They push through the foliage to come to a stop at a clearing, where the silent and still bodies of Soliloquy and Susurri lay, waiting to be buried. The dragon carefully steps closer, trying to be as silent as possible, like they were afraid if they were too loud they’d alert the others to the fact they were there at all. They clutch a scroll tightly yet delicately in their talons, looking between the two fallen members of their new clan, like they were conflicted. Eventually, their gaze settles on Soliloquy, and they dip their head and murmur softly to their fallen Clanmate, “I’m sorry, Soliloquy.” They close their eyes for a brief moment before turning to Susurri, unfurling the scroll held in their talons and starting to quietly chant the words weaved into the papyrus. The scroll starts to emanate a soft glow, ribbons of light pulling themselves from out of the paper and weaving down the caster’s arms and talons, slipping through their claws to dance through the air and weave delicately around Susurri’s still body. Their talons shake with nerves, paranoid that the dragon that had killed Soliloquy and Susurri will see and kill them too before they have a chance to finish the spell. The ribbons glow brighter, and the scroll starts unraveling at the seams and turns into glowing strips of ribbon, gliding through the air to wrap around Susurri’s head, covering his eyes and mouth. The ribbons that had been wrapped around the caster’s talons followed, covering the Spiral’s neck until his skin was no longer visible. The ribbons glow brighter for a split-second before they fade into Susurri’s skin, and the Spiral’s chest expands as he takes a deep breath for the first time in 24 hours. The dragon who had achieved such a feat as bringing back the dead steps closer to him, talons outstretched like they’re going to wake him, when they flinch and look behind them. Paranoia drives them to hurry back to their den, leaving Susurri to wake on his own in the clearing. She blinks repeatedly to clear the blurriness of sleep out of her eyes, turning her head to check on Fable. She’s relieved to note that Fable is still sleeping soundly in the little nook Feroe had prepared for her. Small mercies, she supposed. She stretches her limbs out to help clear the stiffness that came with sleep out of her joints, rising to her feet and yawning as she went to see who had interrupted her sleep. She opens her door with a creak, “I hope you have a good reason for-” She cuts herself off when her eyes land on the dragon in front of her. Her fear spikes when she feels ants on her front, and she scrambles to wipe them away and try to get the cloth off her eyes so she can actually see. The cloth is caught on her horns, however, and she’s further distracted by the burning hot agony that shoots through her when the ants start biting. In the morning, the clan would find Feroe lying dead in her doorway, a red flag caught in her horns and covering her eyes, thousands of little bite marks left behind by fire ants covering her body.

You would think she’d have seen that coming…
Feroe was the seer.

Feroe's den was often fuming with smoke, and inside was warmer than the typical den -- but that did not bother Fable even one bit, because she was used to hot things. In fact, with the habit of bathing herself in molten metals allowed her to be more than comfortable sleeping inside Feroe's den. Perhaps, too comfortable. She slept heavily, unaware of everything that happened last night. She was deep in a tangle of dreams and nightmares, at the mercy of her thoughts and memories.

So when she woke up shivering, she knew it was not a good sign. She turned to her side, gasping to discover Feroe was no longer there. There was howling coming from the front, where chilly, frigid air crept inside the den. The wind bit into her bones.
The front door was open --

Feroe was lying there. She'd blocked the door. No -- did the killer get her now? No...not now! The first thing Fable did was not something she had control of, and she screamed, and wailed, and screamed even more. She could have prevented this, and if the killer got to Feroe last night, that meant she'd slept through everything...if she had simply stayed awake...none of this would have happened.

Rushing forward, Fable almost tripped over herself, but she did not bother about the positioning of her feet. Feroe's body was covered in horrendous looking bites. Fable did not care, and she leaned down to Feroe and shook her. Maybe she was just unconscious, and she'd wake up after a while. But no matter how hard Fable shook Feroe, Feroe remained motionless.

There was a red flag covering Feroe's face. Fable came over. She tried to speak but her throat seemed stuck, and no words came out. The only thing she could do now was to gently remove the flag from her horns and see Feroe's face for one last time.

And Fable sat there, sobbing alone.

Jovial tossed and turned in his sleep, breathing heavily and sweating as the hands made their way out of his back, slithering towards his throat. Vulnerable. Three hands wrapped themselves around his neck. Gently at first, as if they were trying not to wake him up. It could've been a loving touch that Jovial would've leaned in, but it wasn't. The hands gripped his throat and started strangling him, the claws leaving marks on his neck.
"Is it my time?"

Jovial woke up with a gasp, instinctively grabbing at his throat. His claws passed through the claws, yet he still felt them on his neck. Cane. He threw himself off of his nest, towards the cane that laid right next to it. He grabbed the cane by the long part, aggressively tapping it into his other hand as he felt the claws on his throat tighten. A ball of Lightning energy zapped out of the canetop, and Jovial slammed it into his neck sending the elemental energy right through his throat. The hands let out a sizzling sound as they retracted into his lower body, going back into the wound.
"It can't be."

Jovial held his hand on his throat a little more for some comfort, breathing in and out, trying to orient himself again. When he let go, his claws were shaking, and he threw his cane on the ground, and he plopped back on the nest as his legs gave out. He reached for the cane again, grabbing and petting it, almost as an apology. He rested his head on top of the cane, letting out a deep breath. He felt exhausted. He didn't know how long he could keep doing this.
"For as long as I have to."

Maybe one day he'd ask Champ to put him out of his misery. Get rid of him before he became a threat to those he loved.
"But that day is not today."

He tried to gather his thoughts. He'd need his cane charged again. Arlund was a Lightning dragon, wasn't he? Jovial looked out the window that was next to his nest. The sun wasn't up yet, which meant that it was way too early to go wake up a clanmate, especially someone he didn't know before. Well, that would give him some time to put together a gift for him. If he was going to ask for a favor, it only felt fair to give him something in return. But what would he like? He didn't seem like the materialistic type, so maybe he'd like Jovial to write a poem for him? He quickly discarded the idea - all he wrote were organizational and political documents, he wasn't really an artistically gifted guy. Maybe Champ would have a poetry book, or Fable would tell him a story, or Feroe would help him make a small ornament...
His thoughts were cut short by a scream - a scream that made his heart drop to his stomach. It wasn't a pained scream or a war cry, but the sadness in the tone shook Jovial to the core. He knew that voice.
"Fable."

With the cane in hand, he burst his door open and ran. He opened his wings and flapped them as if he wanted to fly. His body protested his attempts with pain, but he didn't stop clawing the ground or flapping his wings. His calws left marks on the floor, as if he was trying to transfer some of the pain in his body onto the ground. He choked out a breath before forcing himself to take another big one and keep going. Just keep going.
"If anything happens to her..."

"Fable!"
He yelled out as he saw the dragon he was searching for. She wasn't bleeding - thank the eleven - but she was crying. He ran towards her, tripping over something in his attempts to comfort her. What could've scared her this bad - was it the killer? "Fa-"
"No. NO NO NONO NO NO NO! FEROE, NO!"

Jovial pulled himself back from Fable, taking a good look at the thing that tripped him on the way. Feroe. His sister laid there, motionless and covered in infected looking bumps. He crawled over to hold her head, letting out a wail that would rival Fable's. "Feroe - Feroe please - you can't - please Feroe - We were going to - you - This clan - Feroe, please!" He couldn't form a coherent sentence or even catch a proper thought, so he just held her head and sobbed.

He’d lost his own brother all too soon, and even he had many days that he thought would be his last. Death still shocked him, of course, but he was at least better able to internalize the fear than most. Then again, maybe that was because he’d already lost everyone he had loved. From his experience with death, he knew that there were certain rites and rituals that were to be done to show proper respect for a body. Unfortunately, he didn’t know those rituals, nor could he read up on what he should do to the two fallen clan members he was going to visit. They at least knew the bodies should be buried, but they were too weak to do that alone, so all they prepared was two bouquets of beautiful wildflowers. Hopefully, that would appease the spirits of the deceased enough to avoid any hauntings. Requiem took the flowers from the same field they wove their own garlands in, since they knew they masked the stench of death quite well, and then brought them to the clearing where the fallen were resting. It felt odd, to leave the bodies out in the elements, but maybe it was intentional. After all, they had heard stories of bodies being left in nature so that their souls could flee before they were buried. Carefully, they set the bouquet of bright yellow and white flowers next to Sol, but hesitated before setting the other bouquet down. The more they looked at Suri, the more it looked like the spiral was… breathing? Confused, Requiem lightly tapped his shoulder, moving the bundle of purple and pink flowers to his other talon. “S-Suri?” He tried, struggling to remember his full name. “Are you… a-are you there?” Dead dragons didn’t breathe, after all.

Even after Jovial yelled and cried Fable somehow failed to hear him, and even after Jovial tripped on Feroe’s body she failed to see him. Perhaps she was too consumed by her inner chaos to focus on what was going on around her. Her vision was a blurry mess, with the few tears that managed to accumulate at the bottom of her eyelids. Time appeared to slow down into individual frames, and it did look like Fable was slowly drifting away from this world. But in her head, everything was loud like the beating of a thousand drums. She was trapped within the confines of her own mind.

She only made contact with the world again when the weight of Feroe’s head lifted from her arms — it was only then she raised her head to find a distraught Jovial struggling to utter coherent sentences as he tried to embrace his sister.

Fable looked stiff, and no words were spoken. Jovial and Fable sat there together, and the moment was shared.

Darkness.

That was all that he knew, all that he saw, all that he felt. Darkness and silence, thick as a blanket, suffocating as smoke. It smothered him in painless oblivion and he floated there, motionless, eyes wide open, seeing nothing.

It was so, so dark.

All alone.

The words echoed in his mind, stirring the muted colors of his emotions, sparking something small and weak and dim. It flickered, a tiny ember of flame, defiant against the monsters in the shadows. The monsters in the forest, the monsters, the monster...

All alone. All alone. All alone.

He could suddenly see... something. Something other than darkness. It glimmered, burning away his numbness, making him feel... alive. alive again. Light. It was so beautiful. He could reach for it, could escape. He had a choice now. He could be free, free, not alone. Never alone again. But would there be anything waiting for him in the light? For a minute, all he did was watch as Suri acknowledged his death - yes, he was dead - before he suddenly jumped up and bolted for where the clan was. “W-Wait!” Requiem shouted after him, but the spiral had already taken to the skies. With a pained sigh, he took his bouquet in his mouth and began running after the maybe-zombie, knowing fully well his wings were in too much pain to be flying anywhere. “Wait!” Requiem tried again through a mouthful of flowers after catching up to the spiral, who must have been slowed down by just returning from the dead, because otherwise, the Skydancer would never have reached him. “S-S-Suri! Please, wait! I have… s-so many questions!” That wasn’t even scratching the surface. Requiem didn’t know Suri at all, but he was still dying (ha) to know how the spiral was up and running again, or if he could explain anything about what had happened lately. “Are y-you sure you’re in a s-state to reach the clan? Can’t we stop and t-talk?” While he wouldn’t call himself a very threatening dragon, he had to wonder if Suri was afraid of him, and that was why he was running. Did the spiral think he would be killed again? Did he even think Requiem was capable of that, or remember who had killed him that fateful night? Maybe the bouquet he had brought could at least serve as a token of goodwill.

Jovial wailed and wailed, broken sobs falling out of his mouth as he held Feroe's head close to his chest. His body shook with each breath he took, and his old wound glowed a sick purple as the hands crawled out, heading straight towards Fable. Jovial's body spasmed with pain, the shade draining whats left of his life energy to attack any living being on sight; himself and Fable.

With no energy to fight, Jovial collapsed next to his sister as the hands reached his neck, and the last thing he saw as his vision faded was Fable, looking at him with horrified eyes as she tried to fight off the hands.

As two ghostly hands solidified at his throat, three more flew towards Fable, aiming for her neck as well.

Interacting with Jovial and Fable

Arlund was not able to have a very restful sleep. Everything that had occurred within the first few days of arriving was quite unnerving. He awoke quite early, and began feverishly sketching a rough draft for a rather disturbing looking painting. He hadn't even realized how ghastly it appeared until dawn broke, and his mind cleared of its fog. Though the skill of the piece was undeniable, Arlund just couldn't stomach the fact that such a horrid thing was made by his own talons. Arlund sighed deeply, and hung his head.

"Now Muse, why ever would you allow me to create such a thing?"

He draped a heavy fabric over the canvas, and tried his best to go on forgetting about it. All this doom and gloom was no good for anybody's psyche. Arlund decided that a little self care was in order. Heating the large tub of water at the back of the cave, Arlund had scattered in some nicely scented petals that were usually reserved for dyeing. The bath was a perfect temperature, Arlund could finally feel his head clearing, and his muscles relaxing. He snacked on grapes and mint leaves to freshen his breath.
The morning was well underway by the time Arlund had emerged from his den, refreshed and energized. He hoped that he could brighten the mood of his new clanmates as well. Taking flight into the crisp morning air, Arlund couldn't help but trumpet a few notes of song.

As he surveyed the clan grounds, it seemed that many dragons had yet to wake up. Suddenly a wailing cry cut through the air, it nearly froze the prince out of the sky, shocking him to the core. Arlund swooped as swiftly as he could to the origin of the sound, finding the clan's own second-in-command being CONSUMED BY SHADE!?

Arlund's scales bristled, diving at a breakneck pace, he summoned his thunder from within. Lightning crackling and charging within his maw, once within reach, the prince bathed the amorphous monstrosity in plazma. Swooping past and gaining altitude to survey the situation, it had seemed the shade was gone. Arlund quickly landed to tend to both dragons.

"What in the eleven was that!? Are you both unharmed?"

In the midst of Fable’s semi-catatonic state, Fable had not been aware of the black, wispy things that wrapped around her neck. She continued to sit there, pressing herself against Feroe’s cold body, weeping. The shade arms only got more vicious, more violent, and soon Fable found herself gaping for air. She tried to rip the shade arms out of her neck but to her horror, her arms passed through the arms. They were not quite corporeal.

She got up to see who her attacker could be, only to discover Jovial bending down, consumed with grief. The black things bursted out of his back, wavering like snakes, ready to prey on any living creature they could find. Some of them even attacked Jovial.

“No—” Fable tried to speak, but the arms only further constricted her neck.

“Jovial, please, don’t let it consume you—”

Then, there was rumble of thunder, and a blinding light flashed before her. The tightness on her neck vanished, and Fable could see again. There was a large shadow looming over the both of them as they lay collapsed on the ground. Fable gasped for the air she’d desperately sought.

It was Arlund, and he’d destroyed the arms with his lightning magic. He was now working to get Jovial up. Jovial was weak, and Fable was not sure if he could stand up. He should rest…

Thank the eleven he woke up in the nick of time, if not, Fable feared, they would both die with Feroe. It was a gruesome thought to think about, and Fable tried her best to shake it off her head.

The killer was still out there. Fable hoped by tonight, the killer would be brought to justice, and there would be no deaths again. No more families torn apart…

“Thank you for saving the both of us,” Fable said to guardian. “I-I’m fine. But…how’s Jovial? He needs to charge…he needs to…”

“Please help him.”
