Or, A Power Struggle
Wind vs Light
September 27 - October 3

Hello Flight Rising!
This week, Wind (hello) and Light are going head to head in an all out Conquest Battle for Dominance.

What is an all-out dom battle?

It is when two flights agree to fight each other for the top spot on the mysterious dominance monolith, in a planned way. Both flights will exalt as many dragons as possible, and spend a lot of currency doing it. It will get expensive, and no dragon on the auction house will be safe!

If you do not want your dragon exalted do not put in on the AH this week. There is no price tag that will protect it.

The theme for this battle is Solar vs Wind Power, with ecofuturism and solarpunk flavor. Turbines, windmills, solar panels and sunsails! Also a lot of pastoral and agricultural sensibilities.

Welcome to Brightbreeze
Brightbreeze is an idyllic co-op founded by Wind and Light dragons. Here you will find rich farmland bracketed by stately forests of pine to the Light side, and melodic stands of bamboo to the Wind side. Nestled in the heart of it all, a bustling village of Wind and Light artisans, craftsdrakes, dreamers.

Brightbreeze aims to be the most successful joint venture between two elemental regions Sornieth has ever seen, but there is just one small problem: As Brightbreeze’s star rises, so does the demand for energy to power their multudinous expansions. To solve Brightbreeze’s energy concerns, its inhabitants must determine which power source is most suitable: Solar power, or wind energy?

Wherever the answer lies, one thing is certain: Brightbreeze will need all the help it can get to build the power grid and expand its borders to match the ambitions of its citizenry.

Will you help us build the most potent wind-fueled power grid Sornieth has ever seen?

Orange birds fly across an aqua sky with bamboo and a windmill below them. There is text that originally read Out of Flight Wind Birding but a sign hangs over it to make it read Out of Flight Wind Boarding

A look at the Brightbreeze Birding Society

Over the past 4 weeks, the Brightbreeze Birding Society has been in the field surveying thousands of birds previously unheard of in Sornieth. A great migration, which we can only attribute to the pull of Brightbreeze itself!

While the migration has ended and our community has gone full swing into powering Brightbreeze, here are some of the findings made by our most esteemed birders.

A horizontal divider made from rope and ribbon. Green bells and pinwheels are attached along the rope and a Wind banner is tied in the center, blowing in the breeze.

Wind's out-of-flight boarding program ran from August 30th - September 26 and is now CLOSED. We boarded 26,919 dragons to 293 boarders. Thank you everyone!

Boarders were rewarded with raffle tickets based on the number of dragons and days held, and a set of 12 birding badges which they could earn in full by offering 31 spaces.

Over the course of our boarding period, a post for each bird badge was made to Dom Watch, with notes from our very own Brightbreeze birders.

A white and orange koa'e kea gliding through the air while surrounded by a fire aura Koa'e kea
Searing soarer
Known by many names, including white-tailed tropicbird, koa'e kea, and, perhaps least surprisingly, longtail. This magnificent seabird has been known to steal the show in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, where it delights in using the warm updrafts from the calderas to fly effortlessly through the air. This bird's harmonious relationship to volcanoes made the Ashfall Wastes an obvious choice for its new home.

Bearded vulture
Osteological optimist
One of this formidable vulture's alternative names is ossifrage, from the Latin for "bone breaking". One way this bird feeds itself is to drop its food from a great height in order to break the bones for consumption. It's estimated that bone makes up 70-90% of the bearded vulture's diet. The bearded vulture exemplifies survival in extremes and a "waste not, want not" attitude which makes it right at home in the Scarred Wasteland!

Flawless fisher
These waders are happy beachcombers on shores worldwide. Perhaps surprisingly, oystercatchers do not feed exclusively on oysters -- indeed, they seem happy to feast on anything they can pluck from the sea or shore, depending on where they find themselves in the world. The oystercatcher's seafaring lifestyle is a natural fit for the Sea of a Thousand Currents!

Sunbittern
Solar stunner
This bird hails from the tropical regions of Central and South America, where it is typically difficult to spot with the naked eye due to its magnificent crypsis. During mating displays, or when threatened, this bird reveals its powerfully eyespotted posterior wing feathers. The pattern evokes dappled sunlight, making the Sunbeam Ruins a perfect place of respite.

A white ptarmigan mid-walk while surrounded by an ice aura. Ptarmigan
Fortitudinous forager
The name ptarmigan is derived from the Scottish Gaelic tarmachan meaning "croaker," owing to the rock ptarmigan's croaky cry. Indeed, many ptarmigan species are beloved for their entertaining or unusual noises, though the ptarmigan itself values going unperceived in its chilly tundra and upland territories -- such that all but the red grouse turn white in the winter to make themselves invisible in snow. They are hardy foragers who are capable of toughing it out in some of the least hospitable biomes on earth, which makes them kindred spirits to dragons of the Southern Icefields!

Secretary bird
Terrestrial trampler
This gallant strider is endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, where it is fond of taking long walks through open grassland. Much of the secretary bird's life is spent on foot, though they are adequate fliers in their own right. They eat anything they can get their beak around, or, perhaps more accurately, anything they can introduce to the powerful stomping of their feet. At ease both in the air and on land, the secretary bird is quick to make tracks in Dragonhome!

A purple great potoo with its mouth open while surrounded by a shadow aura. Potoo
Immaculate insectivore
Potoos are nocturnal birds with strikingly large eyes from tropical South and Central America. By day, the potoo rests upright on tree stumps against which they are perfectly camouflaged. Their eyelids have specialised slits through which the potoo can see even while its eyes are closed, allowing it to disappear almost completely against its perch. Its nocturnal nature, combined with its unparalleled cryptic adaptations, make it fit right into the Tangled Wood!

Channel-billed cuckoo
Reliable rainbird
The channel-billed cuckoo hails from Australia, New Guinea, and Indonesia. It boasts being the largest in two respects, being the largest cuckoo and the largest brood parasite. This bird is known in Australia as the storm-bird, as its migratory return aligns with the start of the rainy season -- and helps it feel right at home in the Shifting Expanse!

A green kakapo mid-walk while surrounded by a nature aura. Kakapo
Whiskered wanderer
Known also as the owl-parrot, the kakapo is the heaviest parrot on Earth, in addition to being the only flightless one. This gentle giant is endemic to New Zealand, where its perfectly mossy plumage helps it blend into the forest floor. At home in the bounty of nature, it was no surprise at all to see this bewhiskered being scurry away into the underbrush of the Viridian Labyrinth at the first opportunity!

Nicobar pigeon
Intrepid island-hopper
This pigeon takes its name from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India. It is found on many islands and archipelagos throughout Southeast Asia. The Nicobar pigeon wanders extensively to avoid predators and forage for fruit and grain. They fly single-file, with adult birds sporting a bright white tail to guide their flockmates during twilight travels. The Nicobar pigeon's wanderlust, combined with its flashy green attire, make it the life of the party on the Windswept Plateau!

Joyful jouster
The helmeted hornbill is found throughout the Sunda subregion, in parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra. The prominent casque on its head lends it its name, and makes for a powerful weapon in intraspecific combat, given that it is nearly completely solid. Doubtlessly the helmeted hornbill saw a fellow headwear enthusiast in the Arcanist, and was quick to land in the Starfall Isles!

Bird dog
Avian aficionado
Hold on... this one's already found on Sornieth! The hainu is a dog with wings. It's said that hainus are born when the Windsinger blesses an especially good dog with flight so that they may see the world and bring the joy of travel wherever they go. This would seem to explain why hainus are so common on the Windswept Plateau -- to the Windsinger, all dogs are especially good!
