I wouldn't consider this game I like to be unknown, but it is rather underrated. It's called Dreaming Mary, which is one of those cute horror games that has subtle hints (some more so than others) on the subject of the game. I recommend it for anyone who likes horror games, because this one doesn't use cheap jumpscares, it actually does a great job at making the player feel unsettled because the true scare is something that you see for a few moments. The music in the game is also great, though the only issue people have with the game is that there's nothing too new every time you start a new game. I still recommend it though.

To The Moon and Finding Paradise! There's a third installment coming out at the end of 2020 called Imposter Factory. These games are very emotional and tearjerking though there isn't much in terms of actual gameplay. The stories are beautiful though! Kan Gao, who is the director/composer of the games said "To the Moon was about seeking fantasy from reality, whereas Finding Paradise is about seeking reality from fantasy. Two sides of the same coin."
It's very beautiful and on steam! I highly recommend!

yeah that ^ they are definitely the types of games i'd recommend someone play at least once in their life.
also, dai gyakuten saiban. i won't shut up about it. the story is good, the characters are fun and unique, and the graphics are absolutely stunning for a 3ds game?? theres a pretty good following within the fandom for it but its pretty much completely unknown outside of that. theres a fanmade english patch for the first game and the translation is incredible. the second game is subbed on yt. also, another bonus, you don't even have to finish the mainline ace attorney/gyakuten saiban to play. [s]please play dgs[/s]
a few more i like to recommend: zero escape, ai: the somnium files, night call. and ghost trick! the first three can get pretty gorey at times though so beware of that. but the first two are really fun puzzle/visual novel type games, and the last one is a very chill and stylized murder mystery. ghost trick is kind of a puzzle platformer?? but they are all very fun and rather short (with the exception of zero escape) games.

Maybe it's gotten popular/a bit known about now, but Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker. It's one of my favourite 3DS games. Why Record Breaker, and not the original? Because RB comes with voice acting, difficulty selection (the original could get quite unfair at times) and a new arc, which might as well be a second game.
I recommend it to anyone that has an interest in RPGs, tactical moves, interesting characters and surviving a demon/eldritch abomination apocalypse. Bear in mind that it is a dark game, and it can get a bit graphic with deaths (even pixel death is... surprisingly ouch) and due to the difficulty, you might have to use a guide, mostly to avoid certain bad events. It also has a bit of fanservice, but I think it can be overlooked.
I'd describe it as Fire Emblem but with demons and permadeath is only a thing if you don't save certain characters.

Growing up I loved the Drawn to Life games. Awesome music, fun mechanic, and a surprisingly deep plotline. I still think about the ending a lot, 10 years later.

I've seen dreaming mary! The art is lovely!! ^^

Shadow Hearts is fairly unknown. I've maybe met like 5 people online who've known of it. It's super good too, at least the first two are AWESOME, the third is just kinda...eh. But the battle mechanic is perfection. I've never seen a game like it before, and there will never be another one. :< And it put in a little history, so you learned a few things while you played it, especially about King Soloman, and all of his stuff. It's wicked cool.

i don't think any of these are necessarily unknown but i don't see people talking about them a lot so i'll list off a few of my favorites!
- hypnospace outlaw (point and click game based on 90's internet)
- hylics (surreal rpg about a moon guy set to experimental music)
- SOMA (atmospheric horror game from the people who made amnesia)
- space funeral (surreal rpg, very very strange)
- rain world (atmospheric survival game, reminds me of hollow knight a bit)
- shelter (unique survival game where you're a badger mother who has to protect, care for and escort her children)
- dwarf fortress (ascii-based roguelike management simulation game, it's a headache visually and hard to learn but very fun nevertheless)
- sayonara wild hearts (idk how to describe this one other than a neon-bright collection of 3d arcade games centered around a superhero girl who rides a motorcycle)
this is a huge mixture of games and i love them dearly!

As a kid I loved the Grandia jrpg series, but I seriously have never heard anyone talking about it. like ever.
I still have nightmares with some of the bosses from the second game haha

Parasite Eve! It's an early Square Enix (back when they were still Squaresoft) sci-fi/horror RPG. One of my favorite games, for sure. It has an incredible soundtrack by Yoko Shimomura, who also does the Kingdom Hearts OSTs.[emoji=familiar heart size=1]
Skies of Arcadia is another relatively unknown one that I adore. Awesome sky pirate RPG with a lot of heart.

@Amura I loved the Shadow Hearts games so much. I'm so sad the series is basically in limbo so we can't even get them ported to current gen consoles.
Yuri and Alice are one of the few romances in a game I really adored. The soundtracks were great too, really unique style.
I'll throw in Spec Ops: The Line for an unknown game - when it came out people brushed it off as another standard military shooter when it's far more of a Silent Hill-ish psychological game that deals with some pretty heavy themes.

Not really "unknown", but outside of certain communities I literally never see the Rune Factory series talked about. It's basically Harvest Moon meets high fantasy JRPG: grow crops, romance townsfolk, and fight monsters in a number of different areas through a cohesive plotline. Highly recommend, Rune Factory 4 got a remaster for the Switch a few months ago and Rune Factory 5 is currently in development!
