Chapter 2. Clan Roles: Hierarchy and Personalities
So you've got a small collection of dragons. Now you need to string them together. Today’s focus is on your dragons themselves. If you have a large lair, start with five dragons, get those hashed out then add more one by one. For now though, focus on just five.
This chapter will be a two-parter. The next section will be focusing on jobs, so don’t worry about detailing that part just yet, but having an idea for general profession for each dragon is fine for now.
1. What social structure do you use? My clan itself is closest to a direct democracy. As the clan grows thought, that is becoming increasingly more unsustainable. There are beginning to be too many groups to keep happy. As a result, there have been calls to elect someone as an equivalent to a president. One of the clan's elders,
Minerva , is the one everyone is asking. She has been quite resistant to it though.
Most of the smaller clans around my own are meritocratic. Many of the Centaur tribes are Oligarchies, usually run by the elders. Some are Theocratic and even militarily autocratic. The Serthis are completely based on brute force and violence though. Nobody is quite sure what what the Maren do and the Longneck are an Oligarchy revolving around the elders.
2. Head on over to a personality trait guide and give it a quick look. - I am going to get five dragons from an RNG and then find traits from the list that fit them.
Stargazer: Agreeable, Efficient, Teacherly, Determined, Placid, Patient, Caring, Elegant, Uncomplaining, Maternal,
Kenpachi: Athletic, Meticulous, Self-critical, Aggressive, Ascetic, Intense, Aloof, Angry, Disturbing, Grim.
Arghest: Courteous, Gentle, Stoic, Earthy, Stern, Asocial, Self-reliant, Rustic, Practical, Observant.
Longfellow: Articulate, Charismatic, Clean, Clever, Creative, Passionate, Shrewd, Questioning, Wishful, Educated.
Bacchus: Amiable, Brilliant, Idealistic, Hardworking, Humble, Loyal, Sociable, Wise, Absentminded, Mellow,
3. Okay, now that you’ve got a basic idea of personalities, how do these 5 dragons interact with each other? These dragons happen to barely if ever interact. Kenpachi is usually cloistered away in her Garden, Arghest is a wanderer, Stargazer is a teacher in the clan, Longfellow is a sailor, and Bacchus is a librarian. They may not have even met each other at any time. The two that are most likely to have met previously are Bacchus and Stargazer. Bacchus is one of the oldest members of the clan and so holds the title of Eld. Though not an official rank or anything, it is a name given to those in Centaur tribes to denote great wisdom. Generally, great age is also implied but not always. Stargazer is a spirit that has been forced to remain in this world, so she is much older than most dragons but lacks many of the same graces. Many clan members have fear for her or are actively hostile towards her. Bacchus is far more tolerant than many clan members though and treats her quite amicably. She has likely checked out books or brought her students to Bacchus's library before, so they probably know each other. In the court of public opinion though, Bacchus is likely higher ranked than Stargazer.
The others are unlikely to have interacted much.
In a ranking of most popular/trusted, from most to least.
Bacchus, Stargazer, Longfellow, Arghest, Kenpachi.
1.
You have the basic of a personality down, now explore further. Find likes and dislikes for the following categories: Activities, Food, Objects/Presents from other dragons, personality traits in a mate.
Stargazer:
Likes reading, teaching, casting magic. She doesn't really need to, but she likes fruit, especially sour fruit. She doesn't really know why she loves her mate, it is like she always had and she knows nothing else.
Dislikes loud noises, spirit-binding, and bigots. She dislikes tubers greatly. She doesn't know why. At the very least, she dislikes those those without an open mind.
Kenpachi:
Likes... very little actually. She likes plants, gardening, and working (it helps occupy her thoughts.) She doesn't really care what she's eating too much. She loves that her mate wants to help her better herself no matter the cost. She dislikes herself, that her mate needs to possibly hurt himself to help her, and conflict (Though she greatly aches for it.)
Arghest:
Likes Rasa, sleeping, and herding. Arghest likes fried Quinoa with some mushroom. Dislikes hunters, Serthis, and ditch diggers. His primary preferences in a mate are that they probably be female and are smaller than him.
Longfellow:
Longfellow likes reading, painting, and thinking. He likes salted venison actually. Everyone else seems to abhor it. What he likes in a mate is, primarily, a specific
male with an eye patch and a cavalier. He dislikes sand, spontaneous duties, and boiled shellbug.
Bacchus:
Likes magic, books, and writing. Bacchus likes clover and daffodil soup. Bacchus is a little old to be taking mates usually, but he likes a woman bigger and bolder than him. It makes him feel safe. He dislikes selfishness, blood, and fire.
2. What long term goals do they have in life?
Stargazer:
Stargazer wants to, for now teach and learn from her students and mate as well as her daughter,
Weir. She hopes to someday return to her spirit realm.
Kenpachi:
Kenpachi wants to stay retired, garden, die, and then be at peace someday. Not particularly in that order. She has little to live for except her mate. She could outlive him by centuries, or he could outlive her. Imperial lifespans are erratic.
Arghest:
Arghest wants to keep raising his Rasa. He has no particular goal besides, "There's another hill to climb." One thing he does want to do is to find his way home someday.
Longfellow:
Longfellow wants to build up the courage he needs to come out to his captain about his feelings for him. He also wants a raise. Three coppers a day hopefully.
Bacchus:
Bacchus is getting very old and he is absolutely terrified of death. He is a skilled Alterer mage and he hopes to find some way to extend his life more than he already has. He has learned a few tricks from the local Necromancer, but it isn't permanent. He's still working on it.
3. What do they value the most?
Put this list of values in order of most important:
Family, Truth, Honor, Friendship, Money/Materials.
Stargazer:
Family, Friendship, Truth, Honour, Material Gain
Kenpachi:
Family, Honour, Truth, Friendship, Material Gain
Arghest:
Honour, Friendship, Material Gain, Family, Truth
Longfellow:
Family, Friendship, Truth, Material Gain, Honour
Bacchus:
Friends, Truth, Honour, Material Gain, Family
