hey yall its your favorite topic of the day, HOW TO DRAW _______
this time we'll be going over pearlcatchers! the snootiest breedbecause glittermom doesnt regret them like she does imperials but also a pretty breed to draw on their own. lets get on with it, shall we?
This will be a big step if you haven't been following the previous topics. Here, we start with a circle for the head, a swooping neck, a circle for the eye, and a direction for the head! this is what we call "line of action" which is kind of a simplistic direction your drawing's pose is going to be in. for this pearlcatcher, his pose will be in a backwards S shape. His head will be pointing up cause he's snooty.
here i go over the eye shape i want to have. i'm going for a backwards >_> look, so his eyelids will be lowered. triangle shaped eyes are good for dragony peeps.
now we add the muzzle. like in the previous tutorial, how 2 draw skydance, we went over how the jaw works in relation to drawing the muzzle. since his mouth is closed here, we wont need to worry much about how the jaw looks other than the base, where i added a oval to flesh it out. he's a bit frowny.
here comes the facial expression! i added eyelids to push the snooty >_> look he's givin someone offscreen. now it REALLY looks like he's glaring. i also shortened the mouth line and directed the end of it downwards to push the grumpy grimace he's giving. a tip for expressions: PUSH IT! you can always tone it down later, but it'll be much more visually entertaining if you exaggerate. i also added the whiskers and nostrils. I actually dont know where pearlcatcher nostrils are. i think they're behind the whiskers. im just throwing things at the canvas at this point.
SOMETIMES EVENGOOD ARTISTS MAKE MISTAKES. I slimmed out the tip of the muzzle. the pearlcatcher's forehead flows pretty smoothly into the tip of the mouth, and i had previously had it bulge out. so i redrew it. i also got rid of a little hook at the end that shouldnt have been there either. I started the ear off with a circle (gotta love em) for the big fleshy area and then drew a fun wiggly triangle shape at the end. i'm very descriptive.
i finished up the ear by drawing the fleshy bits on the outside and uh words i don't know words just look what i drew its how ears work i don't know how words work! Add some FLUFF. I went over how to draw floof in the how 2 draw skydance tutorial previously, so if you need some tips, go check it out! also add a line for the underbelly.
the last details for our snooty friend here! give him 2 horns, one larger than the other (or one, if yours is a girl, or not, i dont care, smash the gender binary) and any other little details you might want to add, like wrinklies in the ear or underbelly scales. YEA!
LINE THAT BOY. use this time to add any other details you might have forgotten because you're a messy artist like me, like eyebrows and some more detail to the fluff. for the whiskers, i start them off with 2 lines, but they taper into 1 line, because i do not want to draw 2 lines side by side for however long they go because that's tedious and annoying and when you're an artist you can do whatever you want as long as it looks good.
one tip for lineart: avoid tangents! tangents are when two lines of two forms bump against each other and compete for which is in "front" of the other. a good example is the male fae's arm line that butts against the leg lines, creating a tangent. sometimes, tangents are hard to pick out because they don't look like tangents when you're zoomed in, but when you shrink it down, they seem to merge into one line. even experienced artists struggle with tangents, so dont be worried if you didnt realize this until now!
for instance, in my drawing, the cheek fluff butts up against the ear lines, but its not super important compared to say, something that is clearly supposed to be in front of another thing. TANGENTS! sometimes you have to redraw a huge amount just to avoid a tangent. shake your fist at them. CURSE YOU, TANGENTS, FOR MAKING MY WORK HARDER.
anyway, that's how to draw a pearlcatcher! C:
