"How was I supposed to know?" You countered.
"Because you were supposed to keep watch!" Karnak snarled at you.

You both turned to the battlefield ahead of you and watched the stars get swallowed away.

"It's time," he whispered.

As an array, everyone marched forward into the darkness. The vines gripped at your legs and your eyes strained to see. Some dragons fell back and some began to sprint. Everyone seemed to have their place in this void of war, except for you. You got closer to the darkness and saw the Shade's temple.

"That's the goal, kid!" Karnak yelled. "Once we destroy that, the war is over!" You could just barely make out his words as everyone yelled over the horror they faced. Hands of black appeared from the ground and sky, gripping at dragons as they trotted. You lifted your wings to the sky, and felt the power of an old myth. Icarus was the name, you recalled. Fly too close to the ground, and you get mauled by the hands. Fly too high, and the darkness is sure to find you. The tower radiated like a beacon, urging you to go and fight and win.

Karnak was still running along the ground, shaking off his legs. Many dragons fell, but so did the shade. It was slowly pushed back further and further away from the fresh plants that decorated the land. You used magic from the air to challenge them, their magic strong, but not stronger than the combined might of yours and the other warriors on the field.

As you flew, you managed to take a glimpse behind you. What you saw was unfathomable- The horizon, from here in the murk, looked fresh with hope and joy. There were few dragons left to fight, but the ones who were left were determined to guarantee they did not die in vain.

You had covered more distance than you thought, getting lost in the adrenaline. Distracted, a Shade limb grabbed at your wing and tore it. You tumbled down, not far from the beacon.

You flinched in pain, but kept on walking. Karnak was beside you.

"Kid, go back!" he yelled. "Go back! It's not worth it!"

You were unphased. You persisted like a warrior should.

You began to see things, these small creatures in the horizon. It was the Shade, you thought indefinitely.

"Kid! Go home! You're poisoned!"

You blinked away his hysteria. You could see the beacon. You lunged for it, only to be grabbed again by the shade. You got a good look at the beings in front of you, and they were... Hatchlings?

Hatchlings, with eyes of pure black. Trying to shake off the Shade that was pulling you down, you trod forward. Karnak came over to you, and snapped at the Shade near your foot. They diverted their attention from you and settled it on taking down Karnak.

You were free.

"Go, kid! Run! You can do it!" Karnak was becoming swallowed by the shade, much like the other dragons had.

You ran towards the beacon, and you hit it with your bolts of magic. It trembled, but did not give. Many dragons before you had worn its structure to where it was now vulnerable.

You hit it again, and you snapped at it with your jaws. It shook, and with a tumbling sway, it toppled to the ground.

A hiss rolled over the plains, and the shade disappeared from the land. They rolled back like a receding tide pulled by the moon. The daylight appeared back and you fell to your side.

"Karnak?" you called, unsure.

There was no response.

The Shade were gone, however. The horizons were cleared.

It was hard, you thought, to know you've just barely succeeded.

Your wing burned, but a few dragons who had battled with you knelt down next to you, easing your struggles. A few mages tended to your wounds, but they let you be on the battlefield.

"Thank you," they whispered again and again.

In the back, you could see the few surviving Imperials dig through the rubble, performing a ritual only they knew.

You shook off your distractions. You had prepared for this.

You swerved around limb and hand with relative ease.

Why were they avoiding you?

You looked back once more, to see that you and Karnak were the only two left, and Karnak was nearly overcome by the Shade.

"Run, kid!" He yelled, muffled.
Save Karnak!
Get to the temple!

You ran to save Karnak, and he began to yell beneath the goo. "No! Kiddo, no! I'll be fine!"

You didn't listen, however, and began running faster towards him. You grabbed around his chest and began to pull him up. Slowly, you both lifted as the Shade hissed. More limbs seemed to spring up, hungry for fresh kill. Still, you both used your might to pull away.
After hope seemed nearly lost, and your energy fading away, you broke free. You both took off. Karnak went immediately to the temple, flying now. You noticed a bit of a falter in his flight, but still he made it. The shade began to try and pull you down once again. You struggled against them, pulling away from the shroud. You were terrified, but you knew that if you called out, Karnak would never make it to the temple in time to save Sornieth.

Call Karnak!
Stay quiet and hope for the best.

You continued running to the temple, its power drawing you in nearer. Karnak was cheering you on, despite the trouble he was in.

You hit it with your magic as it grew closer. You hit it again, and snapped at it.

"Ke- Keep going, kiddo!" you heard.

You thrashed at it, and snapped at it. You did everything you could to topple it. The shade tried to reach at you, furious, but you were more powerful than the Shade.

You hit the tower one last time, and down it went. It crashed against the ground and the Shade screeched in terror.

They fell back, like marionettes on a string, and you were the puppetmaster.

You looked forward and saw the sun get uncovered and a sickening light fall over the battlefield.

The nature seemed to come back as the Shade left.

You immediately ran to Karnak, an empty thumping in your chest.

"Karnak?" you whispered.

There wasn't a response, and you nearly turned away.

"You did it, kiddo." He sighed and then smiled, drained from the battle he fought.

You smiled back, happy to have at least one other person who you could trust.

He ached as he stood, and walked over to a fallen Imperial.

"Go home," he said. "You earned it. I'll finish up here."

"Karnak!" you yelled.

He kept running.

"I'm sorry, kid!" He yelled back. He was almost there.

He crashed his entire weight against the pillar, again and again. You strained to watch through the Shade's grasp. You fought upwards, forwards, out. Anywhere but here. You watched as Karnak roared and slammed the pillar once more, and let it topple to the ground.

You saw the darkness receding, but not fast enough.

You caught one last glimpse of the sun before the Shade took over.

You still fought with the Shade, but you let Karnak do his work.

You were strong.

You could do this.

You pulled up with all of your strength, kicking the Shade away like a vermin. You were scratched, but it was no matter. You still strained away, or upward, or forward. You just had to get them off.

Karnak reached the temple and began to destroy it, bit by bit. And, bit by bit, you got the Shade away. Karnak was struggling to break the pillar, as strong as he was. He fought it much like you fought the Shade. But, Karnak looked back and got one glimpse of you struggling, and you locked eyes for a split second.

Karnak rushed backwards, and then propelled forward, knocking the pillar to the ground. You still fought, unsure of what would happen.

Slowly, the Shade began to die away, taking away their grasping hands, and taking away the darkness.

You stood, still shaking on your legs to stand.

"Woah, kid," Karnak said, and eased you downward.

"You did it," you said in a soft voice.

Karnak smiled. "You may have helped...

Just a little."

With a full belly, you marched up to the battlefield alongside Karnak.
"Haven't you eaten?" you asked. He shook his head.
"Too busy. Or nervous... One of the two," he said, smiling. Their onslaught would start soon. There was mild chatter, but most were silent as they waited. The grass was still growing dark, but the Shade could be held off for just a moment longer than originally thought. You and Karnak exchange glances. Some dragons were much further ahead, while some were much further behind. Then, without warning, everyone grew silent and marched forward, one step at a time. Then, some took off running, others flew, and some stood as still as the temple that stretched in front of them.

"What is that?" You asked. Karnak responded:
"It's causing the Shade invasion. It just... appeared. And then this, all of this, happened."
You nodded. You now had a reason to fight. You set out, determined now, to destroy the pillar.

Many of the dragons began viciously snapping at the Shade crawling up to greet them, while others avoided them and lunged straight for the temple. You began to dart at the temple that stretched above the tall grass and above the trees that were withered and fragile.

The Shade grew higher, awakened with the new flesh invading "their" territory.

They would not win. How could they? There were too many fighting them. Cheers and rallies echoed through the land as many dragons cascaded against the dark structure.

With a mighty rumble it fell in all of its glory.

You let out a cry as the ruin began to sweep away and you could feel the life radiate from the Earth.

Karnak smiled back as he snapped at some of the shrieking Shade, sinking from the spoiled Earth.

The war had been won, just like that. A few dragons had fallen, and they would be honored. A few others were wounded, soon to be healed by the mages.

All seemed to be fine and well.

Karnak approached you. "Good job, kid." He said.

"I need to ask you something," you said.

"Sure," was his response.

"How did I get here? I can't remember."

Karnak smiled. He definitely knew, but wouldn't tell.

"It's a long story, kiddo. Not one for today."

You stretched out your wings to bathe in the sunshine. What a wonderful day it was.

You looked around, unsure. Nobody seemed to move, only stare into the fluid night, like machines.

The stars flared out, and then flashed back into existence.

Then, a pink being floated out into the darkened night. Its many limbs helped guide its body through to the army of people gathered.

"There is a surge of magic here," he called. "I saw it in the stars, and you see it in the Shade. I am here to help fight it with you."

Many people cheered, some stood in awe, but you knew something was amiss. His eyes were just not right. He wasn't the Arcanist.

You shook Karnak awake so that he could marvel at the being as well. Karnak was an Arcane dragon, after all. He'd know.

Karnak did look in awe, for merely a second before his smile faded.

"It's not him," he said.

"I know," you replied.

"What do we do?" someone whispered.

"We fight," Karnak responded.

The Shade flushed forward, and onward the dragons marched. Half went for the pillar. A quarter went against the Shade. The final quarter noticed something that had to be stopped.

They clashed head to head against the Shade, soaring above or below their clawing hands that yearned for fresh blood.

The mock Arcanist that tried to fight back against the attacking dragons was quickly discovered as an illusion. The distraction costed them valuable time.

The still tried to fight, however, and fight they did.

They fought until there was only one left- You.

You were sinking into the overpowering Shade, trying to pull you into oblivion. All of their efforts were focused on you now, and you were no match.

You fell into the void, the pillar still entirely intact.

The arcane being inched forward, looking at everyone's faces.

He began speaking, again. "Such brave souls here," it said in the Arcanist's voice. "Such- Suchh-" The illusion began to flicker and the voice changed into frantic howls.

"He's not real!" you called. "Go!"

Everyone ran or flew forward, using their magic or melee to destroy the Shade and go for the pillar.

Brilliant splashes of color sprung up from the battle. A Fire dragon's flame, a Light dragon's bolt, an Arcane dragon's odd pink orbs all were displayed with beauty and fierceness on the field. The battle looked nearly won.

The Shade had gotten many dragons, you realized, but the army still pressed onward, and so did you.

You all circled around the pillar. Mighty Snappers rammed their weight against the base of the tower, while the rest spiraled upwards, causing the temple to take a mighty crash into the barren soil.

Karnak smiled back as he snapped at some of the shrieking Shade, sinking from the spoiled Earth.

The war had been won, just like that. Many dragons had fallen, and they would be honored and buried.

With a head full of magic and tired eyes, you marched up to the battlefield alongside Karnak.

The Shade would not win. How could they? There were too many fighting them. Cheers and rallies echoed through the land as many dragons cascaded against the dark structure.

With a mighty rumble it fell in all of its glory.
