TOPIC | cool/weird animals?
just remembered about naked mole rats and then infodumped my friends on them (off of what i gathered on wikipedia)
none of this is about how they look but i just wanted to tell people how WEIRD they are
Quote:
• the only eusocial mammals along another mole rat species (damaraland mole-rat)
• highly immune to cancer
• pretty much cold blooded
• doesnt feel pain
• can survive for a while in areas with 5% oxygen and is just super adapted to having very little of it, due to mostly living in burrows
• the first recorded instance of cancer in naked molerats was in two captive individuals and its believed the reason they got cancer is because they lived in an enviroment with 21% oxygen instead of 2-9%
• As of April 2017, it was not known how the naked mole-rat survives acidosis without tissue damage.
• live up to 32 years and is the longest living rodent
• once a female becomes a queen she literally just kinda. becomes longer.
• workers have multiple castes too
• certain molerats are dispersers and they exist to avoid more inbreeding and seek out queens of other colonies, and queens also like molerats that arent related to their colony more
• mostly eat tubers (so like potatoes and carrots i think, not sure molerats eat exactly these though) which are huge compared to molerats, and one can last a colony months if not years, "as they eat the inside but leave the outside, allowing the tuber to regenerate"
• also they look gross as hell LMAO

Interesting creature is the Dumbo Octopus. Check out Oceana.org for more on that that one; they even have a short video, but I don't know how to get it over here.

This is a giant burrowing cockroach - Macropanesthia rhinoceros. They live in Australia. Unlike the stereotypical cockroach - mainly American cockroach, Periplaneta americana -, they don't have wings and play an important part in the ecosystem. They can digest eucalyptus, which causes serious poisoning to humans. They make burrows, in which they mainly live and have babies.

That moth thing is a Creatonotos gangis. They belong to the subfamily of Arctiinae, which contains tiger moths. They live in Africa, Asia, and Australia. The specimen in the picture is a male since it has released its hair-pencils (coremata) out. It uses them to release pheromones to attract females.
