Genre aside, I think that Wind Flight might have sculptures sort of like the "singing ringing tree" - which is made of metal pipes and make the natural wind produce a sort of otherwordly resonance! I recommend looking them up! (I think there's 3, now?)

It might not be metal in Wind's case, but maybe wood or bamboo? The sound would be absorbed a little differently but the core idea of it should still work!

"Well, you get down the fiddle and you get down the bow
Kick off your shoes and you throw 'em on the floor.
Dance in the darkness 'cause there ain't no light,
Shadow clan Saturday night."

I agree that Shadow is violins/ fiddles. Violins if your clan is fancy, fiddles if you're in the backwoods. Eerie songs that sound like darker Celtic and Cajun folk music is probably what my clan listens to, preferably with a singer that sounds like David Bowie. I'd imagine it sounds more like the devil's music rather than Johnny's music in "The Devil Went Down to Georgia".

THIS IS SOMETHING IVE THOUGHT ABOUT IMMENSELY. these are just the ones that like. ive thought even More about. but if people like these ill definitely do the other flights cuz i got my ideas stewing in there. [emoji=light rune size=1] heavy usage of string and keyboard instruments and choirs. in light flight orchestras, you'll have a large portion dedicated to vocalists and typically less on the instruments as they're more supplementary. the music itself is archaic in its tradition yet awe-inspiring across generations. common light flight instruments include harps, celestas, lutes, organs, and mandolins. [emoji=plague rune size=1] little to no usage of traditional instruments but rather focuses on heavily improvisational diy instruments (made of naught but the best of bones, sinew, hides!) and war chants. plague dragons typically have small tightly knit bands that travel across the wastes and the rest of sornieth, shrieking bombastic songs of conquest and strength while grimly touting the remains of their finest kills. common plague flight instruments include....whatever they can scrounge up, really. [emoji=shadow rune size=1] a very strong appreciation for the art of theatre and performance, shadow flight gets pretty experimental with their music. the absolute thespians of the flight are regarded for keeping their traditions of cabaret and opera well into relevance. some dragons, however, prefer differing genres while still keeping the performance aspect of things. particularly in the newer generations of the flight, theres quite the interest in jazz and ambient synthy tunes (in my head i imagine they're big into the likes of dark ambient and dungeon synth). common shadow flight instruments include brass instruments, bowed string instruments, harpsichords, and analogue synths. [emoji=lightning rune size=1] SORNIETH'S #1 INDUSTRIAL PRODUCERS. with the advent of technology, lightning flight instantly got on top of the electronic music world. they're incredibly bombastic and Charged in their performances, screeching lyrics with many mechanical motifs while hammering away at electric guitars with more distortion pedals than you can dream of...its good stuff to get work done to! AND you can dream about overthrowing your manager to it, to! common lightning flight instruments include electric bass and guitars, synthesizers, circuit-broken instruments, and diy noise machines. [emoji=fire rune size=1] if lightning flight is the industrial powerhouse, fire flight are the real metalheads. both flights take a lot of influence from each other's music and have quite the history of collaboration! you love to see [s]unions working[/s] artists collaborating together! fire's style of metal takes a lot of influence from thrash, doom and noise metal. they like it loud, and they like it heavy. many young, rebellious dragons all across sornieth come flocking down to see their favorite metal bands. some parents are concerned...but it's nothing to worry about. [i]it's not a phase, mom[/i]. common fire flight instruments include electric guitars/bass and heavy percussion

Listening to this music and thinking about this thread again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_iJcEk-a74

It's called A Tale of Sea Dragons. I want to think it would be an FR music, but I can't place it.

I imagine Nature flight having music kinda like baka/bayaka where the melodies all wind around each other: https://youtu.be/v8kobQSd8C8?si=HU1yd3FMTK4f2wrD&t=17. (It's one of my favorite music styles. Listen at least until the percussion comes in, further if you can.)

Wind would have chimes and drums and woodwinds. They might have a few stringed instruments akin to sitars.

Plague would be lots of percussion and maybe a bone woodwind. I imagine they'd also have something like a sitar in their instruments, but it would have deeper tones than the Wind version.

Light would have music like the ancient Greeks, with lyres and woodwinds. Maybe some brass instruments.

Arcane would have metallic and crystal instruments and complicated rhythms and melodies.

Ice would probably have some woodwinds and slow and melodic songs, kinda like old Gregorian chants, or maybe yoiks like the Sami people, with simple rhythms.

Shadow would sound like Western folk music, I think. Lots of string instruments, lots of long verses and word-play to show off memory and comedic skills.

Water would have really interesting music - it would have to carry nicely through water. I don't think there'd be anything comparable here except maybe from undersea creatures. I imagine their music would be an acquired taste for most dragons because it sounds less vibrant above the water.

I cannot think what Earth, Lightning, or Fire would have.

I would imagine that Snappers were the main sources of original music in Earth, so maybe folk songs that tell their endless stories? Maybe a little Shanty in there, as well!

Songs that kinda fit what i'm thinking of is like Erlkonig or Herr Manelig

Idk, I imagine it being specifically European(generally, specific country changes among groups) folk tunes ;v;

Random Lore Idea:
Tundras have scent-based music. They have trouble remembering songs but can associate certain themes and melodies with scents. So when they smell the right thing - a dragon, a campfire, a type of food - they'll start humming. They've passed down folk songs for hundreds of years that way, the song always changing but the feeling remaining intact. Some of the songs are believed to stem from the Gaolers (in fact, researchers have found what they believe is the original lyrics to a lot of common songs after Gaolers emerged).

The more traditional Gaolers actively hate this, because to them perseveration is everything. Their songs - largely reliant on singing with no instruments - are kept as close to the original as possible. Deviation is seen as tarnishing the original intent.

This has led to a lot of debate in the Southern Icefield over the meaning of preservation. Gaolers insist it's about remaining close to the original, while Tundras are adamant that its about keeping the songs alive.

@thaumiel i'd love to hear more for the other flights if you want to write more... not just because im curious what you would say nature flight would listen to.

my minecraft answer earlier was genuine but the first actual instrument i could think of for nature was a banjo. for plague actually i want to say flutes because the oldest musical instruments we've found are flutes made out of bones (someone else mentioned the same thing but i think the knowledge of this can make the idea stick harder).

lightning would make dnb naturally.. arcane is techno or happy hardcore

I guess Shadow's music could go a lot of different ways. The playing games aspect of their flight could translate into playful music, like some music you could hear at a carnival. I'm thinking accordion.

Buuuuut I also think haunting music would work really well, just like with the aesthetic.

So I'm gonna summarize potentially popular instruments in shadow as: string (orchestral) instruments, accordion, potentially theremin (though that's probably a little more popular in lightning, I agree,) a smidgen of glockenspiel and/or vibraphone, and celesta. Also someone mentioned music boxes and I am hard seconding that.

I think a potentially good example of some Shadow music would be Om Du Möter Varg by Detektivbyrån. Also I just highly reccomend giving their music a listen.

Also, somebody already mentioned tesla coils for lightning. I don't know if anyone brought this up, but there's a cover of Rasputin (and several other songs) played on a tesla coil, it's so neat. Flash warning if you watch it, of course. It's done by Franzoli Electronics. :)
