honestly, yeah dhgejskahah
I always confuse people with the same avatar too
Part of the reason why my avatar is p e r m a n e n t
Edit: have you ever thought.. that on the internet, you could effectively disappear from people's memories by erasing your friend list, changing your username, avatar and sig?
Completely new player out of a sudden. Boom.

I remember people by their usernames mostly, but if I'm scrolling through the forums and not looking at their name or avatar, I'll recognize them by their signatures.
I do, however, have a horrendous memory... So unless it is something I see repetitively, then it really doesn't stick. With the exception of very unique names or signatures.

i only recognize usernames if i've seen them around like a lot
otherwise signatures are p much the only way i identify people. completely change your sig and i no longer have any idea who you are
I thankfully tend to be alright at remembering the usernames of those I directly interact with - but people who maintain a consistent avvie/vista combo are much easier to spot and remember on a casual basis. I used to keep the same avatar years ago for precisely this reason, but it's just too much fun switching it up. Signatures are a good compromise, I should make one.

Iokharic You may want to look into faceblindness/prosopagnosia if you haven't already - especially re the 'out of context' stuff. Feel free to msg if you want some links.)

I dunno if it's face blindness...my mom has the same problem. Mostly I'm just bad with names.

Hey, friendly reminder to drink water, stretch, and take a short break if you can. Stay healthy! Also, don't forget about any chores or tasks you might be putting off.
Avies and siggies are a god send on the forums

I tend to remember people by their usernames, which works out fine most of the time. There have been a few times though where users I see frequently have seemingly gone on hiatus, only for me to run across someone with an avatar that looks very similar to the missing user.
Who knows how many times I haven't caught it, but there are lots of heavy sighs whenever I do end up realizing that it's literally the exact same dragon. The user didn't quit, they just changed their UN.

Iokharic It might be, and might not! I mention it because what you said reminded me of my own experience. I used to think I was just bad with names and wasn't sure why I struggled with them so much despite having a pretty solid memory otherwise. Discovering that face blindness has different levels of severity - particularly milder versions where one is usually quite alright at recognising people but can get tripped up in certain situations - explained a whole lot!
That being said, being bad with names is way more common than prosopagnosia. It was more the haircut and context comment that made me mention it, as neither of those have much to do with names and are things I struggle with too. Your mum having the same issue is also a point to checking it out - prosopagnosia can be inherited.
Even if it doesn't count in your case, I think it's worth mentioning for anyone else who might be browsing this thread and wondering a similar thing.

I remember a couple people by name if I see them often enough but I usually go by avatar ^^”

not sure why anyone would particularly want to remember me but you're welcome. i have the same problem but it's for all possible pleasant memory. i remember awful things and anything i don't want to remember forever, but anything that makes me happy or even neutral my brain instantly erases forever and it feels very on purpose. like it actively hates me being even capable of thinking about anything that isn't uncomfortable and unwanted. it forces me to have obsessions with the worst thingsit can find. my adhd is literally sentient and wants me to only ever think and care about things that make me cringe.
