I think just because of the hair that veils fit so well into ancients. Think of all the apparel that would have to be clipped, hidden, or badly layered with all that hair!

I can't 100% verify the truth of this, but I've heard Veilspun fit the "modern mold" because the devs would feel bad if a Super Cool Rule-Breaking Dragon With Five Heads And No Wings was locked behind a 1000g paywall.
I don't understand what does "paywall" mean in this situation. Doesn't make sense to me. The products are not locked. Anyone can purchase them at any time. There are unlimited quantities of them as well. It doesn't matter whether they are in Treasure Matketplace or Gem Marketplace. They are products which cost money, naturally.

I've seen way too many players that seem to think you can't get gem items without buying them with irl money. There was a noticeable stink over veils being a "cash grab" by making them a gem breed (as if FR isn't run by real humans who need real money to pay real bills and buy real food). Even among those who fully understand you can make gems in-game, there are those who find gem items too expensive.

I’m not here to argue about Veilspun prices. That discussion is old and tired. I personally think that 1000g isn’t all that much. I think the Veilspun price as it is right now is fine. However, the reason I mentioned a “paywall” is that it is generally more difficult to obtain gems than treasure. Otherwise it wouldn’t be considered a premium currency. Staff recognize this. It’s why they didn’t make this ancient a Nature breed because WCs already cost 2000g, not to mention the whole cycling thing. They probably would’ve done the same for Fire had they not already gotten banes.
(Admittedly, “locked” was poor word choice. I’m going to blame it on my brain at 4am)
I wish people (in general, not necessarily you specifically) would stop putting each other down over this issue. It’s not hard to recognize, simultaneously, that gems aren’t that hard to obtain but they are still more difficult to get than treasure (usually), and that may be an influential factor for some people depending on how much time they have available to play this game.

@EiraoLaska No worries! It was probably my bad for detecting a bit of dismissiveness in the replies to my post.
I also didn’t mean to come off as confrontational and if I did, I apologize. I was mostly just trying to defend my use of the word “paywall”. Looking back, my reply was also more so in response to Henry and quoting your reply was probably unnecessary.
REGARDLESS, in an attempt to stay even remotely on the topic of this thread, I do think that the Veilspun are worthy of their “ancient” title. Like others have pointed out already, they do have a lot of distinguishing features, like their hair and strange wing structure, that would make it pretty difficult for them to be a modern breed. If staff makes more of these “rule-following” ancients then I do at least hope they continue incorporating interesting/strange anatomical features that distinguish them from moderns. I think a really, really long tail, giant floppy ears, or fins would be super fun to have on an otherwise rule-following ancient

That is all good! I misunderstood here, I believe. I got confused about the "locked" and "paywall" words. That is one me and was only talking as the website's point of view as it doesn't have "locked" thing going on. Both sides of the shops are accessible for all players. I didn't mean to offense anyone or any type of players! My apologies!
Besides, as other people pointed out, there's the line-breaking terts and apparel-unfriendly body proportions. Gaolers have crazier fur than Tundras, plus absolutely tiny wings. Veilspuns have completely non-standard wings and wild, long manes. They would have to be changed in order to be of modern-standard, and I would absolutely hate that.
Basically this. Sure, they don't have multiple heads (or no head, like the new scene ;P) or missing or extra arms, but I do feel they are non standard enough to fit the "ancient" criteria. Plus, I'd like to add that some of the ancients have special terts that would be line breaking, such as Veil's beetle, bane's wraith, and gaoler's shardflank. I think them being ancients gives them more interesting tert genes!
So, I have no issue with them being ancients. :)

i think the main thing is really that they pushed a gem ancient so soon
like, saving the crazy stuff for treasure mp and baldwin? great!!! i applaud them for that!! but because we got a gem ancient so soon it feels kind of disappointing? we probably should have had at least one more not-dragon before we got a gem dragon. i mean, the pace of ancient releases is extremely slow. the last ancient we got was literally like a year ago, right (knowing that covid exists now)? and how long are some elements going to have to wait for their ancient? i'm not saying everything should be faster, but you see how long it's taking to get to the goodies. not that gaolers and veils aren't goodies, but they're still just dragons. i personally am not excited about "new dragon breed!1!" as much as i am about new species, aka drakes! lindwurms!! seeing things that aren't just dragons with Big Hair and hey the wings are weird! we got two of those! like i know ancients aren't necessarily about making not-dragons, but it's our only opportunity for it and we already have so many dragons idk man
of course none of us are staff so we don't know whether or not they capital n Needed to throw out an entire breed to increase gem sales for food on the table and happy servers (which they would have been planning for over a year), but just from our puny perspective they could have waited y'know?
anyway, i await the next ancient! i hope it's gigantic and scary

Pretty sure they worked on what people were asking for the most first. Users wanted more robust mammalian-like dragons, so we got Gaolers. Then users begged and begged for Wyverns so we got Banescales next. Users have been begging for bug-like dragons after that, so now we have Veilspuns. We will probably get something with more limbs/heads next.
You have to take into account how long it takes to make a new breed, even ancients. They could have been working on some of the designs for a really long time. Maybe even alongside some of the original modern breed designs. They might just have selected to work on the simpler designs first. In any case, we are sure to see some more wild designs in the future!

I think it was a mistake to have 2/3 of the ancients follow the conventional body plan.

I suppose 4 legs/2 wings/1 tail/1 head is a fairly easy template to deal with, especially when it comes to gene design. Every ancient so far has its own unique genes as well as modified versions of existing genes.
If we had a dragon with only two forelegs and a head, where would the secondary gene go, for example? What would some genes look like on a dragon with only two legs? Or none at all, like a three-headed snakey hydra? How would Okapi look on that, for example? Go up the necks?

Hey, friendly reminder to drink water, stretch, and take a short break if you can. Stay healthy! Also, don't forget about any chores or tasks you might be putting off.

Plus, they also have unique outline-breaking genes which no Modern will ever have, so there's that.
