TOPIC | PokemonGo after 3 years...
So for this holiday I got a new phone. The phone I had previously was an iPhone 5c which I’ve had for years. Unfortunately, that phone began dropping calls and became so outdated I could rarely download new or necessary apps because my phone’s iOS wasn’t recent enough. I got PokemonGo when it first came out in July 2016, and I was able to play for around a year, but I would occasionally delete it from time to time when it drained my battery too harshly. Unfortunately during that process, PokemonGo would get updates that eventually surpassed what my phone could be compatible with, so I could no longer play it for three years. I just downloaded it and hopped on my original Go account, and so much has changed! I never battled anyone before because I prefer to take pictures and hatch eggs, but I did come across a Rocket balloon and I’m so glad the shadow/purified Pokémon gimmick made a comeback from the Orre region!

Similar story here. Was unable to play for several months because the app kept crashing 0.1 seconds after it got past the loading screen on my IPad. Got a phone for Christmas that's much more recent and everything just works. They added some Kalos Pokémon and Mega Evolution while I was gone.

It's still a pretty finicky app even on the best phone, haha! I use it to keep track of my walking/jogging distance every week, and it's pretty accurate. It's kind of difficult to play in a rural area, though. We've got one gym in the neighborhood that takes me half an hour to walk to, and I take it over every evening only for it to get taken back by the same group of players* every night around 9PM. [emoji=veilspun laughing size=1] Now that it connects directly to Pokemon Home I've been using it to shiny hunt more. I managed to get the shiny Celebi in the recent event! *it has been over a year of this and I have still never seen them. I only recognize the usernames, and I know the time of day because I get a notification when my Pokemon has returned to me. I didn't mean for it to sound creepy that I know that. They have lengthened the distance from a gym you can be so you can use it while several buildings away. You can interact with gyms for raids from 2 kilometers away (well over a mile).

Glad to hear you guys enjoy playing it! I’ve never challenged or taken over a gym before, but I’ve seen similar occurrences where it’s one or a group of users dominating a specific area.

So there are shiny Pokémon in the game now? That’s awesome. Though I haven’t bothered with Pokémon Home, I’m glad someone’s getting enjoyment out of it.

I like that the npcs have slightly animated models now, though I did like the 2D artwork they started off with.

@Burger

They added Remote Raid Passes if you haven't noticed it yet. This will let you fight in a raid without being physically near the Pokestop.

It's hard to organize a raid without using Discord, though, because the game itself doesn't let you talk to other players or add them to your friends list (required to invite them to a raid) unless you contact them outside of the app first (and even then they only have a couple of minutes to accept and everyone I know has their profile set to invisible so you can't tell if they're even online).

In general they've made multiple changes that make it easier to play without actually going anywhere, haha. You don't need to physically visit any Pokestops at all if you don't want to, since you can get free items and your buddy Pokemon will bring you gifts after you get your "bond" up to two hearts.

They started adding a daily free gift box to the store, and sometimes give out free passes there too, so check that out!

You can also use Adventure Sync to get credit for walking distance without giving Pokemon Go any access to GPS data by using a smart phone's accelerometer/pedometer instead. I had to do this for a while because the GPS was messing up and kept making the game think I was driving when I wasn't.

Also it thinks I'm walking when I'm in a rocking chair? LOL

@Stellailluma

Yes I’ve noticed I finally have a pass!

I appreciate the GPS to adventure sync change. I’ll admit I’ve never really participated in a raid before, but it seems like a lot of fun.

The rocking chair loophole is quite funny! I have one at home that was won in a raffle, but it’s used to hold blankets and pillows at the moment. Maybe I’ll try it out.

It's been three years since PokemonGo came out? Woah...

I got that game on my phone when I was first told as it was free if I remember right. I played it for maybe four weeks. For me it seems best to play it in a large city with very many people. The most fun I had playing it was while travelling since it was during the summer vacation of that year that I got it and I would find more Pokemon at a rest stop. There's not very many areas where I live to walk other than neighborhoods so I never used the app that much after travelling since most of the time when I walk I don't have my phone with me since it's generally not allowed if outside walking near where I live. I'd rather it would happily just stay in my memory as I did have some good times collecting a few Pokemon on it than to redownload it but I'm glad others are still able to play it.

@BreezingWinds

I'm glad that you, and a lot of other people, got to make a happy memory out of it. :)

I think that the early experience of that first two weeks or so, where everyone was playing it and it had this special novelty to it while having a nostalgia factor at the same time for many people, was a unique event that the game wasn't able to keep going moving forward. I quit playing for years until earlier in 2020, because the game had too many issues and there wasn't much to do after the first month.

The only time I ever spent money on it was the first week. I doubt I'd still be playing if I had to pay a subscription fee or something, or if it was as pay to win as Pokemon Masters is.

I'm glad too, honestly! I try to make a positive experience out of as many things as I possibly can. It was nice to make that summer a bit different and more memorable, especially since it was before the time I got chronic pain. I did look at other geocaching games, but none of them really had as much appeal, so PokemonGo is still very unique to me.

I do agree with you that there certainly wasn't much to do on it (especially if you were one of the users like me that didn't have access to a local gym). I didn't even remember there being the option of paying on the game to access more things though until I went back through my memories of it to check. I would not have been playing it in the first place if it had a subscription fee-if it had a subscription fee in the first place then I tend to avoid those apps altogether and not download them as I don't spend money on apps very often.
