The books that I hated the most have to be 'The Scarlet Letter' and "The Fire Within'
TOPIC | Horrible books you've read?
Hush, Hush was one of the worst books I ever read. It's Twilight with angels. That's it. The plot is just "mysterious hot boy shows up and female MC falls completely head over heels obsessed with them". It was just as bland and aaaargh as a romance novel can get.

for me it was "the 5th Wave" series. The books weren't horrible themselves, but the messiness of the povs are. In the first book it switches Povs to a completely different character, sometimes in first person, sometimes in third. And does. not. tell. you. I was so confused when I first read it. This happens all throughout the second book as well. I heard the chapter povs are labeled in the third, but I ain't reading it.

I'm glad to see Fablehaven here. While I still really enjoy the series, it has a LOT of glaring problems that jump out after rereads. Especially the third book where they just stole a ton of stuff from Native American stories.
Sadly the the sequel series, Dragonwatch, decides to continue the "Teenage girl and unicorn are In Love" subplot and it's super annoying and just as creepy as it originally was, if not WORSE. Also it's a bit of an angst train, and everyone just seems SO MUCH DUMBER. There are demons out there who are WILLING TO HELP YOUR CAUSE. Stop trying to be oh-so-pure and just agree to get the help of the POWERFUL BEINGS. They try to introduce new and compelling characters, but it just all falls flat. There's no tension. The new secondary protagonists are annoying. The main characters are literally being pushed through an endless string of failures. New worldbuilding elements keep being thrown in at random. Am I still going to get the last book? Yes, I want to know what happens. Is it probably going to disappoint me? Absolutely. Will I regret it? Most definitely.
Overall, Fablehaven and Dragonwatch are my horrible addiction. I just keep going back to it despite how awful it is.

ooohhh all of this. fablehaven still holds a very special place in my heart and i do plan on catching up on dragonwatch eventually, but i've read the first series countless times and it definitely has a lot of issues. the racism that i didn't catch as a kid, the generally boring (and kind of messed up, as snallygaster mentioned before) romance, just the flat characters in general... like you could sum up kendra and seth's personalities into just Older Girl and Younger Boy. don't get me wrong those books are hilarious and i will always love the worldbuilding and the writing style but yeah they're just. hm. they're not the greatest!

I almost forgot I posted here but I'm REALLY glad to see I'm not alone on finding issues with the series. I thought it might not fit the topic and I was just ranting about a book most other people thought was fine. Good thing too, I was actually thinking about giving the sequel series a try (my dragon obsession will be the death of me), but by the sound of it it really doesn't get any better.
It's one of those books for me where the terrible execution just overshadows the baller premise. The occasional gold nugget isn't worth reading through the forced humor and dialogue.

I don't remember what it was called, the one time my poor memory comes in handy, but I only got 20 pages in before I gave up. Like I swear every other page was "and she knew, because she was a woman" or "and he knew, because he was a man," and it was completely irrelevant? Like, the story was about a scifi war, why is this here. It was written in such an old style too for being written in the last 20 years. It is now in the donation box, it will be someone else's problem.

I liked the message, but dear goodness, I HATED George. It's about a trans girl (if I remember correctly?) navigating her new feelings, but the way it's written is so simplistic, I felt patronised. Maybe it just wasn't for my age range, I'm not sure, but generally I'd expect a children's book to have some indication on it.

Have any of you read The Art of Being Normal? It was a book written about the trans experience. By a cis woman. She deadnames her protagonist for most of the book. Said protagonist also lacks depth and nuance. Her whole character is "I want to be a girl!" Girl you are a girl but that doesn't mean you have to lean into everything stereotypically feminine, like fashion design and Lady Gaga! The deuteragonist was just as bad. A good portion of his thing was "I'm trans and I picked my name from my horoscope. Also, these dudes won't stop bullying me and there's this cute girl who might reject me because I'm trans." While it wasn't the worst thing in the world, it was still pretty bad. Just because you worked with trans people, that doesn't automatically qualify to tell trans stories. That's for trans people to tell.

There is this one book that was just so inappropriate, toxic, and disgusting. Which I wasn’t expecting from the wholesome story blurb on the back of the cover that I got. I was borderline appalled reading it. Every two sentences more inappropriate and toxic stuff was said. It was such a horrible read, plus I don’t enjoy reading about that kind of stuff, and I just want to burn it.
Plus in other ratings people claimed, “oh this is so realistic!”
No, the way everything was handled, it just seemed like a horrible tv drama that NEVER MAKES SENSE. It had horrible, dreadful, awful, lgbt+ representation and even worse mental health awareness. It was just so bad omg..

"It's Kind of a Funny Story". I read it in high school, and it was truly an awful experience. There was a genderfluid character who was regularly called slurs, every non-white character was a stereotype, the main character was a Mary Sue in the "he distorted the narrative until it was unrealistic and boring to make him look better" sort of way... just truly an awful book. I am endlessly mad that I chose THAT book over "We Are the Ants". I ended up reading that one anyway, and it was (to my memory) not only a much better depiction of mental illness but a much better book in general.

I had some friends pressure me into reading both the Twilight series and the Hunger Games and I’ve never forgiven them for it.
