ok so, i recently got a level 10 to make levelling easier in the second area of the coli, but since adding him to my team, i get exp every maybe 1 out of 5 battles? i feel like this isn't a glitch, but i'm just confused.

If your dragons are a higher level than the venue you're battling in, you'll get less exp per battle, and past a certain level difference you won't get any exp at all.

even if its just a single dragon in your party?

Yeah, I believe that exp gain is determined by the highest level dragon in your party. If you're in a venue more than five levels below the dragon with the highest level, you won't get exp. That might be why you're getting exp some of the time - there are level 5 and 6 enemies in the second area, so you should get exp from them, but you won't get exp from level 4 enemies (I think if you equip [item=field manual], you can see the level of the enemy). I might suggest getting a dragon with a lower level than 10 - your exp gain should increase if your highest-level dragon more closely matches the level of the venue you're in.

I had this same question last week. Exp gain is based on the highest level dragon on your team. As long as your strongest dragon is within 5 levels up or down from the venue, you'll gain exp. More than 5 levels above the venue, you won't gain exp.
