It was a peaceful day in the forest. Birds chirping, critters scurrying, bigger animals lumbering through. An occasional flurry of noise with brief disputes about territory or mating partners, but nothing severe, nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing to prepare the denizens of the forest for what was to come.

A wailing cry rings through the trees. Crashing, scratching, howling noises silence those former sounds of normalcy.

All fights over space are forgotten as creatures flee, terrified, united in seeking safety from whatever roaring animal is causing these new, pained screeches to rip through their eardrums.

More crashes resound, the beasts flying, running, slithering, using whatever modes of transport available to them, the panic adding to the cacophony.

One especially brave harpy circles back, flying high to scout the dangerous new inhabitant of the forest. To see what in the 11 deities' names could have such a terrible roar, could thunder so loudly, could elicit such pained cries from its victims.

Descending upon two little dragons banging and crashing and howling and making every noise they possibly could, in an attempt to “out-music” the other.

The clearing wasn’t the largest, and it was more than a little filled with dragons at the moment- hatchlings like themselves from their classes, and older, grown dragons of many breeds all busy working at their masterpieces. “I’m not sure I did this right….” Juniper looked down at the creation before her, head tilted to the side as she took in her work. A small mountain of clay rested on the ground before her, a hole carefully dug out from it’s center. All in all, given her age it wasn’t a terrible looking pinch pot -if a bit large… though there were a number of flower petals and stems sticking out of it here and there at awkward angles. Eos glanced up from her own project when her friend spoke, giving the pot a quick once over before replying. “I think… you added the flowers too early.” “But I wanted a pot with flowers on it!” “You’re supposed to paint them on after…” The nocturne blinked a few times before looking down at her pot again and making a face. “...Oops.” Eos let out a soft giggle and smiled at her friend before poking a claw lightly at the pottery in question. “It’s okay Juni, now there’s just gonna be twice as many flowers!” Perking up at the comment, Juniper gave the golden coatl a big smile before bouncing a little in her seat. “And momma loves flowers!” She exclaimed, quickly reaching for a bit more clay to attach yet another daisy to her pot with. “An’ I bet she’s gonna love your pot too! Maybe even more!” She wasn’t always the best when it came to crafty things, but that didn't matter much- Eos was a really good artist in her opinion, and the feathered dragon always had the best advice. With her help, they’d make the best presents for the Gladekeeper for sure. A splattering of daffodils gave her an idea, though. Plucking one, she held it up for Eos to see. “Sunrise over the Big Tree?” Eos let out a happy chirp and checked several of her bags. “I think I have the colors for that! Just need the daffodils for the sun~” she trilled. “I’mma start makin’ paints!” The two hatchlings made the paints one at a time as Eos painted her picture on a large piece of parchment, working from the bottom up. By the time she had gotten around to painting the sky, Eos saw there was no yellow paint, only two daffodils. She tilted her head, certain she had seen a bigger pile of daffodils laying next to the blue parrot tulips, but maybe she was wrong? Shrugging it off, Eos continued to paint, but when she reached for the tulips to make blue paint, she found most of them were gone. Gaping, she turned to Juniper, only to find her friend’s mouth full of tulips! The coatl’s laughter filled the space among the muffled words of her friend. “Juni! You’re supposed to make paint with the flowers, not eat them!” [nextcol]
[/columns] Tuesday's Lore by EasilyAmusedKat Much thanks to Nature's lore writers: Amburgerl, benjoey, EasilyAmusedKat, and splatterdoodle. Nobody’s better at food than me!” “Juni, just because you ate all the flowers yesterday, doesn’t mean you’re ‘good at food’; this is a cooking competition, not an eating competition.” “Being better at eating just means I know what foods taste better, hmph. But why do we need to cook? Flowers are so good as is!” Eos couldn’t help but nod. Not only did flowers and berries taste very good indeed, but they weren’t allowed near the oven unsupervised. Maybe they should rethink the challenge... But... “SALADS,” Juni blurted out, as if reading Eos’s mind. ”We should make salads!” So the two dragons went to work, as much as frolicking through the forest picking leaves and fruits and nuts can be considered work. “Figs and Paradise seeds? Are you KIDDING me?? Clearly myosotis is the better choice!!!” Eos was favoring nuts and seeds in her foraging, while Juniper was, of course, seeking out flowers. The two things they could agree on was wanting to play with the newly discovered ‘blue berries’, and that edamame was yucky. “Acorn!” “Lace Lantana” “Luminous almonds!!” “Manaweed!!” “SUNKERNEL~” “THISTLE!” Before long, there was a third thing they agreed on: they were both too stuffed from snacking to battle anymore today. Flowers?” “Nope! ...I mean, yes, obviously there will be flowers, but that’s not the point.” Eos, now curious, peered inside the satchel and let out a delighted squeal. “GLITTER!! Oh, Juni, how did you get so much??” “Pipp!! Also, now we owe her, like, a bazillion bundles of jungle grass now - but we can gather that after I beat you at card-making” “Nuh-uh, my card is gonna be sooooo much better; Momma is gonna love it so much,” The arguing faded into creativity as they pulled out their paper and set to work, making little love notes for their Momma. Drawing little hearts, sticking on glitter. Writing adoring messages and sticking on glitter. Cutting little designs into the edges and sticking on glitter. Sticking on flowers and sticking on glitter. Covering up the messages with glitter. Gluing glitter on the little hearts. Gluing glitter on glitter. Layering glue on glitter on glue on glitter on glue on glitter... Each ‘card’ slowly becoming a sopping pile of glue and glitter and giggles, each hatchie’s hands shining like disco balls, eager to share their labor with their Momma. They would show the Fire Flight who’s best.

It was time to try and get the Gladekeeper’s blessing…

“Okay, I am definitely better at this one! Nobody’s better at food than me!”

“Juni, just because you ate all the flowers yesterday, doesn’t mean you’re ‘good at food’; this is a cooking competition, not an eating competition.”

“Being better at eating just means I know what foods taste better, hmph. But why do we need to cook? Flowers are so good as is!”

Eos couldn’t help but nod. Not only did flowers and berries taste very good indeed, but they weren’t allowed near the oven unsupervised. Maybe they should rethink the challenge... But...

“SALADS,” Juni blurted out, as if reading Eos’s mind. ”We should make salads!”

So the two dragons went to work, as much as frolicking through the forest picking leaves and fruits and nuts can be considered work.

“Figs and Paradise seeds? Are you KIDDING me?? Clearly myosotis is the better choice!!!”

Eos was favoring nuts and seeds in her foraging, while Juniper was, of course, seeking out flowers. The two things they could agree on was wanting to play with the newly discovered ‘blue berries’, and that edamame was yucky.

“Acorn!”

“Lace Lantana”

“Luminous almonds!!”

“Manaweed!!”

“SUNKERNEL~”

“THISTLE!”

Before long, there was a third thing they agreed on: they were both too stuffed from snacking to battle anymore today.

“I know what we should decorate our cards with!!” Juni bounded up to Eos with a bulging satchel.

“Let me guess. Flowers?”

“Nope! ...I mean, yes, obviously there will be flowers, but that’s not the point.”

Eos, now curious, peered inside the satchel and let out a delighted squeal.

“GLITTER!! Oh, Juni, how did you get so much??”

“Pipp!! Also, now we owe her, like, a bazillion bundles of jungle grass now - but we can gather that after I beat you at card-making”

“Nuh-uh, my card is gonna be sooooo much better; Momma is gonna love it so much,”

The arguing faded into creativity as they pulled out their paper and set to work, making little love notes for their Momma.
