Most advice I've been finding tells me at least one of my battling dragons should have Eliminate but 220k in the AH feels super steep D: I suppose I could drop 220-230 gems on a stone too but I'm wondering if I should just farm a lower-level venue to have a shadow of a chance for it to drop?

For me dropping the cash was worth it as the return was fairly quick but it depends on you!
It's a rare drop so could take some time but if you'd prefer to save your treasure and gems it's an easy farm. Just. Long.

I'm not the poster but I have trained my main party without eliminate by only using scratch and bite to regain health in harder fights while following this exact guide. It takes a tad longer but I managed to get them all to lv 25l in like a week on a x2 EXP event so it shouldn't take you longer than 2-3 weeks.
Use venues that are the exact match to your dragons and use those two to stay as long as possible and refresh the page right before your dragons die, at least that worked for me.
If you really want an eliminate, don't forget to answer all of Tomo's questions correctly, use an answers guide if you have to, since there is a slim chance of getting that from her too

With a dedicated Mire Flyer or Ghostlight Ruins level 25 dragon with eliminate, you can train 2 dragons to level 25 in a weekend. (Possibly in a single day if you have like 10-12 hrs to burn on it.)
Updated leveling guide is
here - Duke's guide (this one) shows up in all the search results, but it's outdated. (Not exactly wrong, just doesn't have new info for the newer venues.)
Maki's coli builds guide has different builds for different focuses. Mire Flyer is fastest for training. Something built for Harpy's Roost is probably fastest for high-value loot & food. There are special builds for Kelp Beds, Golem Workshop & the Portal, because those are the hardest. (Golem Workshop is the hardest.)
The
Sedona Build doesn't use eliminate; you can use that. It's much slower, but it does work.
Elims drop in Blooming Grove and higher; you can set up a Sedona dragon or two and farm in Grove/Cave/Falls until you get one.
Or you farm until you have enough money to buy one, because it really does speed things up that much.

vickie9toes many flights have resources to help new players, so check out your flight forums/discord to see if there is anything to get your dragons trained or borrow an equipped trainer to help you build your own team. And once you buy the first eliminate and have a good fodder trainer, you can make back the money in a couple hours by training and exalting fodder. Do that for awhile and you will either be in the coli long enough for another one to drop or you will have enough money to equip more if you want.
The fairgrounds is also pretty helpful to save up the money early on, but really the eliminate is completely worth it if you are interested in using the coli regularly.

vickie9toes Hello fellow Windy! You should hop into the Wind flight discord if you haven't yet, there's lots of us eager to help you out! We also have a "battlestone bank" - a way to help get you set up with the stones you need for cheaper than AH prices.
You can find the discord info and how to get access in the Wind-specific forums :)

I hope I'm ok asking a question here, but it seems that whenever I take two of my lvl25 guys plus one dragon I want to level up into the coli, I never get any xp??
What am I doing wrong? I've tried different arenas, attacking with the level pet, having the level pet get attacked...to no avail )8
