new aquatic dragon possibilities on the horizon? oh boy i have Opinions about this. i rise from the depths as my time has come, at long last... (/has been waiting for an aquatic breed since literally 2013/)
(Shonisaurus, Mothership, by RudolfHima.)
so! since we're optimistically expecting a water-element ancient breed in relation to the new digsite, i'm hoping it is based on some relevant real-world sea animals. specifically, prehistoric marine reptiles, as they're kinda draconic already if you squint.
as per the time-honored FR tradition, let's throw some cool designs at the wall and see if any of them stick for the final reveal. at least something in our wild, copious guessing has to be right, statistically.
(Lipeurodon ferox, by Bob Nicholls.)
this is FR’s one chance to make a True Leviathan Dragon and have it actually make sense in terms of like... you know..... physics (’cause no need to make it really able to fly/ walk). this is ALSO FR’s one chance to base a design entirely off of prehistoric marine reptiles and have it be both- perfectly- thematically and visually appropriate.
so if they don’t go with an gigantic, ancient aquatic reptile then i will be Disappointed. like not mad if they don’t but. c’mon. this was your SHOT guys.
(Nothosaurus mirabilis, by Gabriel Ugueto.)
(Plesiosuchus, by Olorotitan.)
anyway with that in mind... some design inspo could be taken from groups like the mosasaurs, ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs/ pliosaurs, nothosaurs, & metriorhynchids. there are plenty of others to draw from, but these guys are probably the most recognizable/ ‘dragon-ey’ to a wider audience.
most likely source of inspo here would probably be mosasurs or plesiosaurs honestly, given their popularity. a 'nessie' dragon has been something i've seen people suggesting for years (though here's hoping FR doesn't give them broken, outdated swan necks...)
(Mosasaurus hoffmanni, by Arvalis.)
(Mosasaurus hoffmanni, by LittleBaardo.)
all have traits that would both: A.) be extremely unique/ cool on a dragon and B.) instantly translate to a strong elemental/ visual design. mixing features from several clades with the site’s art style into one aquatic dragon would create a very distinct breed whose silhouette stands out well!
of course, things like additional fins/ flippers/ dorsal sails could be added to complete the draconic look, and allow for secondary gene placement. ooh, and the line-breaking terts could be wild... my bet is they at least get fans.
(Thalassomedon, by Swordlord3d.)
(Lagenanectes richterae, by Jahn J. Hornung.)
anyway yeah ancient marine reptile dragon please, i’ll take 100 in which ever flavor they got. (lmao watch them not even use one of these haha RIP) though if the design is at least sea serpent/ leviathan-esque, i’ll be happy!
if this is truly a water breed they're releasing, my only request is that the thing at least convincingly looks like it could swim. like that's my bare minimum, for the water dragon to look like it lives in the water. is that too much to ask for? (/side-eyes guardians/)
anybody have any other creatures they're hoping to see reflected in the design? or ideas on the teaser? let's speculate wildly! :->
