I would not recommend Dappervolk as it currently stands, actually.
I was part of the Beta testers years ago and I've been on the site since it's official open launch and I have nothing to do. I had nothing to do within three months on the site. Once you work through the story, which is a long haul drag with a lot of clicking, fake roadblocks, and choices that seem to matter but actually don't, there's nothing to do.
Sure, you can collect one of each pet. But the pets don't do anything beyond boost your stats by a paltry amount. They are not unique. The skin/accent system on the site is atrocious leading to no reselling, no market, and if the designer decides they want to, they can revoke your access to the skin at any time, or if they leave the site their skin is dormant forever. If you want to change out skins on the same pet, the old skin access is forever lost to you.
The gameplay loop is non-existent. The focus is on the avatars of your character, not the pets. The avatar system is pretty, but very overtly feminine and childlike, and the layering is wonky and limited.
For me, I felt like I could make one outfit and then that was it, because anything else I tried was wrong.
The NPCs are endearing but they are shallow, and the end of the quest for the last currently open town (ocean) was very troubling morality-wise but they are currently (apprently?) rewriting that section.
The staff is also very horrible with transparency, and the only things to come out recently have been cash shop additions and little else.

dragon cave comes to mind!! while your eggs/hatchlings die after a week if they don't hatch/grow up, you can always send them to click sites so they don't :D
i play it every now and then and it's pretty fun!! there's not a lot you can do besides take care of dragons, but new releases and their holiday events are pretty interesting!! there's also no limit to how many you can have -- i have about 730 dragons and counting!
edit: fixed some typos... whoops ^^;

Ahem.
Pokefarm Q?
I mean, I don't play it too often anymore, but it still exists.
[/quote]
Oh god I forgot about that. There's also Pokedexhex or whatever it was called that was also very similar but different

To be honest I don't know if there's anything quite like FR out there, even in the petsim world. I've tried a lot of different games, and I've abandoned every single one besides FR. Not that they're bad, but they just aren't what I want.
Pixpet is more about colleting pets. Think Pokemon.
Lioden is more serious, I guess I'd say? I feel like there are more petsims in this vein, where they try to be more accurate to real life, but it's not really appealing to me. A lot of games like this punish you for not checking the site every day and at least in Lioden's case, your lions will age and die eventually.
Dappervolk puts more emphasis on the story and customizing your player character. The art is very beautiful, but the concept didn't appeal to me because I don't want to play a humanoid character, if I'm playing a petsim I want the focus to be on the pets.
What I like about FR is that the pets are very customizable... Each dragon is like a tiny piece of art, and you can portray a lot of different things through the breeds, genes, colors (and in the case of modern breeds, apparel) available, which is something that feels really limited in other games.
They also don't die, so you can put as much time and effort into getting the exact pet you want without worrying that the proof of your effort will be snatched away from you.

i believe that you believe there is a heaven
where you belong.

Neopets does, in fact, still exist, and it's got one of the most robust pet customization systems I've seen anywhere. No breeding mechanic, but it's honestly pretty great with petpages and the available creative opportunities. The games are still in progress being Deflashed, but the rest of the site's functional and virtually unchanged except better on mobile and you can be gay now.

Wouldn't recc Lioden or Wolvden actually, because they aren't like FR at all. They only share the fact they're customizable animals. It has a death mechanic which is unavoidable and does make things a lot more high stress imo unlike the very relaxed nature of FR. WD especially is hard to grind for currency in in order to actually customize wolves outside of a lot of RNG breeding and buying from others.
Pokefarm is nice though! I play that, and it def feels pretty similar.

In terms of breeding/genetics, the closest two that come to mind are Felisfire and PonyIsland.

Honestly, Flight Rising is a WAY out of everyones league regarding games
But the ones i play are:
- Dragon Cave
- Pixpet (still VERY new, from the makers of "Dragon Adopters" if you remember that oldie of a game)

Legit?? I am NOT a petsim person. I never liked or played petsims. And I adore FR. It's just special. :>

Could you elaborate on PonyIsland?
I am looking for a horse (hopefully with fantasy horses as well as normal) that does NOT have competitions, every single horse sim I have found always is really more focused on competeing the horses, and the horses also age and die.

I'm surprised MagiStream hasn't been mentioned. No death for the creatures you collect, there's tons of them and you can have as many as you wish, quite a good deal of them can breed and even create hybrids, and there are quests to do. Also, the lore is pretty great, to me at least.

I refuse...
