for your lodging! [b]Salt Pit[/b] — A huge, sprawling gypsum cave system within Alabaster territory. Houses not just rich gypsum deposits but anhydrite, halite, sylvite, limestone, dolostone, shale, and even gold and other precious ores and gems as you descend deeper into the caves. [b]Beltram Mining Company[/b] — A mining company founded by Guillermo Beltram in response to the discovery of the Salt Pit. The basis for the town of Alabaster. Beltram Mining Co. is also responsible for the desalination of the water found in the Salt Pit’s abundant brine springs and are the main supplier of Alabaster’s drinking water. [b]Kette[/b] — A four-dragon mining group sent down into the Salt Pit to mine for minerals. [b]Well-Runners[/b] — Dragons who build piping in the mines to bring underground water to the surface for desalination. Work in a kette system. [b]Cleaners[/b] — Pairs of dragons trained primarily for combat within the caves. Normally sent out as recon before mining operations to clean out insectoid swarms. [b]Insectoid[/b] — A peculiar and aggressive order of large arachnid-like creatures that congregate and live in the salt pit. They are incredibly hostile to dragons and all Beltram Mining Co. miners must be trained and equipped to deal with insectoid swarms. The existence of insectoids is thought to be somehow linked to the Salt Pit’s close proximity to Arcane territory. [b]Comlink[/b] — An incredible feat of engineering on behalf of Beltram Mining Co. A compact, handheld device used for communication over long distances, scanning immediate surroundings for mineral veins and insectoids, and search and retrieval of information. Comlinks for home use are currently in production. [b]The Sisters[/b] — A nun coven dedicated to the Lightweaver. They travel Sornieth to spread the word of Her Holiness, but have recently begun to settle permanently in Alabaster. They have been welcomed into the town with open arms, as they are very wealthy benefactors for Beltram Mining Co. The Sisters are responsible for the ongoing religious shift and conversion of many Alabaster citizens from the Earthshaker to the Lightweaver. Mercader clicked her tongue as the ink began to blot and pool onto the paper. She’d need to get a new copy. She leaned back into her chair and clicked the buzzer with a huff. “ID number. Who do I have to blame for ruining my documents?” The knocking immediately stopped; whoever was on the other side deliberated on an answer. Then, quietly, “69874945 and 67971974. But this is [i]important[/i].” The voice urged, somewhere between wavering and firm. Mercader searched the ID numbers in her Comlink. She glanced between the results and the door dubiously. [i]Persia and Lugalella[/i]? The pair of mild-mannered Cleaners were certainly not the type to intrude so rudely into their boss’s office without reason. Curiosity piqued, Mercader clicked the buzzer again. “The door’s unlocked.” The two shuffled in awkwardly. Those who found themselves deep in the Salt Pit for extended periods of time had a hard time acclimating themselves back into the surface world. Her father always found it amusing, but the sight made Mercader feel some odd emotion she couldn’t really place. Persia and Lugalella dipped their heads in stiff reverence. Gypsum and insectoid blood was caked into their scales and gear. They were trailing it all onto her expensive rug. “Did you two just come out of the pit!?” Mercader noisily clambered out of her chair, wanting to shoo them back out into the hallway. “I can’t believe it. Look at what you’re doing to my floors! What could possibly be so—“ Her breath hitched when she noticed the strange, brown furball Persia was dutifully clutching in her talons. She could make out a wriggling tail in the unfamiliar mass. A very bug-like tail. Mercader shrieked and staggered backwards, retreating to her desk. “Did you seriously bring one of those [i]things[/i] to the surface!? And into my [i]office[/i]!?” “Wait, wait, wait..!” Persia slung the creature into one arm and tried to reach out to Mercader with the other. This was not reassuring. Lugalella decided to take over in her partner’s stead. “Insectoids don’t have fur. We came ‘cuz we’re sure this isn’t an insectoid. Well, not entirely.” As Lugalella explained as calmly as she could, the wriggling mass in Persia’s talons finally turned to face Mercader. It’s frighteningly large eyes were the rich brown of an Earth-marked dragon. Mercader’s heart sank. That’s why we came to you.” Mercader wrinkled her snout at mention of the mayor. She stared at the bug-dragon [i]thing[/i] in silence for a solid minute. “We don’t need to tell Vladislava anything. Not right now.” Sighing, she once again rose from her seat, seemingly coming to a decision. “We aren’t gonna tell her? But this is—“ “I know what this is.” Mercader pushed past her employees and into the hallway, beckoning them to follow her.
