Velya makes sense. Also, power could be for lightning's reactor too, they seem to be building something big.

or maybe even the Earth ancient? as he was going into the earth to see what was going on? were they corrupted and are now the reason why dragons are vanishing? as that was a problem that wasn't solved.

Yup.
I'm making an exception to policy and confirming this, as this was a paragraph splice/edit fail on my part. My apologies for any confusion!

Honestly? That would be so cool. Corrupted earth ancient, maybe one that got enchanted by something malicious? I mean there's Earthshaker post in Voices, strange crystal from shrine, and creatures from Excavation Chamber Four. Maybe it's all linked.

so with this confirmation, what if it's not the Shade earthshaker was referring to? what if it was whatever's been taking dragons like Fetter? that would make loads more sense, especially since they seem to be skeletal and possibly undead. Returned would seem to be a fitting title for such creatures!

Also the thing is that mostly dragons that went underground disappeared. Shade would have to live in Earthdad's basement rent free, I don't think he wouldn't recognize it sooner, and yet he went to investigate himself who's messing around on his lawn.

Fair point that Earthshaker would recognize the Shade sooner. But what threat could be big enough that they would drag it out this long, if not the Shade?
Would they really make a corrupted ancient as someone has suggested (even if they get un-corrupted)?
Would they make a beastclan this powerful? Doubtful.
Would they go the direction of something undead? But the World Map already introduced "skeletal wyrms" without much fanfare, as if undead are no big deal (Luminax excepted). Not to mention Ghostlight Ruins.
Nothing is a deity-level threat except the Shade and Luminax (and Luminax is the result of something a deity did).
Not trying to be overly forceful here, it's just pixel dragons and I'm just trying to think it through.

It would only make sense for The Returned to be either non-Emperor zombies or the Shade. Or zombies given un-life by the Shade. "The Returned" definitely sounds like one of those "we're not going to say the Z-word" terms, heh.
It is said in lore that remnants of the Shade rained upon the world and seeped into the earth, seemingly gone. But we know from the Coliseum that the beasts our dragons fight are Shade-touched, and from Gaoler lore that Modern dragons are also shade-touched. Many of whom, over the ages, are now dead and buried remnants in the earth.
Perhaps the remnants of the Shade seeped into the earth and pooled in the core of the planet, with the Shade slowly collecting itself over generations of dragons, far beyond the notice of the likes of the Tidelord (deep-sea trenches), Earthshaker (non-molten earth), and Flamecaller (molten earth). And now it's strong enough to infect the remains and bones of dragons and beastclan long since dead.
Tidelord is still missing but active, and Earthshaker was spooked enough to move from his calcified state and create new dragons meant to Protect. There be a mystery afoot still, and it all seems connected.

Agreed. As much as I want the threat to be terrifying leviathan water ancients, ultimately they would still just be dragons...not something that should spook a deity so badly. The Shade, though, is the Big Bad that I could see potentially getting Earthdad up and moving and Waterdad down searching the oceans [s]or whatever he’s doing[/s] for years.

And it's been said too that we should be keeping an eye on The Source; Lightning's reactor.

Honestly lightning's reactor is lowkey terrifying, I mean it seems awfully similar to the one that caused that first apocalypse and created the Arcanist
But yeah anyway I feel like this mysterious new threat is shade-related, I can't think of other things that fit into the lore and would scare a deity so badly, unless it's something entirely new
