Yeah, very much this. Nobody gets significant gems by being on daily. Don't think of things as 'treasure' and 'gems' exclusively, think of things as just money and remember you can convert between the two.
Spending some time in the coli and then taking the time to sell the valuable things on the AH for gems is a really solid mainstay - you can sell stacks of food for gems regularly. It gets even better if you farm things that are used for popular gene recipes and sell those on the AH instead of hoardselling. I made a [I]ton[/I] of money today by selling Preserved Petals - I'd been saving them ever since Blossom was released because I suspected the counterpart item to Dried Lilium Petals would be used if another ancient breed got Blossom, and in one way or another I was right.
If you can only pop in occasionally, melt materials whenever you can check your phone and then sell them. Use all your gathering turns on scavenging and occasionally you'll net an egg for a tidy 300+ gems.
There are tons of ways to make money on this site without ever putting a single cent of real world currency in.

You play glimmer and gloom and get 75,000t per day. You either trade that treasure to other players for gems, or you go to the auction house and purchase the item you want for treasure instead of gems. Currency is fluid.

All the fairgrounds give is treasure never gems so grimmer and gloom are useless to get gems
