Okay, so I've seen some fan dragons, and since I'm waiting on dragon breeding cool downs I've been wondering: how do I make my own fan dragon?

I know there's no wrong way to do it, but I haven't been happy with any of my attempts scrys, so I'm looking for help.

I either want to attempt Six from Little Nightmares or Powder from Arcane, if that helps.

I like looking at what other people did for inspiration and maybe even more ideas for dragons! I also like to scry colors first, and then try and use apparel to make up for any missing colors or details.

My whole lair is fandragons with the newer ones on the last two pages of my main tab, if you want some general examples.

I try to get the colors and genes as close to the character design as possible, and then use apparel to fill in what's missing. Note that different breeds will distribute colors differently, which may affect the final aesthetic. For example, some poses show the primary color more, while another might display underbelly colors really well. Being familiar with accent colors is also very helpful. Don't be afraid to get a little abstract too! One of my fandragons has constellation, despite the original character not really looking like a starry sky. I used it because he still has star shapes on his outfit and thematically it just seemed to make sense for his character.

im afraid I’m unfamiliar with those characters (im just weirdo tho, ik there are a bunch of people with arcane fandragons who can give you more specific advice!), but for generalized fandragon tips, my advice is to try to find something about the character that you want to transfer to dragon form. it can be anything from a specific coloring/marking, an outfit piece, all the way to their personality, but whatever is most important to You in making a representation of the fandragon.

in terms of coloring or marking, it can help inform your decision on what genes to go for. like “oh this character uses magic, I think they should have Runes as a tert” “theyre in a cyberpunk, so metallic or wasp would be a good primary”, things like that. sometimes the apparel is this starting point, like my most recently worked on (but not completed…butterfly gene expensive) fandragon is henchman twenty-one from the venture bros, and the big red and yellow goggles are SO iconic that I couldnt not have em. so I started the scrying process by trying to figure out what poses + breeds could wear goggles like that if I played with the layering, and only a few poses actually came out with the layering looking right—my favorite was obelisk male for a few reasons (I like the bulk, and also the manestyle felt right) but BASICALLY, I was led to this conclusion just bc I wanted to make the goggles right

in terms of personality, this is subjective but sometimes the expressions or Vibes of certain poses just feel like a character, you know? that or the way the breed is described in the encyclopedia matches the character. ive done both of these at different times and for different reasons: some characters ive made pearlcatchers bc pc lore has them as like, the petit-bourgeoisie so I consider them Bougie Acting Dragons, and some characters ive made pcs bc I felt like the expression from whatever pose was calm and measured and thus suited the character really well.

having any kind of “starting point” like this makes it much easier for me to start on a fandragon, bc then I have like one thing “locked down”. like, if okay this one character NEEDS to be an aether, then I dont have to worry about apparel and I can focus on trying to represent that in genes. or, flipside, this character NEEDS this FR apparel, I can skip all ancient breeds and linebreaking terts in my scry process. narrowing the pool helps me really work on the possibilities.

having a “they should be this breed” is proooobably the strongest starting point for me, since my brain is usually quick to say yea or nay on whether a character Feels right for a breed. if you cant pick one, you can always just cross those they Cant be off your list, and you’ve got a way easier time of it!

I will say that these tips lean towards the “scrying from scratch” approach, and while you absolutely may find the exact right colors + eye type you need, depending on how particular you are you may have to content yourself with either only getting a partial color/eye match, or spending a bit of time and coin on making the PERFECT fandragon to match your scry. neither is better or worse of course its just that depending on what you want to invest in you may have to settle for something thats not quiiite your scry, but plenty of people (aka me from time to time) just grab the closest dragon they can find to their General Vision on the AH (eg color ranges instead of specific colors, genes, etc) and pretty them up from there

So for me, personally, the first most important thing is finding a breed/pose that I feel embodies the character.

Then I look for overall color scheme, I actually usually start by making an outfit on a manequin in the dressing room. Then I look at dragon colors/gene combos that can get me the requisite color pallet. (See for Kozmotis, I had the outfit/skin all planned out then did up the dragon.)

Then we get into EYE COLOR. For some characters eye color is obvious, but for a bunch of others it's less obvious. This is one of thise things that I'm willing to bend on a little if the rest of the dragon is perfect (Cheshire here has some unfortunate shadow eyes, but I've masked that with some creative apparel layering.)

I don't usually use ancients because Apparel is a huge part of what makes a fan dragon for me, theough like I said the first most important thing to me is breed/pose that embodies the character, Loki is an excellent example of UMAs making up for lack of apparel.

Really a fandragon is just what you make of it.

When I make Fandragon scries, gene guides are my best friend.

Figuring out what color scheme you want then seeing what genes can fulfill more than one requirement can be very helpful for narrowing down options

For example: if I got a character with a mostly orange scheme with some blue added in, I skip to the orange colors in a guide for the gene I'm interested in and see which ones have blue accents I could use. I also look through the blue options for good orange accents, too.

@Bronzewing @Waveswept and @RheoTastic Thank you! Your advice helped me more than you can imagine. I'm still working on my Powder design, but I was able to put this dragon together for Six: [img]https://www1.flightrising.com/dgen/preview/dragon?age=0&body=10&bodygene=76&breed=19&element=2&eyetype=0&gender=1&tert=42&tertgene=67&winggene=146&wings=43&auth=6f052facc2084c019c365e2839746954e6e27784&dummyext=prev.png Scry: [morphology=4891607] I was focusing on Six's famous yellow rain coat and dark hair, and this one hands down is the best one I've made so far.

Mostly because I'm pretty familiar with all the existing lore of FRs dragon breeds, I kinda vibecheck the character I'm making a fandragon of to see if there's any particular breed they work best as. The flight of origin, the temperament, fighting style, and general quirks of a breed tend to be what I consider in addition to overall looks, though I can't say that my own tastes in dragon breeds don't also color my choice a little bit. I sometimes match eye color to the character, other times (if im making a fandragon of a character with elemental powers) I chose the element instead. If a character has magic that doesn't quite match with a flight, then I'll pick the closest one. Or if a character has a particularly strong thematic element to a flight lore point then I'll pick that flight. In the past I haven't been particularly bothered with eye type, but with my latest projects it's like "well, im breeding for the colors I want anyways so why not rent a nest to get the right eyes too." For colors? Typically I go off major colors from the character's design, which usually is like. Hair color + any particularly important accent colors. It's also pretty vibes-based. Genes are pretty much "any strong associations I have with the character." It's hard to describe but like I just go into the scrying workshop and the ability to design awesome fandragons just overcomes me and after an hour or two I emerge with 5-10 new saved scries and at least one new breeding project. Def seconding the idea of nailing down a breed first, since it's easier to work from there.
AS FOR BREEDING PROJECTS:
Flight Rising Color Predictor is your new best friend.
Search the AH for dragons with the same colors as your scried fandragon. Cry when none show up. Search the whole site. Weep in despair when there are only 7 unexalted non-progenitor dragons with the colors you want and 4 are in inactive lairs. If you're lucky, one will be fodder you can message the owner about to make an offer on. If you're unlucky, that's when you start searching the AH for two dragons with colors close to the colors you need, and that's when you get to open FR color predictor and roughly 10 tabs of for-sale dragons to test their color ranges. Buy the two with the tightest range, consider if you want to rent nests for the right eye colors, and get ready to spend anywhere from a few weeks (if you're lucky) to maybe even years (if you're not) breeding your pair(s) to get the dragon you want. If your fandragon isn't an Imperial (or wildclaw, depending on your budget), you can breed-change the pair into plentiful dragons so they get a shorter cooldown. If your fandragon is and imperial, I wish you the best of luck. Check the AH/dragon search every so often to see if a dragon with the colors you want has popped up, or a dragon who can narrow your parent pair's range.
Best of luck with the fandragons!!

For me it's colours. Often time I'll hatch or find a dragon who is a little too perfect not to be a fan dragon: I bred this one and realised his colours were perfect for Raziel from The Legacy of Kain series. For Pow-Pow, I'd maybe find one of the smaller, cuter breeds and maybe an eternal youth scroll? Since Powder stopped being Powder when she was a child.

League of Legends dragons lets go!!! I don't have any Arcane characters atm but I've got a tab of League ones lol I think it's best to work with Vibes. A lot of people like to pick moderns by default so that they can dress them like the character, but I don't always think that's necessary! Sometimes for me it's about a character's feature that I can represent with a specific gene, or it's about what breed just feels like the character. For example I chose Veilspun for shadow assassin Kayn, because his long hair is such a big feature of his. I picked Sandsurge for Rhaast, because the large horns and sharp edges worked best for him. As for how to acquire your fan dragon, you'll probably have to do a breeding project to get the exact colors/element you need for the character! Here's how I get mine together: - Use the Dragon Search feature - Search for dragons that match 2/3 of the colors you need exactly. If you can't find any available dragon with all 3 colors matching, you'll need to make sure that the two dragons you get will have a range between them that can meet the last color requirement. - Even if a dragon isn't on the AH, sometimes they will be in people's fodder/exalt tabs. Usually you can kindly message the person for the dragon you want and offer to buy it, and people are pretty generous and will often be happy to sell or give dragons to you for your breeding projects if they were just planning on exalting it anyway. - Once you have both dragons, unless they're already the breed you want, breed change them into Plentiful breeds. This will give them the lowest cooldown (15 days) so that you can breed them as frequently as possible until you get the colors you need. - Use nest rental networks like this one if you need an eye type that is different than your flight. - Once you have a dragon with the colors and eye type you want, apply genes as needed! Good luck on your fandragon journey!! It can be a lot of time and effort but if you ask me it's soooo worth it! Edit: also, here's my attempted scry for Powder/Jinx! Mulberry/Caribbean/Caribbean. Really wanted to pick an ancient that had Braids because I think her braids are a crucial part of her design lol
