Hi so...
I have recently become absolutely OBSESSED with Hadestown the musical. I can't believe I didn't pay it more mind when it first came out and swept the Tonys (DESERVED).
In my opinion, the show itself is a work of SHEER GENIOUS.
It's such an amazing re-interpretation of the mythology that gives the women more liberty over their fates and sets everything in a dystopian landscape that is just so cool. Beyond that, the meta elements of the show and the explanation of why it repeats every night are just INCREDIBLE.
Every single role in the show is just fleshed out so well, and not a single character is unlikable for the way that they have been played. In the OBC, the actor's voices are INSANE. They are incredible actors and singers with such sheer power.
Also the fates and their three-part harmonies are gorgeous.
As a poet and aspiring playwright myself, the lyrics are insanely deep, with such cool ties to greek mythology as a whole and are just wrought full with secondary meanings. I especially loved seeing the progression of Epic, as Orpheus learned more about the world the way that it is, and learned about the true power of love and hope. Epic III is in my opinion, a work of sheer genius. I can see why the king of hades would be moved by this song, and it is just incredible.
Honestly, my favorite song of all is Wait for Me reprise. Wait for me is in itself a phenomenal song, but the reprise, with all the harmonies, the role of the workers and fate, and the sheer vocal talent, is nothing short of a masterpiece, and I love to see how all of the characters have developed over the course of the show.
Has anyone else on here listened to or seen the show? If so, what were your thoughts? Also, I recommend the show to anyone, especially fellow theater kids.

Since I knew it ‘before it was cool’ I was able to get cheap tickets to see back in 2019? I think it was that long ago which is crazy
Took my best friend to see it with me, and it was such a fun time, I absolutely adore Amber Gray so much
Wish the OBC Orpheus was as good as the live recording Orpheus but he was still extremely good
Me and my bud absolutely adored every second of it and it was such an incredible show
The set was stunning, the actors, the singing, just everything was so good
Didn’t think I’d ever get a chance to see it because it was such an obscure show but now everybody knows about it and that’s just so hecking brilliant
The live recording is my favorite recording but I think that’s just because it’s what I’m used to

I haven't actually seen it in theatres, but I do own the 2010 concept album which I got about 2014-2015 maybe when I saw Anais Mitchell at one of those casual-type individual concerts.

I saw the touring cast yesterday!! It's so good!! They don't have the trapdoor that slowly sinks down in the middle of the stage so they have these double doors that open top-and-bottom instead of left-and-right as the door to Hadestown.

I am so sad about not seeing it myself. I discovered it the spring before they announced it for Broadway, about May 2018. And I was geared for it in 2019, wanting to go and get tickets and see it, but then some things happened moneywise, and then it just never happened, and then the Pandemic and uggggh. I still want to try and see it but life is meh right now. Anyways the songs are soooo good. I have listened to both the original concept album and the off-broadway one and enjoy them a ton.

OdiAibyouka I hope you get to see it soon!
I haven't been able to see it yet, but I've listened to the songs so many times! One of my favorite things about it is the ambiguity of setting- Hades is a factory owner with indentured servants and simultaneously the god of the underworld, ruling over the dead. The two are entwined with each other, the magic and the mortal, and it really gets to the heart of what mythology is- stories that say something about people, not a specific setting. And the music is so good! I love the motifs, both melodic and lyrical, that pop up throughout it, and how they add to the sense of inevitability. The fact that one of Hermes' recurring lines is "Say it again"! This has happened before, it will happen again, but we keep doing it because there's a chance that this time it will work, that Hades and Persephone will rebuild their relationship, that Orpheus and Eurydice will make it through this time. And even if it doesn't work out this time, it doesn't mean that the trying was in vain.
"It's a sad song, it's an sad tale, it's a tragedy
It's a sad song, but we sing it anyways."
Just, the way that you almost don't notice those lines in the opening! The music is so lively and energetic that you're just excited, and then when they come back in the reprise it's a punch in the throat!
Emotionally charged reprises are the easiest way to get to me, and this show is so full of them.
