TOPIC | [UI] General UI feedback
Hello everyone! It's been a little over 24 hours since we pushed yesterday's responsive UI update. We knew even with the advanced warning and maintenance reminder that this could be jarring, especially after 13 years of the same old web style user interface. It's why we've allowed the forums to be a space for your initial reactions and responses with minimal moderation. With that said, a multitude of generalized threads talking about the same issues can water down feedback, can lead to actionable feedback being lost in the shuffle, and even overwhelm your fellow players in general. For this reason, we will be moderating and condensing threads in the Flight Rising Discussion forum to this thread today. Our goals for this sticky thread are as follows: [list][*]Provide players with a sticky reminder of troubleshooting basic issues related to the update. [*]Redirect bug reports to the tracking thread if troubleshooting fails to resolve the issue. [*]Address some commonly reported issues to help focus feedback.

Our goals for this sticky thread are as follows:
  • Provide players with a sticky reminder of troubleshooting basic issues related to the update.
  • Redirect bug reports to the tracking thread if troubleshooting fails to resolve the issue.
  • Address some commonly reported issues to help focus feedback.
  • Redirect specific feedback to the correct forum or avenue.
  • Condense non-specific feedback for team review.

Troubleshooting

Please see Kaepora's April 27th update on bug fix and UI work here.

Many image disruptions following the update, like the double logo in the banner, can be resolved through clearing your browser's cache.

Flight Rising is an image-heavy browser game. Clearing your cache is the first trouble-shooting step when images are not displaying correctly, buttons aren't responding, etc.

Change your view type. This can be found in your Account Settings.

Themes can be applied to pages under development (like the forums) by opting into Experimental Mode, also found in your Account Settings.

Many reported bugs have been resolved since yesterday's launch. If a cache clear, change of View, and Experimental Mode do not resolve the issue for you and the issue is not documented (see below) as excluded in yesterday's announcement post, it's time to visit the tracking thread in the Bug Reports forum.

Legacy Pages

A few sections of the website will continue to use the old website layout until they can be fully ported to use the newer code base. These pages will not support the official theme system until they are fully migrated.

These pages include:
  • Coliseum
  • Jigsaw
  • Progenitor Creation
  • Runestones of the Arcanist
  • Shock Switch
  • Tidal Trouble

Due to the site-sized nature of the UI update, it is critical players reporting bugs follow the instructions listed out in the opening post. Failure to follow instructions leads to report bloat and takes engineer time away from diagnosing and fixing bugs.

Feedback

"I don't like the update" is a valid feeling and feedback.

At the same time, it's not actionable feedback. We are seeking actionable and specific feedback from our community.

We've also received some feedback over the past 24 hours that is inconsistent with the actual changes we've made. In order to differentiate (or identify) the cause, we're going to share some information about yesterday's update with you.

This section is not to dismiss your feedback. Our goal here is to help focus your feedback, which will help us with figuring out why something is being received or perceived a certain way. With an update of this size and it being a change after 13 years, the root cause could be anything from simply needing to adjust to an overall visual change (new glasses fishbowl effect) to a setting on the player side to something we can adjust or fix on the site-side. It could even be a bug or unintentional response based on your particular combination of browser and device!

Things to keep in mind going forward:

In making the site responsive for players on across the many device types used to access our game, compromises were necessary in all areas where resizing might happen. This includes areas of artwork, PNG icons, pop-ups, etc. The previous PNG icons were not responsive-design friendly. They cannot be brought back.

Both fonts used on the website, Mulish and Verdana, meet the requirements and best web practices for dyslexia-accessible fonts.

The font and font size of forum posts were not changed in Thursday's update. They remained 12px and Verdana. The line spacing in the forums was also not changed. The usernames initially were changed to Mulish, and then they were changed back to Verdana and enlarged.

Scenes have always had reduced opacity when not in scenic mode. This is now noticeable in the new UI when Dark and Slate are applied. This is not a bug, this is the UI working as intended.

As we mentioned in the announcement, the theme offerings are initial. Additional accessibility-focused themes based on player feedback are priority.

The only way we could offer themes and mobile device support is with the backend and UI update. A toggle to return to the static version of the site is not and will not be offered. Doing so requires hosting, supporting, and securing two distinct instances of the site.

If you have actionable and specific feedback to share on a particular change or system, you are welcome and invited to share that feedback with us through either the Suggestions forum or through Contact Us.

Non-Specific Feedback

You may use this thread over the weekend to share your non-specific feedback about the update with us.

Non-specific does not mean it's a free for all or that the Rules & Policies don't apply. Inflammatory comments, trolling, or attacks towards other players or our team will not be tolerated.

This is also not a space to tell players who don't like the update to "get over it." A big change happened, some things didn't land the way we'd intended, and the update can't be opted out of. Feeling frustrated and upset is a valid reaction and response.

If over the course of the thread or a discussion you hit upon something specific, please be sure to move that discussion to the Suggestions forum.

Work continues to finesse the update based on player feedback and address reported bugs. Thank you, for taking the time to read through and for sharing your feedback with us!

I don't know if this is "specific" or "nonspecific" but the settings page feels a little cluttered now, it's a bit hard to tell the box from the background.

This is a great post about the situation, I'm impressed it was able to be put together so quickly. I'm glad that updates and responses are happening so quickly, I think it is helping a lot with the morale of everyone experiencing the updates. With my display set to Desktop, I'm personally finding it mostly pretty comfy beyond a few things I think will be updated because they were unintended, and will simply hope for some aesthetic changes to things like the user info widget in the future. Other than the notification display, nothing is totally game-breaking (for me). I feel like you guys are handling this one exceptionally well, thank you.

EDIT: I will say that I do agree that it has lost some charm overall, and I hope that maybe future themes will also have graphical changes that introduce some whimsy back in the UI. I'd frankly love to see stuff like lair tabs looking like bookmarks or parchment, stuff like that. Go full medieval times with the place. But in the meantime, losing the colorful buttons for messages/notifications/etc. really did suck a lot of pleasantness out of everything. Looking forward to seeing what can be done with themes in the future though!!

@Dormiebasne I had felt the same way too lol. There is a dropdown menu where you can select a specific settings category. Each category represents one of those little boxes. Its quite helpful lol

it may not be a perfect solution, but idk what would be. If you think of something post it in suggestions, ill stop by!

Looking good, staff. I think with the extra tweaks and bug fixes the UI change looks a lot less underbaked than before. For some actionable feedback:

- Some more contrast in the account widget on the top right of the screen (on computers) would be good. On darker themes the icons can be a little hard to see, and I can imagine them being hard to see for some players on light theme too. On default/light theme I'd like to see the darker brown color used somewhere up there so the whole segment isn't so light in tone.

- Dragon hover widgets on the lair page are pretty large now and block sight of a lot of the lair page. I'd like for there to at least be a second "collapsed" option for these that maybe only shows most important information and the broadcast message.

- Numbers should go back on pings. Those are important especially for people running big events who may have more pings than display on one alerts opening.

My main complaints as it stands: the excessive padding/bold in places, especially the forums lists and dragon drop downs, as everyone else has stated many times. Some of the buttons could be like, more greyed out/clearer/better contrast, for example when a fam is bonded for the day. I won't bog this down with more mentions of those. I'm sure people have or will say it like 20x more LOL

Edit: a lot of my other problems will likely be solved with themes, I know those aren't probably a priority but just one warm/midtone version asap would likely be a big helpfor many also

But I also would like to share a theory/maybe some other people had the same exp: once the forum threads regained the staggered beige color tones between posts, a LOT of my motion sickness improved. It's possible that when it's all one tone and scrolling, there is less for the brain to like, grab on to? And this was responsible for the issue for several people - which is maybe something useful to apply in more places/ways around the site? Or was more present in other pages than it is now and is part of the problem. Maybe? :)

I really appreciate the effort that went into the recent overhaul; features like dark mode and the ability to adjust screen width are genuinely great additions and make the site more comfortable to use and I finally dont have lots of floating blank white space.

That said, some of the changes have made the experience feel less intuitive than before. The new design loses some of the quirky, early-internet charm that gave the site its personality, and the updated graphics come across more like a mobile game aesthetic.

More importantly, a few quality-of-life features seem to have been lost or disrupted—things like easily copying usernames, previewing bios (especially after they broke in the update), the weird treasure k, off outlined black star on dragon bios, FIRST GENERATION losing its special color, and consistent font sizing. These details made the site feel smooth and user-friendly, and their absence is noticeable and a little confusing especially since most are used as visual cues for various things.

Overall, it feels like a step toward a more modern look, which is great, but at the same time a step back in terms of convenience and usability.

I think it'll get better with time but as always some of the choices made by staff are baffling and makes me wonder how some bugs get past testing; I wish they would ask or poll the community some before large changes like this it might help some issues.

Overall impression 5/10

I guess if we're giving feedback (hopefully in a polite and not inflammatory manner cause I feel like we were warned pretty in advance with examples and this was a hugely desired update) I have a few notes! 1) The K debacle! I am someone who has trouble reading numbers, I cannot visualize numbers in my head. Idk why, I just really can't. With the K shortening the totals, I cannot visualize what the actual total is [emoji=coatl sad size=1] I love the commas, that makes life SO SO SO much easier for me, I have wanted them for years. Huge step in the right direction!! But the commas were ALL I needed. I'd love it if we could get rid of the K. 2) Alerts! It is not obvious to me how many new alerts I have now. I am scatterbrained and signed up to GASP, so I get a lot of pings and often do not remember which I already saw. It helps when I know how many new pings I got, and there is that slightly different colored bg they used to have on the legacy UI. We've lost these now, so I'm having trouble keeping track [emoji=coatl scared size=1] 3) Contrast! I think this is obviously gonna be the biggest thing that comes up. Slate works relatively fine for me, definitely a huge improvement over the legacy UI which strained my eyes and made the site unusable when I was dealing with headaches or eye strain. But some of the contrast could still use some review, it can be a little high in places compared to some of the softer legacy colors. Like the new health bar is very saturated, and so is some of the big black bold text compared to the legacy soft reds. We're going in the right direction, but I've seen a lot of people have issues in this regard and I feel for them. 4) Text feels a little small in default mode? My eyeballs do not like it as much, it is a teeny bit straining. Yet somehow the forums page feels huge? Strange... 5) Move waystone back to where it used to be. It simply looks weird floating off in the sidebar like that, bring him home. Otherwise I am pretty happy. I have wanted dark mode for years, it is a huge QOL for me, and so are the commas.

Thank you for making this thread! It's a great idea to have a hub for general feedback.

Here are some of my current biggest issues with the new layout (not in any specific order of importance):

1. The new icons used for PMs, friend requests, pings and settings feel like they don't grab your attention enough. I think it is generally okay to leave them greyed out while inactive, but I think it would be better to color them in when they are active (i.e. you receive a notification, the bell turns yellow). I think it would also be better to add the number back if possible.

1.b. SPeaking of notifications, please let us click anywhere outside of the box to close the window. Right now you are required to click on the bell again to close it and it is rather annoying and inconvenient.

2. Please, please consider adding the Bestiary and Achievement count back to the userframe. I really enjoyed seeing these and it often makes me want to pursue more achievement points and familiars. Right now they are sort of "out of sight, out of mind" and it will definitely make me think about these features less. I'm not a fan of information being removed from this area.

3. The icon for the well-fed bonus looks a lot like a "hamburger menu" icon and I found myself trying to click on it the first day this new layout was launched, thinking it was maybe the new icon used for the dropdown that used to be located by your username. It's a bit confusing and could benefit from being changed to something else.

4. I see you've added the exact currency number back to the vault when you click on "withdraw", so that is really nice. I would prefer it to never be truncated at all but if this can't be changed then this is a fine middle ground.

5. This is a smaller nitpick, but I am personally not a fan of the new font used for headers (Mulish). It doesn't match the other fonts used on the site and feels out of place. I also don't prefer the color of the text being changed from red to black.

6. I don't enjoy the new tooltips for hovering over dragons. I see they've been made a bit smaller but they are still rather large and feel more difficult to immediately parse information on. A user has made a fantastic mockup of a potential new design here (there is another mockup made by somebody else on this thread that also looks rather good)

7. There are some rather strange UI decisions regarding things like Sophie. Right now if I view an item that I currently cannot create, it is hard to tell whether or not the option to do so is available, as the "Sew" button looks like it can still be clicked on. This extends to a lot of other areas on the site, where buttons that are currently disabled/inactive don't appear different enough from buttons that can be.

8. Another small nitpick, but the font size on the forum index (where you can click on a forum to enter, i.e. Dragon Share, News, etc.) is very large and a bit overwhelming to look at. Making it even just a little bit smaller I think would look nicer.

9. I think the "by [username]" below the topic titles should be made a little bit smaller. Right now they are the same size as the topic and it sort of "competes" for your attention. More focus should be placed on the title of the topic, not the user who created it.

10. Another small nitpick, I think the hover highlight on the side menu is a bit much and could maybe be toned down a little.

11. And another teeny nitpick - The "stroke/drop shadow" on usernames on the forums seems a little bit more "crunchy" than it used to be (on the old site layout).

The last thing I can think of right now, and this is not really an immediate piece of feedback but something for the future:

12. Please consider adding more site themes, like flight-themed ones with non-generic banners (you can even just re-use the lair ones)! They are very fun bits of personal customization. I would also really like to see low-contrast themes sooner than later if anything.
Thank you for making this thread! It's a great idea to have a hub for general feedback.

I'll make a nice signature eventually :(
