She stared down at day four’s ingredients dismally. There was no way either of them were actually going to taste this dish- only Plague dragons ate contaminated food like diseased fungus, in her clan. And not even then! She didn't think they even had any plant-eating Plague dragons. Dia poked the incorporeal dinner with her chef’s knife. Was it already cooked? Could she even cut it up? She sighed, before trying. It was a strange and unpleasant task, but somehow she managed to separate the… breastmeat? from the weird thing, and sliced pockets into the cuts. The diseased fungus she handled with extreme care, chopping them and putting them in to sautee with some butter along with some wild onions and ground plague bat meat. In for a copper, in for a gold and all that. She turned her attention to the soylent blue. Finding a mortar and pestle, she ground it to a rough powder. Ugh, it was dry. Dia added the meat of several devilsnaps, and some melted butter, and mashed it all up into a thick, purplish paste. Well, that would do, she supposed. Dia turned back to her pieces of incorporeal dinner, and stuffed them full of the mushroom mixture. She supposed it was a good thing that the darned meat hadn't just wisped away into nothingness. Next she patted the soylent clam paste into a shell around the pieces, and popped it all in the oven until the crust had, well, not browned, but darkened pleasantly? Dia pulled her dubious dish out of the oven, cutting it in half, positioning it artistically, and drizzling it with oyster sauce on a plate. Truth be told, she'd only cut it to ensure that her incorporeal meat was still there, and that the soylent blue hadn't made the shell hard as rocks. Dia sighed dismally once more, covering her dish with a dome to ensure no mishaps happened, and waited quietly for the judge to wander around.

"Hmm... ghost turkey, plague mushrooms, and fake seafood. What on earth...? Well, it's what I have. Why don't I..." She quickly broke down the incorporeal dinner, glazed it with blue honey from blue honeycomb, and stuck it in the oven, knowing it would take the longest to cook. She then quickly diced the diseased mushrooms, along with glow mushrooms, cabbage butterflys, carnaval tulips, and a few fire ants for heat, and sauted them. Finally, she sliced the soylent blue, along with several butterfly fish, and began to fry them, making a dipping sauce from some mustache moths, wastleland paupers, and a bit of watermelon juice. "Well, it's not the prettiest plate, but it tastes darn good!"

ButtsPie's spirits fell a little when he saw it in the ingredients list. And diseased fungi? How could those be safe to eat? He'd probably have to cook them somehow if he wanted to get the bad stuff off them. He sighed. He wasn't really a proper cook, but he couldn't think of a way to bake something out of these odd ingredients. [item=incorporeal dinner][item=diseased fungus][item=soylent blue][item=spinach][item=wild onion][item=yellow-frilled eel] He supposed he could try his claw a a stir-fry of some kind. There was already a seafood item in the required ingredients, so instead of noodles he decided to try using eels. They at least looked like noodles, right? He gutted his eels and set them in a pot to boil. The diseased fungi would have to be cooked separately, he thought, to minimize any risk of contamination. He removed the caps from the stalks and kept both components in a pile off to the side. Next he stripped meat from the ghost turkey, cut the soylent into little rectangular bits, and chopped up some spinach and onion. Cutting the onion didn't bother him so much, he just had to remember not to touch his face until he washed his claws. The caps and stalks went into their own pan to fry while everything else was lumped together in another pan. He worked two-handed to make sure everything was cooking evenly. There was no way he was going to try tossing the contents of these pans the way he'd seen other dragons do, so he just stirred his ingredients around with a spatula. When everything looked cooked to his satisfaction he quickly turned off the heat, took the pans off, and then took his eels off the stove to strain. He poked at the noodly mess in worry. The eels seemed a little squishy. Maybe he'd left them on the stove too long. He didn't really have time to do it over though. The steaming eels went into a large bowl. On top of that went the soylent bits, shredded turkey, onions, spinach, and mushroom stalks. ButtsPie tried to arrange the mushroom caps on top in what he thought could be a visually pleasing pattern. As a last effort he sprinkled some pepper over the whole thing. He was...nervous. This was out of his comfort zone. Hopefully the judges wouldn't find it too bad. (he is struggling my dudes)

Windrith hummed happily to himself. His first two contestants had done WindSky proud, despite the Weyr’s late start, and after consulting with Gwentoth for hints, he knew just the dragon for today. The dragon in question, however, wasn’t so eager. Mycalvinth was driven, he hated to fall short at anything, and cooking was not an activity he had pursued in depth, given Amharath’s regular meals and the other dining options so easily had here. “How about taking an advisor?” Windrith encouraged. “You could bring an experienced helper to coach you!” And so it was that [url=http://flightrising.com/main.php?p=lair&id=242017&tab=dragon&did=26298078]Pestilenth[/url] found herself at the fairgrounds again, despite the trouble she had caused last year. She promised she wouldn’t handle any of the food, but would be available should Mycalvinth have any questions. *** “Uh-oh, she’s here!” Pestilenth pointed Bloodstone out to Mycalvinth. “That judge. She probably won’t remember me but I’m going to stay out of sight” She swung a Cloak of Invisibility around herself, covering the Noxious Colony still growing on her shoulder. She figured she could remain inconspicuous like that, and still help Mycalvinth. Mycalvinth was wishing he’d brought his mate. Rudath would have been much more congenial company, and she cooked often enough herself she could have given him advice - and maybe buttered up that grumpy looking Coatl with some friendly conversation in their native tongue. He set to work. Hmm, Soylent Blue was not the tastiest ingredient, but it was pretty versatile. He thought back to some tasty pies he’d eaten recently at Camelliath’s Sinensis Tea House, rich with savory flavors… Something like those would be good! He crumbled the Soylent Blue into a bowl. Then he shelled some Wetland Ghosts, and crunched the husks to a fine meal, adding them to the bowl along with some ground Amaranth, and blending the dry ingredients well. He moistened the mixture with the jelly from some Electric Stingers (having discarded the stinging parts) and a drizzle of Fish Oil, to tenderize it and bring out the seafood flavor. Then he gathered it into a ball, and deftly rolled it out into a large circle. He’d picked out the biggest pie pan he could find, and slipped his dough into place. “Huh, you look like you know what you’re doing,” came Pestilenth’s voice from the air to one side. “Of course!” he responded in her general direction, and went to slip his crust into an available oven to par-bake. The filling would be easier. He sauteed the Diseased Mushrooms enough to shrink them down so he could add more to the pan. He loved their zesty flavor! A splash of cooking wine, and some fresh Spinach, a pinch of Salt, and by then the crust was ready. He spooned the vegetables into it when both had cooled slightly. He didn’t want his crust to get soggy! Meanwhile, he beat together the Incorporeal Dinner with some eggs, to make a light custard, and poured it over the filling ingredients. While it baked, he thought he’d ask Pestilenth for advice on presentation. He thought she’d fallen asleep, but she did not respond to his calls. He felt around where he’d last heard her, but found no fluff. “What are you doing?” he suddenly heard behind him. “What are YOU doing!” he hissed, “Did you just LEAVE?!” “I got bored. So I went to see what your competitors were doing! I looked at some pretty interesting stuff, let me tell you….” “You were supposed to stay away from the food!” “Oh don’t worry, nobody saw me. And I was just checking to see what you were up against!” Mycalvinth groaned. And yet, more than anything, Chess wanted to impress her. So, what could he do with these...unusual... ingredients. The preservation theme was interesting. Maybe rehydrating some jerky? Hmm, that was a possibility. But what about a twist on a classic? Something that could showcase technique while also going out on a limb.

Entry: Mussels Rockedragon

Required Ingredients: Incorporeal Dinner Diseased Fungus Soylent Blue

Additional Ingredients: Scarlet Mussels Spinach Wild Onion

Typically this classic variation of this dish was served as oysters on the half shell. Chess decided to adapt it to mussels but keeping the half shell concept. He'd steam them open, but instead of using regular water for the steam, would use a broth made from the incorporeal dinner.

The diseased fungus got popped in the freezer to harden, while the soylent blue melted on the stovetop. Chess roasted the incorporeal dinner skin to crisp it and then crushed it into tiny pieces.

He tore apart, then sauteed spinach with chopped wild onions in the soylent blue butter sauce he had made.

Chess spooned a bit of the spinach mixture over the steamed mussels on the half shell, then grated the hardened diseased fungus over the mussels. As a final touch, he sprinkled some of the incorporeal dinner skin over the dish, which would give it a light and crispy insubstantial texture. He broiled the mussels just enough to make the sauce bubbly again and lightly brown the top.

Chess tasted one and sprinkled just a tiny bit of salt onto it. He carefully arranged the shells on a white plate, wiping the edges to make sure it looked perfect for the judge. Now, all he had to do was wait.

Let’s throw it all in a pot—pie.” “A pot pie?” “Err, sure, why not?” -------- Seraphin braised the Incorporeal Dinner in a stew of onions, herbs, and well, actual turkey broth. [item=Wild Onion][item=Turkey Dinner] If you couldn’t have the real thing…ghost turkey saturated in real turkey juices would do. (Right?) Indie Sliced the diseased fungi into thin strips, sautéing them with butter and some spices. [item=Diseased Fungus][item=Blacktongue pepper] When Seraphin wasn’t looking, she threw in quite a bit of chopped Blacktongue pepper too. Indie and Seraphin both found themselves staring at the Soylent Blue. [item=Soylent Blue] It stared back. “So uh—” Indie started. “Don’t finish that thought,” threatened Seraphin. Seraphin picked up the brick of soylent blue and started demolishing and smashing it into tiny pieces. Indie watched her, impressed. “Remind me to stay on your annoyed side, and not your irrationally angry one.” “Start on the dough, and maybe you can get on my elusive good side.” Seraphin grinned. Menacingly. “Okay, okay, okay, okay,” Indie mocked, before starting on making the dough for the crust. They kneaded the miniscule pieces of soylent blue into the mixture and hoped for the best. They made the crust, poured in the meat, and mushrooms, and put some crust on top, then set the whole thing to bake. When it came out… “It looks—edible.” It came out as more of a question. “Looks can be deceiving,” Indie stated, simply. “At least [i]we[/i] don’t have to eat it.”

“Err, is this a joke?” Seraphin regarded the ingredients, and then the very serious expression on Gourmet’s face.

Indie took one glance at the ingredients, then sighed. “We’re doomed.”

Drawn back to reality, Seraphin punched Indie in the arm. “Hey, uh, we’ll think of something.” She poked at the Soylent Blue, and it didn’t even budge. “Err, possibly.”
“Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay.” Seraphin was frantically flipping through her cookbook.
“If you say okay again, I’m going to serve incorporeal dinner, diseased fungus, and soylent blue stuffed Seraphin.”
Seraphin continued on oblivious. “Okay, okay, got it! Let’s throw it all in a pot—pie.”
“A pot pie?”
“Err, sure, why not?”
Seraphin braised the Incorporeal Dinner in a stew of onions, herbs, and well, actual turkey broth.
Wild Onion Turkey Dinner
If you couldn’t have the real thing…ghost turkey saturated in real turkey juices would do. (Right?)

Indie Sliced the diseased fungi into thin strips, sautéing them with butter and some spices.
Diseased Fungus Blacktongue Pepper
When Seraphin wasn’t looking, she threw in quite a bit of chopped Blacktongue pepper too.

Indie and Seraphin both found themselves staring at the Soylent Blue.
Soylent Blue
It stared back.
“So uh—” Indie started.
“Don’t finish that thought,” threatened Seraphin.

Seraphin picked up the brick of soylent blue and started demolishing and smashing it into tiny pieces.

Topaz waved at the other contestants from previous days, following at a more sedate pace. At a few curious looks, she explained. "Prim caught a 24-hour bug, you know how it is with hatchlings. Lemme tell you, she sulked all day yesterday because she had to stay home with Shirai!" Her cheer trailed off as she saw the ingredients for today's challenge. Prim was staring at them, looking more than a little perplexed herself. What is she supposed to do with an incorporeal dinner, soylent blue, and diseased fungus? "Fake fish, fake fish.....what to do with fake fish....." Prim mumbled. Suddenly, her eyes lit up and she dashed to the pantry, calling for Topaz to follow. __________ There were two distinct areas set up at the cooking station now. Topaz had several sheets of dried Giant kelp, a pot of rice cooking on the stovetop, and was busily slicing carrots, avocado, cucumber, and the soylent blue into thin strips next to an odd bamboo mat. Prim had made a batter out of flour, cockatrice eggs, and water, and was browning some shredded incorporeal dinner in a pan lightly coated in macadamia oil. The diseased fungus sat nearby, waiting to be peeled and chopped along next to a head of cabbage, ginger, and a clove of garlic While Topaz waited for the rice to cook, she and Prim grated the carrot and the ginger, shredded the cabbage, sliced the fungus, and carefully crushed the garlic. The fungus, garlic, and ginger was tossed into the pan with the shredded incorporeal dinner and browned, and after it cooled was poured into the batter along with the carrots and cabbage. The rice was ready now, and Topaz was confident that Prim could handle flipping a few pancakes herself. Heading back to her part of the workstation, Topaz laid out a sheet of dried kelp on the bamboo mat and spread the rice over it. She laid the sliced ingredients in the middle of the rice, and carefully began to roll it up. The final roll was a little lumpy, but after it was sliced it looked just fine! Topaz carried her soylent blue avocado rolls over to prim, who was carefully plating a stack of golden-brown fried cakes topped with toasted sesame seeds, a drizzle of sweet soy sauce, and green onions. There was enough room on the tray to arrange the sushi in a neat rectangle and drizzle it with a mixture of soy sauce and wasabi. "Looks like you're right back in the swing of things, huh." Prim puffed up her cheeks. "I was never out! I bet I wasn't even contagious!" "Better safe than sorry, kiddo. Now, I think those cakes of yours should get judged while they're hot." _____ Recipe referenced for the pancakes:[url]https://www.sbs.com.au/food/recipes/japanese-pancake-chicken-and-mushroom[/url] Was too busy yesterday to write an entry, so poor Prim had to catch a stomach bug. :(
