Since I've only run non-profit raffles in the past I'm considering doing a for-profit one so I can finally finally gene up my progens.
But a lot of raffles.. just don't seem to get much activity.
So what would make you interested in a raffle?
What forms of entering/prizes would you be interested in?
I'm really looking for advice to get activity for your raffle.
CURRENT QUESTION:
Should dragons be a prize? If so, what specifications should the dragons have?
Ideas so far:
Forms of entering:
Treasure/gem
Dragons
Items
Bumps
Daily questions
Flash ticket sales and such
Prizes:
Sprites
Eggs
Gene scrolls
Food
Ping list for if I open the raffle for my progens:
Svae

Safirien I'm a majo raffle stalker so I have some idea of what works (I want to run my own but I keep being scared :|)
let's see... keeping them on the front page seems to be important, so bump tickets or a separate bump prize or page prizes are probably a good investment. I've got a contingent of people that semi-camp on raffles with page prizes and talk, and I could probably bring them once our current thread is done if you go that route.
A good balance of prizes unlocked from the start and cool unlockables seems to be important to getting attention. People seem to like pushing for ticket goals to open unlockables.
Multiple alternate currencies are ALWAYS good--I know I love being able to trade items or dragons for tickets.
Make a signature button and offer tickets for wearing it--you get advertising and people will wear it for the tickets. (if you don't have the equipment/skills to make one, you can offer tickets to someone who will make one--I've seen quite a few people do this)
I am sure I have more but I can't think of it right now.

Safirien I'm no expert with how raffles work but what I
really like is a raffle with lots of useful prizes to win - that way there's more chances to win something awesome. ^^ Plus it makes your whole raffle look more expensive/large.
I also like when there are a lot of different, easy ways to buy/trade tickets. That gives people who don't have as much treasure/gems as the person above them, a fair chance to earn tickets.
Also I agree with everything SenchaDrake wrote! Bumps tickets, signature banners etc are a great idea ^^
Sorry it's not much! Hope I helped :P
Please add me to the pinglist for when your raffle opens! :D I'm interest to see how you go ^^

I'm a newb and don't have a whole lot of raffle experience, but one thing I look for is diversity in the prizes. Yeah, winning a cool dragon would be neat, but if I'm short on lair space and my taste in dragons differ from the person arranging the raffle then that won't pull me in. Basically I look at prizes in this order:
Cool dragons? > familiars I don't have? > Battlestones I still need? > Apparel? > Foodstacks? I could always chip in some treasure for the chance of a food stack, there's not much personal preference can do to ruin a foodstack, as long as it feeds the dergs it's good regardless of aesthetics :)

Don't forget to ping me @Aryllia to get my attention.

I think it's all been said. But definitely, for tickets you need bump prizes; the ability to exchange tickets for donated items (if they donate a gene you need then even better for you); maybe even daily trivia?
As for prizes, a huge variety is always nice, what I've noticed is almost a grab bag style with a lot of raffles, with different varieties of foods, familiars, apparel and dragons to chose from.
Sorry I'm not much help, but all of the above have wonderful advice

Running regular events, such as flash giveaways and buy one/get one specials seems to have helped my raffle quite a bit. And the fancier/more expensive your prizes are seems to have a lot to do with the appeal.
If you plan to run a for-profit raffle make it VERY CLEAR in the rules that there are no refunds.

Do people often ask for refunds on raffle tickets? That seems weird.

A pleasure! :D Make sure to ping me when you get it up and running so I can play :)
