Hi this is my thousandth post and I had an idea. All the fr breeds have pretty unique names. I decided to rate them based on how much I personally like them. Feel free to do the same in this thread. ^^ Or if you wanna be more simple just feel free to share your favorite and/or least favorite breed names.
Yes I'm taking this too seriously, but I thought it'd be fun. Most of these are based off how cool the word is to me or how much I think it fits the dragons in question.
All opinion and subjective folks!
Banescale- 5.5/10 Honestly the lore on banes really doesn't say much about their personalities beyond them being kinda lost in the world, and frankly? Bane is a word for great suffering or distress. I don't know that their canon lore really suits that. Scale is perfect though as they are one of few breeds with actual visible individual scales lol. It sounds super cool as a word tho.
Bogsneak- 8/10 I really like this one. It's unique, and while it does follow the format of the two word breed names, it hits different, idk why. And it's perfect for them according to their lore. Damp habitats? Bog. Elusive and clever? Sneak. It doesn't roll off the tongue like banescale, but honestly it's cute. I like it.
Coatl- 6/10 A little above average imo. I absolutely adore the connection to Aztec mythology, but as Quetzalcoatl is the deity of wind, air, and learning, I don't know that the humming fire breed was the best choice for the title. I understand they're serpentine but like. So are spirals, the wind breed. (Yes I know the deity was a feathered serpent that's why I gave the name a 6 lol) I also had no idea how to say it when I first joined but that one is on me.
Fae- 9/10 Okay call me biased cause faes were my first dragon. But it's perfect? They're small, they're magic, they're arcane. Next question. But no really, it's very simple and straightforward and out of all the breeds, they are the closest to fae creatures, specifically certain incarnations of pixies, out of all the breeds. Fae come in all shapes and sizes, but are most commonly associated with small cute fluttery critters, which a fae is absolutely.
Gaoler- 4.5/10 Look every time I see this my dumb baby brain says 'gowler' and that will never not be the case. But I still kinda like it? If I could make the connection and see it as 'jailer' every time, it would get a higher score. I know the origin of gaol as jail and all, but it just doesn't do it for me. Besides, jailer? It doesn't leave much room in their lore for varieties of dragons.
Guardian- 7/10 Not the most unique name, but very suited to their lore, and how they find something that calls on them to protect and watch over it. They're described as protective front line fighters. And if that doesn't scream the word guardian, idk what does. Another really simple name, but all of the starter breeds are like that, so I can't fault one and not the others.
Imperial- 5/10 It's a really cool word and I wish I could love it for them more. But imperial is a word relating to empires. And when I think of the regions of Sornieth, I don't exactly think of an empire. Since all the nations are divided and ruled by their single deity, and Light isn't made up of a bunch of countries/regions. No more than the other regions are. So in my opinion, it just doesn't fit. It's a beautiful, regal word that just doesn't really describe the dragon.
Mirror- 3/10 Oh, mirrors my beloved plague species. I love plague. To death. But the only way the word mirror would really suit these dragons is if they had kept all the extra features they'd had before instead of just their eyes. It's a cool reference to a beta design, but the thing is that they don't have it anymore. Leads me to wonder how breeds are named in the canon lore? Mirror also just isn't a super neat or fun-to-say word in my opinion.
Nocturne- 10/10 Ironically my least favorite breed and the first to get a perfect rating. The females are neat-looking but I just can't love the males idk. Anyway. The name. Nocturne. It rolls off the tongue perfectly. And the reference to nocturnal is just perfect for shadow dragons. Though if any dragon were to be called mirrors, it might make sense for the mimicking dragons over here but I digress. I love the word nocturne it's so cool.
Obelisk- 4/10 Please don't come for me obelisk lovers, they're really cool dragons. I know an obelisk is a monument, but like. If you look at one they're very tall and slender. Obelisks are very big and bulky dragons. Fun word to say but again, I don't know that it's the best word for these floofy lion friends.
Pearlcatcher- 8/10 A bit on the nose, but it works? I don't know that these guys could have gotten away with a name that didn't have pearl in it. It's basically their entire personality. Anyway, as for the catcher part, it sounds a lot better than any other word that would have made sense there. Pearlholder? Pearlbearer? Pearlkeeper? Pearlkeeper isn't awful I guess but I don't like the way it looks. Catcher just seems to suit them even if they acquire the thing almost immediately.
Ridgeback- 4/10 I can't bring myself to love this name just because I associate with something else. If you know you know. And that something else is linked to someone who kindaaaaaa sucks. So for me, I just have a negative association with the word as a whole. Nothin against ridgies themselves just me and my dumb highly associative ADHD brain lol. Other than that, the name seems to fit decently well. They got sharp spikes on their backs. Perfect.
Skydancer- 10/10 Call me a perpetuator of favoritism all you like I love this name, I love this breed. Skydancers are great. The name suits them very well, in my opinion. As a feathery wind breed, they need some reference to the sky and they got it. And the fact that in their lore they are literally dancers, this is just about the best name for them? It's pretty and elegant and not overly complicated, just like the breed itself. I love it.
Snapper- 8/10 The main draw for me for this one is the fact that snappers' faces look just like snapping turtles. It's perfect. The animal I'd associate most with earth would be turtles because of stuff like the lion turtle from avatar and that weird mountain turtle from the neverending story. And torterra from pokemon. So just a lot of earth goin on here and snapping turtles are cute. Snapper is a great name for these chonky fellas.
Spiral- 6/10 Um, this is accurate? But one thing I've never understood about these guys is how they move? Like are they always spiraling around or what I dunno it's weird to think about. But in their respective poses? This is a great name for them because they literally are spirals. Not the most out there choice but the name is easy and kinda fun to say.
Tundra- 7/10 Very accurate again. And much like the other starter breeds a very simple and straightforward name. It screams floofy ice baby. And that's exactly what you get when you sign up for one of these bois. I don't really like tundras but this is a great name for an artic fluffle monster.
Veilspun- 7/10 It sounds really cool but I don't know what it meaannsss. They have manes that kinda look like veils? But where did the spun come from? What are they spinning??? They beat their wings to hypnotize but not spin them. I honestly just gave it a nice score because I love them and I think the name is properly spooky for a shadow dragon.
Wildclaw- 10/10 They're nature dragons of course they're wild. It's perfect. And the claw is their noticeable feature. It's a great name for really cool raptor dragons and I live for it. I don't have much more to say about this one but it's just a really good name.
I'm very tired and ready to hear opinions of everybody else. If there was a thumbs up emoji I'd put it here. -->
