Chapter 2. Clan Roles: Hierarchy and Personalities

So you've got a small collection of dragons. Now you need to string them together. Today’s focus is on your dragons themselves. If you have a large lair, start with five dragons, get those hashed out then add more one by one. For now though, focus on just five.

This chapter will be a two-parter. The next section will be focusing on jobs, so don’t worry about detailing that part just yet, but having an idea for general profession for each dragon is fine for now.

1. What social structure do you use? My clan itself is closest to a direct democracy. As the clan grows thought, that is becoming increasingly more unsustainable. There are beginning to be too many groups to keep happy. As a result, there have been calls to elect someone as an equivalent to a president. One of the clan's elders, Minerva , is the one everyone is asking. She has been quite resistant to it though.

Most of the smaller clans around my own are meritocratic. Many of the Centaur tribes are Oligarchies, usually run by the elders. Some are Theocratic and even militarily autocratic. The Serthis are completely based on brute force and violence though. Nobody is quite sure what what the Maren do and the Longneck are an Oligarchy revolving around the elders.

2. Head on over to a personality trait guide and give it a quick look. - I am going to get five dragons from an RNG and then find traits from the list that fit them.

Stargazer: Agreeable, Efficient, Teacherly, Determined, Placid, Patient, Caring, Elegant, Uncomplaining, Maternal,

Kenpachi: Athletic, Meticulous, Self-critical, Aggressive, Ascetic, Intense, Aloof, Angry, Disturbing, Grim.

Arghest: Courteous, Gentle, Stoic, Earthy, Stern, Asocial, Self-reliant, Rustic, Practical, Observant.

Longfellow: Articulate, Charismatic, Clean, Clever, Creative, Passionate, Shrewd, Questioning, Wishful, Educated.

Bacchus: Amiable, Brilliant, Idealistic, Hardworking, Humble, Loyal, Sociable, Wise, Absentminded, Mellow,

3. Okay, now that you’ve got a basic idea of personalities, how do these 5 dragons interact with each other? These dragons happen to barely if ever interact. Kenpachi is usually cloistered away in her Garden, Arghest is a wanderer, Stargazer is a teacher in the clan, Longfellow is a sailor, and Bacchus is a librarian. They may not have even met each other at any time. The two that are most likely to have met previously are Bacchus and Stargazer. Bacchus is one of the oldest members of the clan and so holds the title of Eld. Though not an official rank or anything, it is a name given to those in Centaur tribes to denote great wisdom. Generally, great age is also implied but not always. Stargazer is a spirit that has been forced to remain in this world, so she is much older than most dragons but lacks many of the same graces. Many clan members have fear for her or are actively hostile towards her. Bacchus is far more tolerant than many clan members though and treats her quite amicably. She has likely checked out books or brought her students to Bacchus's library before, so they probably know each other. In the court of public opinion though, Bacchus is likely higher ranked than Stargazer.

The others are unlikely to have interacted much.

In a ranking of most popular/trusted, from most to least.

Bacchus, Stargazer, Longfellow, Arghest, Kenpachi.

1. You have the basic of a personality down, now explore further. Find likes and dislikes for the following categories: Activities, Food, Objects/Presents from other dragons, personality traits in a mate.

Stargazer:

Likes reading, teaching, casting magic. She doesn't really need to, but she likes fruit, especially sour fruit. She doesn't really know why she loves her mate, it is like she always had and she knows nothing else.

Dislikes loud noises, spirit-binding, and bigots. She dislikes tubers greatly. She doesn't know why. At the very least, she dislikes those those without an open mind.

Kenpachi:

Likes... very little actually. She likes plants, gardening, and working (it helps occupy her thoughts.) She doesn't really care what she's eating too much. She loves that her mate wants to help her better herself no matter the cost. She dislikes herself, that her mate needs to possibly hurt himself to help her, and conflict (Though she greatly aches for it.)

Arghest:

Likes Rasa, sleeping, and herding. Arghest likes fried Quinoa with some mushroom. Dislikes hunters, Serthis, and ditch diggers. His primary preferences in a mate are that they probably be female and are smaller than him.

Longfellow:

Longfellow likes reading, painting, and thinking. He likes salted venison actually. Everyone else seems to abhor it. What he likes in a mate is, primarily, a specific male with an eye patch and a cavalier. He dislikes sand, spontaneous duties, and boiled shellbug.

Bacchus:

Likes magic, books, and writing. Bacchus likes clover and daffodil soup. Bacchus is a little old to be taking mates usually, but he likes a woman bigger and bolder than him. It makes him feel safe. He dislikes selfishness, blood, and fire.

2. What long term goals do they have in life?

Stargazer:

Stargazer wants to, for now teach and learn from her students and mate as well as her daughter, Weir. She hopes to someday return to her spirit realm.

Kenpachi:

Kenpachi wants to stay retired, garden, die, and then be at peace someday. Not particularly in that order. She has little to live for except her mate. She could outlive him by centuries, or he could outlive her. Imperial lifespans are erratic.

Arghest:

Arghest wants to keep raising his Rasa. He has no particular goal besides, "There's another hill to climb." One thing he does want to do is to find his way home someday.

Longfellow:

Longfellow wants to build up the courage he needs to come out to his captain about his feelings for him. He also wants a raise. Three coppers a day hopefully.

Bacchus:

Bacchus is getting very old and he is absolutely terrified of death. He is a skilled Alterer mage and he hopes to find some way to extend his life more than he already has. He has learned a few tricks from the local Necromancer, but it isn't permanent. He's still working on it.

3. What do they value the most?
Put this list of values in order of most important
: Family, Truth, Honor, Friendship, Money/Materials.

Stargazer:

Family, Friendship, Truth, Honour, Material Gain

Kenpachi:

Family, Honour, Truth, Friendship, Material Gain

Arghest:

Honour, Friendship, Material Gain, Family, Truth

Longfellow:

Family, Friendship, Truth, Material Gain, Honour

Bacchus:

Friends, Truth, Honour, Material Gain, Family

No, the series is "Lorebuilding 101" and covers the basics. We haven't covered all the basics. If I make a continuing series past what people build here in the basics, that'll be lorebuilding 102.

1. What social structure do you use? Is it a Monarchy? Oligarchy? Autocracy? Tribal System? A Commune?

I suppose it would be a monarchy or a feudal society, with the alpha/matriarch being the queen and her husband the king. The alpha family holds a lot of importance in the culture of the clan, which puts them in a position of a “royal family”, but they’re not formally royalty. They have advising groups that oversee and advise in areas the alpha isn’t familiar with, such as the Council of Eleven: a group of flight ambassadors highly skilled in their respective elemental magic.

2. Head on over to a personality trait guide and give it a quick look. Do any of these words stick to one of your dragons? Grab a few index cards and use one for each dragon. Write down traits you think would match.

Note: I will be adding every dragon in my lore over time. I'm starting with the alpha family.

3. Okay, now that you’ve got a basic idea of personalities, how do these 5 dragons interact with each other? Are they lovers? Friends? Rivals? Are they higher or lower rank on the social structure? Maybe they don’t like how the other one operates. Or they do like it. How do they show it? Are they likely to be sneaky about it or upfront?

1. You have the basic of a personality down, now explore further. Find likes and dislikes for the following categories: Activities, Food, Objects/Presents from other dragons, personality traits in a mate.

2. What long term goals do they have in life?

3. What do they value the most?
Put this list of values in order of most important: Family, Truth, Honor, Friendship, Money/Materials.

My clan is a Workplace

2. Personalities Overview:

Uncia:
+: Adaptable, Efficient, Generous
=: Businesslike, Moralistic, Progressive
-: Passive
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Delacouri:
+: Scholarly, Serious, Unfoolable
=: Preoccupied, Impassive, Placid
-: Asocial
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tarsk:
+: Perfectionist, Tasteful, Trusting
=: Artful, Outspoken, High-spirited
-: Well-meaning
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yoru:
+: Alert, Protective, Solid
=: Private, Stern, Formal
-: Calculating
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Carne:
+: Independent, Patient, Reliable
=: Impasive, Unsentimental, Stolid
-: Cynical
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3. Okay, now that you’ve got a basic idea of personalities, how do these 5 dragons interact with each other?
All of them work under Uncia with different jobs around the inn and all of them are thankful to work there since she gives them somewhere to live and go about their lives.
Yoru generally stays by himself in a small house built into a cavern outside the main Inn entrance and is visited often by Stellari. She is also the only dragon he interacts with on a regular basic.
Tarsk and Delacouri talk often as friends as well as Delacouri being Tarsk's fashion muse. Both dragons have a crush on the other but neither will admit to such feelings.
Carne is the Inn's butcher and the first resident Flesh Beast, next to Rosemary, who doesn't stick around for long periods of time. He mostly interacts with Akasha, the Inn's Hunter, since she brings him meats to butcher. They are also close friends as Akasha understands what he is and still treats him as just another old timer of a dragon.
Done all that basic stuff at the top? Well, here's some more stuff to work on.
1. You have the basic of a personality down, now explore further. Find likes and dislikes for the following categories: Activities, Food, Objects/Presents from other dragons, personality traits in a mate.
2. What long term goals do they have in life?
3. What do they value the most?
Put this list of values in order of most important: Family, Truth, Honor, Friendship, Money/Materials.
For example, say a dragon’s family member is being imprisoned. What will your dragon care about more: the truth of what happened; Their own (or the family) honor that is being tainted; or will they value the fact that something bad is happening to a family member more?
Finally finished W1 so now I can start on this week's prompts!!! :D :D :D Posting before I fill it all out so I can link to it on my lore collection page -------------------------------- -------------------------------- WEEK 2 : PERSONALITIES -------------------------------- Personal Lore Hub Week 1 : The Lair Week 2: Personalities Week 3: Jobs -------------------------------- -------------------------------- 1. What social structure do you use? Is it a Monarchy? Oligarchy? Autocracy? Tribal System? A Commune? The Seer’s Clan is a oligarchy federation, probably best defined at a netocracy. While the Seer and her first creations act as the overarching central governing party, the exercising of that power is minimal at best. Typically the exertion of their authority is left to two issues; inter-state and inter-clan feuds, and moral and ethical boundaries (in regards to actions taken, not personal belief systems). The states are referred to as ‘tribes’, while the Seer’s ‘Clan’ is used to refer to both the states and the Seer’s Tribe. Lastly, when proceeding a tribe or clan with the identifying title, the group type title is capitalised; eg. the Seer’s Tribe, the Canis Tribe. Several tribes exist within the clan, all of which possess their own miniature governance. The governing type, culture, and defining attribute differ from group to group; none of these tribes use geographic boundaries, however. Those who do not belong to a certain tribe fall under the Seer’s Tribe. The clan has communal resources, such as medical, educational, and the basic needs of life, that is provided and maintained for all tribes. Tribes are welcome to introduce their own resources and aids (though the Seer’s Clan maintains that, should other tribes’ members request access, all tribe’s should be open to sharing with other clan dragons). It should be noted that state heads are considered hierarchically equal with senior serving members who solely identify as Seer’s tribesmen. The Canis Tribe is a kraterocracy of sorts, with a wolf-like hierarchy. The alpha pair is the strongest and smartest warriors, while the beta pair have the most raw strength. The tribe then has deltas (seasoned pack members) and omegas (new, baby clan members). Note, omega’s can be young hatchling’s, the youngest dragon in the pack, and/or newly initiated tribesmen. The Canis Tribe also has it’s own medic, though Dionysus serves the entire clan in the medical sector. (Note; all tribe members are members of the Moonbeasts, Lupes, Canis [or hybrids of the three] subspecies.) Current Tribe Heirarchy Alpha Pair Yomi & Andromeda Beta Pair Agares & Chione Deltas Terra & Dionysus & Haku Omegas Zalek The Cattus Tribe is a timocracy, which tends to lead to a dynamic hierarchy which confuses those outside of the tribe itself. The players of power shift constantly, the positioning are extremely situational; both time, issue at hand and surrounding souls are very important players in deciding the leaders of the tribe at any one point. (Note; all tribe members are members of the Big Cat’s subspecies.) The Vulpes Tribe, Raptor Tribe, Fae Tribe, and Atavistic Tribe are all, currently, anarchies. With only two to three members each, these smaller tribes are still discovering themselves, and what order works for them (Note; all Vulpes Tribe members are Kitsune subspecies, all Raptor Tribe members are Forest Raptor subspecies, all Fae Tribe members are Faerie subspecies, and all Atavistic Tribe members are Pharoah Souls subspecies. 2. Head on over to a personality trait guide and give it a quick look. Do any of these words stick to one of your dragons? Grab a few index cards and use one for each dragon. Write down traits you think would match. If you can’t think of any a handy random number generator can help you pick. You can also use google docs to make digital index cards which are much easier to share, but I find having physical ones on hand next to my keyboard more convenient and I’m more likely to jot stuff down on paper when I have an idea. Also handy when you have a lot of dragons… Oh boi, this one's gonna be a dozy! I was holding off, but then I realised I'd never have everyone 'done'-- so I'll post who I have for certain and update when I can! Sticking to four each because, well, I have a lotta dergs. Erlend holds a senior position in the Seer Tribe, and is one of the two recognised leaders of the Tribe when Haldor and Torny (leaders of the clan as a whole) have to withdraw to impartial roles. Erlend is a bit hesitant with Haldor’s tendency to push his own beliefs on others, and Haldor find Erlend frustratingly obstinate with his purposefully disregard towards personal spirituality. But both parties can respect each other’s morals, ethics, and achievements— meaning they work together very well. Both are Seer’s Tribe members, and respect each other for their own strengths and talents. But… well, Riverfell has a bit of a sharp tongue, and a strong distaste for ‘stupid’ injuries— which Erlend is prone too. Erlend, meanwhile, doesn’t see how ‘stupid’ is equivalent to ‘self-sacrificing’. Or how any of his actions were self-sacrificing, to begin with. Finally finished W1 so now I can start on this week's prompts!!! :D :D :D
Posting before I fill it all out so I can link to it on my lore collection page
1. What social structure do you use? Is it a Monarchy? Oligarchy? Autocracy? Tribal System? A Commune?
The Seer’s Clan is a oligarchy federation, probably best defined at a netocracy. While the Seer and her first creations act as the overarching central governing party, the exercising of that power is minimal at best. Typically the exertion of their authority is left to two issues; inter-state and inter-clan feuds, and moral and ethical boundaries (in regards to actions taken, not personal belief systems).
The states are referred to as ‘tribes’, while the Seer’s ‘Clan’ is used to refer to both the states and the Seer’s Tribe. Lastly, when proceeding a tribe or clan with the identifying title, the group type title is capitalised; eg. the Seer’s Tribe, the Canis Tribe.
Several tribes exist within the clan, all of which possess their own miniature governance. The governing type, culture, and defining attribute differ from group to group; none of these tribes use geographic boundaries, however. Those who do not belong to a certain tribe fall under the Seer’s Tribe.
The clan has communal resources, such as medical, educational, and the basic needs of life, that is provided and maintained for all tribes. Tribes are welcome to introduce their own resources and aids (though the Seer’s Clan maintains that, should other tribes’ members request access, all tribe’s should be open to sharing with other clan dragons).
It should be noted that state heads are considered hierarchically equal with senior serving members who solely identify as Seer’s tribesmen.
The Canis Tribe is a kraterocracy of sorts, with a wolf-like hierarchy. The alpha pair is the strongest and smartest warriors, while the beta pair have the most raw strength. The tribe then has deltas (seasoned pack members) and omegas (new, baby clan members). Note, omega’s can be young hatchling’s, the youngest dragon in the pack, and/or newly initiated tribesmen. The Canis Tribe also has it’s own medic, though Dionysus serves the entire clan in the medical sector. (Note; all tribe members are members of the Moonbeasts, Lupes, Canis [or hybrids of the three] subspecies.)
Current Tribe Heirarchy
Yomi & Andromeda
Beta Pair
Agares & Chione
Terra & Dionysus & Haku
The Cattus Tribe is a timocracy, which tends to lead to a dynamic hierarchy which confuses those outside of the tribe itself. The players of power shift constantly, the positioning are extremely situational; both time, issue at hand and surrounding souls are very important players in deciding the leaders of the tribe at any one point. (Note; all tribe members are members of the Big Cat’s subspecies.)
The Vulpes Tribe, Raptor Tribe, Fae Tribe, and Atavistic Tribe are all, currently, anarchies. With only two to three members each, these smaller tribes are still discovering themselves, and what order works for them (Note; all Vulpes Tribe members are Kitsune subspecies, all Raptor Tribe members are Forest Raptor subspecies, all Fae Tribe members are Faerie subspecies, and all Atavistic Tribe members are Pharoah Souls subspecies.
2. Head on over to a personality trait guide and give it a quick look. Do any of these words stick to one of your dragons? Grab a few index cards and use one for each dragon. Write down traits you think would match. If you can’t think of any a handy random number generator can help you pick. You can also use google docs to make digital index cards which are much easier to share, but I find having physical ones on hand next to my keyboard more convenient and I’m more likely to jot stuff down on paper when I have an idea. Also handy when you have a lot of dragons…
Oh boi, this one's gonna be a dozy! I was holding off, but then I realised I'd never have everyone 'done'-- so I'll post who I have for certain and update when I can! Sticking to four each because, well, I have a lotta dergs.
Decided to leave it at the front page only for now lol. I’ll probably add more late, but I need to move on— Got three and a half pages of lore dergs fill for after all (ˆ–ˆ);;
3. Okay, now that you’ve got a basic idea of personalities, how do these 5 dragons interact with each other? Are they lovers? Friends? Rivals? Are they higher or lower rank on the social structure? Maybe they don’t like how the other one operates. Or they do like it. How do they show it? Are they likely to be sneaky about it or upfront?
To pull from random subsections and motivations of the Seer’s Tribe in the Seer’s Clan, I’m going to be using these five dergs for this section!
Erlend is the senior warrior and defender of the Seer’s Clan, which Haldor is one of the two leading dragon’s of. Erlend holds a senior position in the Seer Tribe, and is one of the two recognised leaders of the Tribe when Haldor and Torny (leaders of the clan as a whole) have to withdraw to impartial roles.
Erlend is a bit hesitant with Haldor’s tendency to push his own beliefs on others, and Haldor find Erlend frustratingly obstinate with his purposefully disregard towards personal spirituality. But both parties can respect each other’s morals, ethics, and achievements— meaning they work together very well.
Riverfell is simultaneously the head medic for the Seer’s Clan and a senior serving warrior, while Erlend is the leader of the Warriors. Both are Seer’s Tribe members, and respect each other for their own strengths and talents.
But… well, Riverfell has a bit of a sharp tongue, and a strong distaste for ‘stupid’ injuries— which Erlend is prone too. Erlend, meanwhile, doesn’t see how ‘stupid’ is equivalent to ‘self-sacrificing’.
