They stared back, expectant. A few among their number were rustling their wings impatiently. “Well?” demanded the clan head, who had just a minute ago claimed she was only attending out of scholarly interest. He had come here intending to put the fear of the Tangled Wood into these aloof Light-lovers, but he hadn’t expected this. He wanted to mimic her tone back at her, because that was what a Nocturne did, but she was a Skydancer and wouldn’t understand. Instead he shuffled his wing-claws on the ground and admitted “I…well. This story’s about Veilspun. Is that a problem?” It hadn’t been a problem last year. But this year, there was a tiny insect-winged dragon among his audience. This was the first clan he’d visited who had taken in one of these secretive ancients, and he wasn’t sure what to do. The Veilspun didn’t seem bothered, though. She smiled thinly, showing the points of her exceedingly tiny teeth, and said, “Not at all.” There was something terribly knowing about her eyes, as if she already knew by heart the story he had come to tell. And maybe she did. She wasn’t a hatchling, after all. She might well have emerged from the depths of the same forest as his clan’s oldest tale. Unsettled, he attempted to settle back into the storyteller’s rhythm. It was a good story. It deserved his best effort. He exhaled, shifted his voice down-pitch to pretend at being a much larger dragon, and began to speak. “Gather around, Light-clan, for the cold is coming, and the sun is turning away, and in the long shadows of the longest nights there shall awaken things that mortal dragons will never understand…” The story of Siva in the winter-court of the Veilspun was an old one, and a beautiful one, and all his life he had anticipated the time of year when the days would grow shorter and he could hear it told again. Now, as an adult, it was his duty to tell it. So he spun the words into the air, affecting voices that were not his own as only a Nocturne could, and told the tale of how a mortal dragon had fallen in love with a wisp-queen. At its end, a few hatchlings crowded around the Veilspun who had listened attentively throughout the whole telling, motionless except for the occasional flutter of her wings. “Is it true, Navati?” asked the littlest one, and Keva went still with shock. “Did the Veilspun queen really keep Siva with her forever?” Shaken, Keva stared at the tiny dragon who he suddenly realised matched the ancestral descriptions perfectly. She had the same nightshade gleam, the same glittering wings, the same pale-Shadow eyes. He hadn’t mentioned the name even once. That name wasn’t for outsiders to know. But this dragon… Navati smiled in the thin, enigmatic way that he thought a wisp-queen might. “Perhaps,” she said, and nothing more. “Perhaps.” [/columns] Fire's Tale for Saturday! lQ3vvxT.png Keva beheld the assembled group of dragons uncertainly.

Is that a problem?”

It hadn’t been a problem last year.

“Gather around, Light-clan, for the cold is coming, and the sun is turning away, and in the long shadows of the longest nights there shall awaken things that mortal dragons will never understand…”

The story of Siva in the winter-court of the Veilspun was an old one, and a beautiful one, and all his life he had anticipated the time of year when the days would grow shorter and he could hear it told again.

“Did the Veilspun queen really keep Siva with her forever?”

Shaken, Keva stared at the tiny dragon who he suddenly realised matched the ancestral descriptions perfectly. She had the same nightshade gleam, the same glittering wings, the same pale-Shadow eyes.

He hadn’t mentioned the name even once. That name wasn’t for outsiders to know. But this dragon…

Navati smiled in the thin, enigmatic way that he thought a wisp-queen might.

“Perhaps,” she said, and nothing more. “Perhaps.”

A glowing skydancer, filled with the energy of the Lightweaver, curls up around a small blue nocturne. “Tell me another story, ‘Kari,” he begs, pressing against her warm chest. Hikari smiles. “Alright Moonlight, I’ll tell you a story.” She hums softly, taking a deep breath and wrapping her wings around the hatchling. “Once upon a time, when the deities still roamed the world, and fire could only be found in the highest parts of the Ashfall Waste, there was a beautiful Banescale princess named Hia, who lived in a Fire clan not far from the sea. Her scales were the color of rubies and her eyes glowed as if they were pure amber. One day, from across the sea, she spotted a beautiful Imperial whose scales shone with the essence of the sun. Every morning Hia would send a gift across the ocean to the Imperial, and in return he would send back priceless gemstones. As time passed, however, the princess grew weary of only seeing the Imperial from across the sea. Thus, she attempted to fly over the waters to meet him. Unfortunately, the wind and waves proved to be too strong for her and she was brought crashing down into the ocean. The Lightweaver saw this and took pity on Hia, scattering her scales across the continent. They burned as they fell. When they landed, each scale burst into brilliant flames, bringing fire and warmth to the realms outside of the Ashfall Waste. Night falls across Sornieth, the gentle glow of campfires lighting up caves across the Hewn City and beyond.

The other dragons of Sornieth couldn’t believe what they were seeing, that something so warm and comforting could exist outside of the fiery depths of the Flamecaller’s domain. A few of the scales hit dragons of Fire descent, and they were given the power to create and share fire with the world.”

Hikari finishes her story and looks down at the young nocturne, who had fallen asleep in her arms. “Good night little one,” she whispers, and settles down to sleep herself. The heat of the fire beats gently at her, the remnants of glittering ruby scales flickering into the night.

His pearl sling and rucksack thumped against his chest as he pulled to a stop in the snow, ears twisting to catch the tinkling laughter he could have sworn he heard from among the trunks of the ancient redwoods. He also remembered his beloved telling him that there were ancient creatures in the shadowed woodlands that would deceive you, try to draw you from the relative safety of the worn footpaths and into their lair. The woods are lovely, dark and deep. They were lovely, and he was tired, the bitter cold of winter burrowing deep into his very bones. But perhaps there was some shelter among the underbrush, away from the biting cold and blustering snow. Among his friends who laughed and sang and danced the frigid nights away between the trunks and the gnarled thorns. Surely his beloved would care little if he took one night longer to reach them, let him rest his weary bones before pressing on...Yes, just a short rest, the woods were lovely, dark and deep, inviting, cajoling… He shook his head, snorted steam, pressed his ears back flat to his skull against the silver bell laughter of the things in the woods. He squeezed his eyes shut, focused on his beloved’s face; thick and soft mane, kind purple eyes, warm muzzle that pressed against his and knew him by scent as “friend” and then “the one that I love”. The one that loved him, the one that he loved, was waiting for him. Hidden away in a warm den, in the soft blue glow of giant mushrooms and pilfered sacridite shards. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, and they would not hold Sunheart here any longer. He had an important delivery to make, a gift for the one he loved most dearly. A pearl of their very own, painstakingly crafted from the finest gemstones and a little magic to look like his own, a symbol of their bond. The laughter faded as he trudged onward, snowbound woodland giving way to snow covered marshes, and beyond that his beloved, waiting for him. Sunheart recalled the poem again, letting it guide him away home. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep. Dragons had taken their places around him on all sides as he prepared to read by the light of many glowing crystals, so Silo began. “It is written that in the days after the Shade's defeat and the sundering of the Pillar that all manner of Dragon walked the surface of Sornieth, both those that had been blessed by the 11, and those that had formed in the godless days before.” Silo slowly spun the tale that countless Elders had read before him, diving into the tales of heroes with true appreciation of the trials their forefathers had faced in those early days. Not as old as the sky, no, not as old as the forest, but old enough that even the most reticent of the trees knew him as a companion. He was so old, he didn’t even remember how he died. Yes, this ancient dragon was a ghost. And yes, little one, a ghost can forget how he died. When you’ve been around so long, all the time blends together, and events like that don’t seem so important anymore. In the same forest, there was another dragon, much like you. She was very young and very small, but very brave as well. She longed to explore the forest and befriend the trees, but her parents told her that she was still just a hatchling and the forest was too dangerous for her. As the days grew shorter and the snow began to fall, the little dragon asked her parents if she was old enough to explore yet. They told her the cold winds would blow her out of the sky and she’d get lost in the snow. She could explore in the spring, they said, if she took a grown-up dragon with her. The little dragon was impatient. She did not want to wait for spring. She wanted to taste the snow and feel the sun’s cold light. So, one cold night, she snuck out of the lair, away from her family, and into the forest. Not long after she left, a blizzard came. The little dragon tried to fly back home, but the winds were too strong, and blew her away. She landed in a grove of trees which protected her from the worst of the wind, but it did not stop the bitter cold. She tried to keep a brave face, but she was very cold, very scared, and very far from home. Slowly, the snow began to build up around her and the spark of bravery in her heart began to dim. She called for help, but the wind carried her voice away. Out in the storm, the ancient dragon was flying too, and he heard her voice. At first, he didn’t listen - he didn’t pay much attention to the regular dragons of the forest - but her voice made him remember something. He flew down to see her and say hello. She jumped, surprised by the sudden voice and gust of wind, but she held fast to her remaining courage and greeted the ghost dragon. She told him she was lost and did not know how to get home, and he told her a story much like the one I’m telling you. His story was as ancient as he was, about another little dragon lost in the winter woods. He, however, was not met by a ghost as the snow built up around him, and when he finally fell asleep, he woke up and left his body behind. The old dragon was happy with his death, but he did not want the little dragon to be lost the same way. He called up a warm and friendly wind, and led her all the way back home. She thanked him, and promised to remember the old dragon who had saved her, while he promised not to let any more little dragons get lost in the snow. And so, little one, we remember the lost, as the days grow short and the snow begins to fall. MyzsNoj.png There was a dragon, once, who was very old.

Sit a spell in the light, at least, for it's long before the dawn and getting longer by the day. Oh, but that brings back memories! No, not my own, you hooligans; I'm still a little less old than dirt. But it was on a night such as this--deep in the dregs of the year, with the wind howling like a lost hainu--that a young Snapper named Midas brought fire to our darkest night. This was long ago, when the Sunbeam Ruins had fewer cracks in the foundations and the homemakers of the Ashfall Wastes had slightly less dusting to do. The great Beacon illuminated the eastern shores, but where the redwoods loomed to the north, the coasts were chancy after dark but for a few brave lighthouses like our own. When the storm first blew in, no one worried. The sea will do what the sea will do; you take what luck it blows you, even if it blows you over. We battened down our homes and waited for it to pass. Only it didn't. Not for days. When we saw the lighthouse flame had gone out, no one knew quite what to do. Our lighthouse keeper wouldn't have left his post; a Fae like him would have been blown clear to Dragonhome. Nor could the village leave the lighthouse to chance. there might be ships in the strait or Guardians in the gulf, desperate for sight of land. But no one could fly in that weather, either; you'd break your wings the moment you tried. When no one else volunteered, Midas cleared his throat. "I'll go," he said. "I'm sturdy and strong, and used to walking; my wings won't catch the wind, small as they are." With no lantern to guide him, Midas stepped out bravely into the dark, armed only with his warmest scarf and a small, mottled egg he tucked away in its folds. Though the wind buffeted him, his stout legs never stumbled; on he strode, until at last he reached the sea. Back then there was no stone arch spanning the channel to the lighthouse island. There was only a rope bridge, so narrow it strained around his sides almost to bursting. He almost turned back at the first ominous creak of twine, but the little egg tucked against his neck burned just that little bit hotter, giving him strength. The lighthouse keeper, out of fuel, was dismayed to find him empty-handed, but Midas nudged his little egg into the hollow of the firebowl. Cushioned in ash, his dearest friend hatched anew, lighting the great mirrors with phoenix-fire through the night. Since then our lighthouses have always been kept by phoenix-friends, and no one minds the size of your wings so long as you've courage beneath them.
