Taking off at a run, Luckystone leapt into the air, his wings beating quickly to help him gain altitude. He only had a vague idea of where they had headed, but at least the summer sun would give him more time to search. The young leader didn’t want to think about if this had happened during the winter darkness. More and more trees passed beneath Luckystone as he flew over the forest toward the mountains, obscuring the forest floor in places where the trees clumped together. It felt like he’d been searching for days when Luckystone found the elk herd as they worked their way over a ridge, but he wasn’t sure. Had it only been a few hours? His wings ached from all the flying and when he didn’t see any sign of Lightfoot or Swiftrunner near the herd Luckystone’s heart lodged in his throat as he scanned the surrounding forest. ‘What way did they come from…? Ah–’ Luckystone circled over a section of the forest where he thought he had spotted the trail the elk herd had taken up the ridge. The entire clearing was covered in a thick layer of ice - the trees, the ground, the rocks - everything. The only places not covered in it was a trail of footprints left by the elk herd as they left the clearing. Some areas even had clusters of large spikes of ice reaching for the sky. Luckystone flew closer, worried about what he might find. There was no way this had been caused normally - the air practically sang with ice magic. ‘And where there’s magic, there’s usually other dragons…’ Luckystone’s attention was caught by an unusually shaped rock near one side of the clearing. The Fae drew on his own magic and that of the land around him. His eyes closed in concentration as he put his tiny paws on Swiftrunner’s face, willing the ice to break apart and shatter to the ground. “Swiftrunner, wake up! Please!” Luckystone brushed lingering ice crystals off of the Wildclaw’s skin, going so far as to climb on top of his body to clear the ice away faster. He catalogued his friend’s injuries as he worked, not liking what he found. Swiftrunner’s wings had been damaged by frostbite - the edges blackened - but the most concerning was the Wildclaw’s eyes. Ice eyes had different variations; some tied to parentage, while others were tied to one’s connection with the Icewarden. Swiftrunner’s eyes had been directly exposed to the ice for an unknown amount of time. Luckystone wasn’t sure what would happen, but it couldn’t be good. His friend’s eyes were uncharacteristically cloudy and tinged with red. Luckystone’s thoughts were interrupted when Swiftrunner’s chest drew in a shaky breath, “--s-one…” He quickly flew back to his friend’s head, gently placing a paw on the Wildclaws forehead. Swiftrunner’s eyes were partly closed now and unfocused. “Take it easy, just focus on breathing,” Luckystone spoke quietly. He paused to blink away some tears, “You’re hurt. Injured wings at the very least, and I’m not sure about your eyes…” “--on’t… care…,” Swiftrunner’s voice wavered as he spoke, “Light— – taken… Leave me…” The Wildclaw coughed in pain after trying to grin reassuringly at his friend, “…I’ll catch… up.” Luckystone froze, “Taken?” He’d been preoccupied by finding the ice-covered body of his friend and had forgotten to check the area for his mate. His eyes around the clearing, heart pounding with growing dread, “By who?” “By… what.” ___________________________________________________________ This hunting trip has been rated zero stars, 10/10 do not recommend. @Pyrouge @Frostwyvern @Vicegrips @Avalonian @Katta ___________________________________________________________ Thread Info | Table of Contents | Location | Clan Members | Culture | Gallery | Other

Something was wrong, Luckystone was sure of it.

Normal hunts for his mate and friend could last a few days to a week. This one shouldn’t have taken that long, not with a known herd practically on their doorstep. He paced in front of the hanging hides that led to the outside, trying to figure out what to do.

‘…Lightfoot and Swiftrunner said they were only after one or two elk… I think closer to the mountain ridge? Ugh…!’ Luckystone’s head fins flared with his frustration as he stopped in front of the hides, ‘I’ve got to do something, not just stay here… What if they need me?’

Pep talk finished, the little Fae pushed through the hide-covered doorway and squinted as his eyes adjusted to the sunlight outside. Luckystone wasn’t sure if he’d be of any help, but he couldn’t just abandon them if there was a chance Lightfoot and Swiftrunner were in trouble.

Ah–’

Luckystone circled over a section of the forest where he thought he had spotted the trail the elk herd had taken up the ridge. He gave one last look over his shoulder in the direction the elk had disappeared before retracing their steps.
______________

Luckystone almost didn’t see the clearing until the sun caused the treetops to sparkle as he flew by. He veered back toward it and shivered from the cold as he got closer, flapping frantically to come to a halt when he spotted it.

‘And where there’s magic, there’s usually other dragons…’

Luckystone’s attention was caught by an unusually shaped rock near one side of the clearing. Ice had grown in thick fractals across its surface and formed spikes on one end, almost like horns.

‘Not almost!!’

He landed roughly on the ground nearest the spikes, eyes wide as Luckystone recognized the scared face of his friend beneath the layers of ice.

Luckystone’s thoughts were interrupted when Swiftrunner’s chest drew in a shaky breath, “--s-one…”

He quickly flew back to his friend’s head, gently placing a paw on the Wildclaws forehead. Swiftrunner’s eyes were partly closed now and unfocused.

“Take it easy, just focus on breathing,” Luckystone spoke quietly. He paused to blink away some tears, “You’re hurt. Injured wings at the very least, and I’m not sure about your eyes…”

“--on’t… care…,” Swiftrunner’s voice wavered as he spoke, “Light— – taken… Leave me…” The Wildclaw coughed in pain after trying to grin reassuringly at his friend, “…I’ll catch… up.”

Luckystone froze, “Taken?” He’d been preoccupied by finding the ice-covered body of his friend and had forgotten to check the area for his mate. His eyes around the clearing, heart pounding with growing dread, “By who?”

“By… what.”

His head fins had pinned down against his neck with anxiety. Swiftrunner’s breathing had become more stable and Luckystone had been able to reverse some of the damage from the ice, but he was definitely not in the condition to join in a rescue mission. Definitely not if there would be any fights. It was only after the Wildclaw had managed to stand up and walk a few shaky steps to the edge of the clearing that Luckystone felt better about starting his search for Lightfoot. “Please stay put,” Luckystone said, “I’ll feel a lot better if you don’t try to get back to the lair on your own.” “…Don’t worry about me… won’t move a muscle,” Swiftrunner assured his friend as he settled down against the trees. Luckystone eyed him skeptically. “Go on… I’ve been in worse scraps… than this.” Luckystone didn’t have much choice in the matter - he needed to find his mate before more time passed. “We’ll come back for you.” He paused until Swiftrunner nodded in acknowledgement. With a few quick wingbeats, the Fae launched himself into the air and out of the clearing. ______________ Lightfoot groaned in pain as she woke up surrounded by darkness and a bitter cold. Her eyes refused to open at first, fused shut by a layer of frost, but eventually broken. Something heavy blocked her view and the rest of her body did not respond when she tried to get up. ‘Be still,’ warned a stern voice in her head. Lightfoot didn’t recognize the voice at all, but the young mirror knew a threat when she heard one and stopped trying to move. It’s not like her body could do anything anyway. The cold had seeped into her joints and muscles - every fiber of her being. She waited to see if the voice would say anything else, but it didn’t. Her eyes had at least half adjusted to the darkness and let her see the outline of massively thick scales coiled around her. They were definitely the source of the cold she felt – rippling from it in steady waves and making it oh so difficult to move. With a shaky breath, Lightfoot got the scent of a blizzard – the crispness of the air that pulled the warmth from your very bones. Lightfoot had started to drift back to sleep when the voice started singing. There were no words - a sense of calm and peace rolled over her as the darkness took hold once more. ______________ Trying to find the elk herd proved more challenging than Luckystone expected. He’d flown back in the direction where he’d last seen the herd, but they were long gone. His eyes scanned the forest below him for any sign of their passing, flying in wider and wider circles as he searched. Luckystone grew more concerned as hours passed with no sign of Lightfoot, the elk, or the monster Swiftrunner spoke of. His search had led him to the forest’s edge higher up the mountain. With a heavy heart, Luckystone carefully landed at the top of the tallest pine in the area for a much needed rest. His wings ached from all the flying and the adrenaline that had gotten him through much of the day’s stressful events was fading fast. He slumped against the tree in exhaustion and closed his eyes. The thrum of distant magic slowly gained Luckystone’s attention. He forced himself to wake up and focus. A song began to form at the edge of his senses - soothing, beckoning - a gentle caress on the wind. Luckystone felt his aches fade away as he jumped away from the tree, wings beating with renewed energy. He muttered a quick prayer of thanks to the Icewarden. Whatever was out there had given him the strength to go on. The song called out to him, guiding him further up the mountain and away from the forest to the entrance of a cave. Massive spikes of ice encircled the area around it, forming an impressive barrier that blocked anything without wings from gaining entry. Magic radiated from them - the song reverberated throughout his body as he landed, the thick mist covering the ground parted from the wind his wings created to reveal a carpet of bones. The mist quickly filled the void once Luckystone folded his wings against his body. The sight of so many bones should have alarmed him, but with the song so loud Luckystone could only feel peace even as he shivered from the sharp drop in temperature. He climbed atop a large skull laying near the entrance of the cave to get a better look into its darkness, barely noticing the shape of it resembled a Wildclaw. Something much, much larger than him moved within the darkness, causing the mist to swirl around the entrance of the cave. The ground rumbled lightly beneath his feet as it approached. It towered above him from a monstrous height and the closer it came the colder everything got. Shaggy pale blue fur followed its spine from head to tail, with thick dark blue scales forming ice-like plates of armor everywhere else. What looked like broken ice above a river - wings - were so thin the light from the sun passed through them and formed fractured rainbows in the mist. Antlers formed an impressive crown atop its head and white eyes stared down at him. The song came to an abrupt end as a voice forced its way into his head. ‘Trespasser.’ ___________________________________________________________ ......New friend? @Pyrouge @Frostwyvern @Vicegrips @Avalonian ___________________________________________________________ Thread Info | Table of Contents | Location | Clan Members | Culture | Gallery | Other

Whoever – whatever – this was, he would have to act carefully. Fae’s didn’t have it easy in the world, even with their stronger ties to all things magic. One swipe from this being’s claws or a bite – he’d be done for. Luckystone hid his shivering by using the motion to dip his head in respect. All the stories he’d grown up hearing about Gaolers had suddenly come to life – and it was rather terrifying if he was to be honest. Although he didn’t remember the whiskers… “I apologize, Great One. I was–” Luckystone’s apology was interrupted by either a laugh or a growl. It was difficult to tell which so he shut his mouth. ‘Words often spoken without meaning.’ The Gaoler brought their head down to his level, their pale eyes staring straight into him. Testing him. Luckystone gripped the skull he still perched on and lifted his face to return their gaze. Oh Icewarden, one of their eyes was bigger than his body… “I mean what I say. I’m sorry for crossing into your territory, I was only searching for someone very dear to me because I’m worried they’re hurt.” The Gaoler blinked slowly before raising their head back to its normal height. ‘You did so regardless, just like those other fools.’ Luckystone’s head fins and wings flared in anger and desperation, “What do you m–” The Fae frantically scrambled backwards to escape the snapping jaws aimed where he had been standing a moment before. He hadn’t meant for things to escalate. With its head still low to the ground, the Gaoler growled at him. They made no move to attack again, but Luckystone found himself weighed down by the heavy frost accumulating on his body. The surrounding air had chilled significantly as the Gaoler fully emerged from the cave. The sheer size of them made Luckystone feel like one of the insects he loved to eat… absolutely miniscule in comparison. And even though Luckystone had been born in the Icefields, the cold here still made it past his thick hide. If he stayed still much longer he’d likely freeze. Luckystone watched for his chance to gain a little distance between them. ‘My claim was made and they brazenly ignored it!’ Sadness tinged their angry growls for a moment and then it was gone, ‘There was no need to attack Morningfrost or the others!’ The Gaoler’s giant paw reached for him and Luckystone managed to leap out its path just in time, the mist swirling around them both. His chest heaved with exertion and Luckystone’s thoughts whirled as he went over what Swiftrunner had told him. The elk hunt gone terribly wrong. A monster that showed up out of nowhere and left thick frost and ice behind. This had to be the monster that Swiftrunner warned him about, but… why would a monster care for and name an animal? That didn’t make any sense. And then there were the tales of Gaolers… They were supposed to be massive with thick fur – but this one also had scales and whiskers. His next train of thought was broken as Luckystone evaded another swipe, this time slower than before. The cold was catching up with him. Luckystone righted himself and turned to face the not-Gaoler, finally releasing his own magic with an explosive burst to clear the frost from his body, the remnants crackling as it combined with the surroundings. The not-Gaoler paused their attack, slowly lowering a paw to the ground. Their stare was different than before. Luckystone spoke while he still had the chance, “I am deeply sorry for what happened. I don’t want to fight you – I know I’m not strong enough for that to be any good. If you’ll let me, I will do my best to heal your friend. If you know where Lightfoot is we’ll both leave and no one will ever bother the elk roaming the forest. I swear by the Icewarden – my clan will guard the forest to make sure nothing like this happens again.” A different kind of chill rippled through the air when he finished talking, something that made Luckystone believe the Icewarden had heard him. The not-Gaoler seemed to have noticed it too, as their body language relaxed. ‘Come.’ ___________________________________________________________ Time for a risky friendship-no-jutsu / plea to the gods. @Pyrouge @Frostwyvern @Vicegrips @Avalonian ___________________________________________________________ Thread Info | Table of Contents | Location | Clan Members | Culture | Gallery | Other

As the song’s magic ended, Luckystone was able to understand the dangerous situation he had gotten himself into. Although he didn’t remember the whiskers…

“I apologize, Great One. I was–” Luckystone’s apology was interrupted by either a laugh or a growl. It was difficult to tell which so he shut his mouth.

Words often spoken without meaning.’ The Gaoler brought their head down to his level, their pale eyes staring straight into him. Testing him.

Luckystone gripped the skull he still perched on and lifted his face to return their gaze. Oh Icewarden, one of their eyes was bigger than his body… “I mean what I say. I’m sorry for crossing into your territory, I was only searching for someone very dear to me because I’m worried they’re hurt.”

The Gaoler blinked slowly before raising their head back to its normal height.

You did so regardless, just like those other fools.’

Luckystone’s head fins and wings flared in anger and desperation, “What do you m–” The Fae frantically scrambled backwards to escape the snapping jaws aimed where he had been standing a moment before.

Come.’

He had certainly heard the small one’s promise. To go against that– “So, um… what can I call you?” The small one had decided to fly near Spiritsong’s head, though still a safe distance away from any snapping jaws. “I’m Luckystone.” ‘Spiritsong is my name,’ they replied, as the pair reached the opening to the cave. The small one – Luckystone – hovered with his indecision to enter. Spiritsong looked his way, unsure of how to reassure him that they wouldn’t bite. ‘It is a small cave, you will be fine.’ Spiritsong continued into the cave, their steps the only sounds that quietly echoed against the walls. Luckystone’s voice broke the silence once more, “Are you one of the Great Ones from Before? The…,” he hesitated, almost not daring to finish the sentence, “you know - Gaolers.” Spiritsong shook their head, ‘No, I am not one of them. I am… not sure what I would be. Something not from here, but yet born in ice.’ Luckystone flew a little closer, looking elated that they weren’t one of the Gaolers, “Then you’re like me! And well, Lightfoot and Swiftrunner too! Our ancestors were born to different gods, but they traveled here to find new homes. Mine was the Arcanist - which I’ve gotten flak about - and I’m a Fae. Lightfoot–” Spiritsong decided to tune out his long winded chatterings, the Fae didn’t seem to notice. Thankfully there wasn’t much more space to the cave and reached the back just as Luckystone started ranting about how difficult it was to make friends with Tundras. The ground sloped downward here to form a shallow - for Spiritsong - pit in which the elk and Lightfoot lay. Luckystone darted to her side the moment he saw her, his little paws cradling her face. Lightfoot’s eyes opened briefly at his touch. The Mirror was still chilled from her earlier exposure to the cold and she was still fairly out of it. Her mate called up his magic to try and undo the damage caused by the deep layers of frost and ice, half going into a trance as he worked. Spiritsong watched with interest. They hadn’t seen ice magic used this way before. All of their interactions with other ice dragons - essentially Tundras - used their abilities to either build or battle with their element. And yet, here was this new, very small iceborn using his magic to help someone. The Fae’s magic didn’t last very long, though. He had already used some to help Swiftrunner, and the boost provided by Spiritsong’s magic was not enough to restore the rest of Luckystone’s magic. Spiritsong gracefully stepped into the pit for someone of their size when his magic fizzled to a stop. “Could you heal her the rest of the way? I did what I could, but… I’m not a healer,” Luckystone turned his head to look up at them, his head fins drooped with exhaustion. Spiritsong shook their head, ‘It is not so easy.’ The little Fae looked up at them in confusion. Spiritsong sat down and used one paw to gesture between Lightfoot and the elk, ‘I can transfer the vitality of a soul only. One would die… painfully. If you and yours intend to honor your oath, I cannot use my magic.’ “But if Lightfoot can be healed–” Spiritsong shook their head, growling with enough force to show fangs when Luckystone tried to interrupt. When he was quiet they continued, ‘Life calls for life, there must be balance. Be thankful I do not enforce it further. Your mate must pay for her trespass, but she will live because Morningfrost still breathes.’ The corners of Luckystone’s eyes welled up with tears, but he didn’t argue further. ‘I will allow you to remain here as they recover,’ Spiritsong got up to leave, one paw on the edge of the shallow pit as they paused, ‘Do not strain my hospitality.’ With that, Spiritsong left the cave, leaving it noticeably warmer after they were gone. Luckystone found a comfortable place in the crook of Lightfoot’s neck and lay down. He would not leave her now. Spiritsong did not wait for the small one to follow - the magic in the air had sharpened after he had made his oath to the Icewarden, a god Spiritsong had never seen but always felt was intertwined with their life. He had certainly heard the small one’s promise. To go against that–

“So, um… what can I call you?” The small one had decided to fly near Spiritsong’s head, though still a safe distance away from any snapping jaws. “I’m Luckystone.”

Spiritsong is my name,’ they replied, as the pair reached the opening to the cave.

The small one – Luckystone – hovered with his indecision to enter. Spiritsong looked his way, unsure of how to reassure him that they wouldn’t bite.

It is a small cave, you will be fine.’ Spiritsong continued into the cave, their steps the only sounds that quietly echoed against the walls.

Luckystone’s voice broke the silence once more, “Are you one of the Great Ones from Before? The…,” he hesitated, almost not daring to finish the sentence, “you know - Gaolers.”

Spiritsong shook their head, ‘No, I am not one of them. I am… not sure what I would be. Something not from here, but yet born in ice.’

Luckystone flew a little closer, looking elated that they weren’t one of the Gaolers, “Then you’re like me! And well, Lightfoot and Swiftrunner too! Our ancestors were born to different gods, but they traveled here to find new homes. Mine was the Arcanist - which I’ve gotten flak about - and I’m a Fae. Lightfoot–”

Spiritsong decided to tune out his long winded chatterings, the Fae didn’t seem to notice.

Spiritsong gracefully stepped into the pit for someone of their size when his magic fizzled to a stop.

“Could you heal her the rest of the way? I did what I could, but… I’m not a healer,” Luckystone turned his head to look up at them, his head fins drooped with exhaustion.

Spiritsong shook their head, ‘It is not so easy.’

The little Fae looked up at them in confusion. Spiritsong sat down and used one paw to gesture between Lightfoot and the elk, ‘I can transfer the vitality of a soul only. One would die… painfully. If you and yours intend to honor your oath, I cannot use my magic.’

“But if Lightfoot can be healed–”

Spiritsong shook their head, growling with enough force to show fangs when Luckystone tried to interrupt. When he was quiet they continued, ‘Life calls for life, there must be balance. Be thankful I do not enforce it further. Your mate must pay for her trespass, but she will live because Morningfrost still breathes.’

I will allow you to remain here as they recover,’ Spiritsong got up to leave, one paw on the edge of the shallow pit as they paused, ‘Do not strain my hospitality.’

With that, Spiritsong left the cave, leaving it noticeably warmer after they were gone.

Aww... I love how much Luckystone cares for Lightfoot. I hope they turn out ok- but Spiritsong is a very intriguing character as well, and I can't wait to see where this goes!

With Luckystone at her side again I'm sure she will be. Though, I doubt Lightfoot and Swiftrunner will be very pleased with his agreement with Spiritsong... >_>

Mini-update: I ended up posting the intro and combined 1-5 parts of New Beginnings on my DeviantArt. I'll continue to post first here though!
