It's brit back again with some more graphs for you, this time in collaboration with @Squidragon to bring you a summary of dom in 2021!
Last year I made a thread for 2020 Dom Stats and I found that it was a useful place to refer back to throughout the year, so I wanted to do it again, but like, better.
The main source of placement data is dom watch's fabulous and fascinating archive.
Dragons Exalted data is tracked by DeviBrigard in this thread. Flight and location population data is tracked by Squidragon here.
Battle data is provided in collaboration with Water, Ice, Earth, and Shadow dom teams and compiled by Squid and I.
Placement Data
Overall, things are pretty similar to how they happened last year, with Earth taking the lion's share of firsts and Water and Plague taking the next two spots. This time, we also have Ice and Light taking more placements than the mean (4.33, if dom wins were shared equally you would expect each flight to get 4ish per year). The mode (most common amount of firsts) is down to 2 from 3.
The dip in wins from Earth this year is the first we've seen in a while, which can be attributed to time spent preparing for WvE and more conquests from other flights. (Plague, Light, Wind, etc.)
In terms of total placements (firsts, seconds, and thirds) we see Light continuing to trend towards a more average number of placements when previously they were an outlier like Earth in this category. We see massive gains from Wind, but other than that, not too many notable changes here.
Here we have average weekly placement (12 is first place, 11 is 2nd, etc) for 2021 plotted against overall flight size. Aside from Shadow and Earth as our bookends, this is all over the place, which is neat to see! There's a lot more than size that matters.
Squid was also able to grab the amount of lairs at each size tier at the time of the world map expansion. We see a little bit more of a correlation between the ancient lair percentage and average placement, but it's still not perfect.
What do these numbers mean?
Not much in a one-on-one situation, as winning battles and placing frequently require different strategies and strengths. Some of these strategies overlap, but not all of them, and we've seen a few battle victories that would be surprising if you predicted the winner based on placement data.
However, frequent placing can be seen as a result of dom activity, whether that is organized pushing or a more consistent exalting output day to day. There are other ways to measure activity as well, as some flights are less concerned with placing during their profit pushes than others.
As for this year, here's what pushes were announced by flights to Dom Watch.
A few less pushes were announced ahead of time on Dom Watch this year - down to 67 from 75. Flights are of course entitled to keep their plans secret, or not to bother announcing when a push has no OOF components to advertise.
This is another way to measure dom activity, in conjunction with the placement data.
