This is so cool it's a lost Second Age laboratory aaaaaa
I can't wait to see what your dragons find.
Also, I think you guys may be responsible for the rockslides some other groups faced.

Solve a maze by punching through the walls. Classic.
I really love reading everyone's stories. Onwards, to the final challenge!

Sorry I haven't been responding to this thread as much as I should have. Things have gotten pretty quiet for my team, so I guess I haven't felt like adding anything new to their adventures. But I may make one last post to wrap things up once the ending arrives. Hang in there!

While we took our watches at night, we had rather a lot of time to listen. During the days, there was the constant sound of our footsteps, mixed with the quiet chatter between teammates, and although we often took time to stay quiet and aware of our surroundings - the quiet of the day was nothing compared to the quiet of sitting alone in a dark cave with nothing but your thoughts for hours at a time. It was during those quiet hours, that we all began to hear something. It was an indescribable sound, like wind moving through tunnels or a constant exhale.
When we prepared for the day's expedition, we knew we had to follow this sound - to figure out what it could possibly be. We walked through smoothed, dusty caverns, constantly turning around upon reaching a dead end, hoping that we would eventually be able to find the source of this noise - and this dust. Soon enough, we found what we were looking for. We came to a large open chamber filled with a number of large vents that came from below. The dust slowly drifted out of these vents, accompanied by the slow whir of moving air.
We began to look around, trying to see what was below, but the dust billowing up from each vent blocked our view.
Suddenly, a loud hum came from the area below - as if someone had powered on a strange machine. The humming became louder and louder and the whirring faster and faster, until soon the ground was shaking and the vents began to split apart, collapsing the floor beneath us.
Fortunately, Styx easily stabilized himself mid-air, grabbing his companions and bringing us to the stable passage nearby.
When the ground around us had settled, the loud whir of the machine still roared and vibrated the caverns. Wondering what it could possibly be, we decided to follow the sounds. Perhaps we could get some insight into who had built this place - and what it was for. Unfortunately, a number of live wires had been exposed in the fall, making navigation rather dangerous.
Styx was easily able to point out the dangerous places, making sure we were able to pass through this room without harm.
We eventually came to an open room with smoothed stone floors and walls with metal-paneling. The back of the room was home to one of the largest and most intricately constructed machines we had ever seen. It laid at the center of a massive, cylindrical chamber with pipes going upwards, and somehow it still seemed to be running, although at a low power.
We spent many hours thoroughly looking all around the machine, trying to draw and take notes on as much of it as we possibly could. It did not look like anything ever built by dragonkind, and the writing on the walls was not in any known language that we had ever heard of. Additionally, considering the state of the machine, it appeared to have been running for many, many years. We weren't sure how it was still going, seeing as it was half covered in ice as if frozen in time from an era long past.
Eventually, after hours of investigation, we grew tired, and set up our camp in this room - hoping to investigate it further when fully rested.
I am very surprised that my Styx is helping out so much in the team!
Because he's a rather clumsy, way too energetic dragon and everyone else in my Clan agrees that he's pretty much useless, because he never focuses on what to do and always annoys everyone else
Yet his skills came in very handy so far, I bet after this adventure the Clan will look at him with much more appreciation, I'm glad for him xD

I forgot about this before, but eugh.. it eats dragon eggs.. thats just wrong.
'Morning' came - and it brought with it aching backs and cold toes. By this point, we were beginning to grow a bit tired of having to sleep on the cold, hard ground, but our trip was nearly halfway done and there was still so much more to see. We ate our breakfast, packed our camp, and hopped up to continue our journey.
We had not been looking for long when we came across the beautiful sight of sparkling gemstones, everywhere. As we entered a series of crystalline caverns the passages became tighter and more jagged, and the crystals more and more reflective - almost creating a hall of mirrors that easily disoriented us as we wandered through. The light from our lanterns flickered against the floors, walls, and ceiling, bouncing around the corners and sometimes nearly blinding us upon hitting a gemstone at just the wrong angle. We continued through these caves, although slowly and cautiously, taking samples as we went and hoping that we would not become lost.
Fortunately, Ambros's navigational know-how kept us on track and headed in the right direction.
Eventually we made our way to the center of these caverns - and up ahead we could see a promising pit in the floor, but it was unfortunately blocked by a thin crystalline wall.
Zebra punched the wall with all of her might, allowing us to make our way into the chamber.
Now able to pass through the wall, we were able to look into the hole in the cavern floor. We had the perfect, bird's-eye view of the large open chamber containing the horrible 'mother' of all mutants. The creature, a writhing mass of black tentacles and eyes, wiggled about, eating the dragon eggs and other foods that the tiny, similar creatures brought it.
Now that we were here, we realized that we needed to be very careful. The horrible creature could easily reach one of its tendrils up through the hole to grab us. This was a good time to be stealthy.
Zebra beckoned us away from the pit and began to cover us with bits of leaves and moss, covering up our bright scales with dirt and mud to assist in this task. When we had finished making ourselves look like ordinary rocks and plantlife, we crouched down at the edge of the hole, peering over the side.
From here, we watched the creatures, taking notes and learning as much as we could.
One of the things we first noticed, is that it was quite clear that these 'creatures' had once been a relatively normal form of wildlife. Years of exposure to the dust had left them strange and mutated, with unusual black tentacles and extra eyes and other limbs. Some of the creatures had mutated more than others. There were creatures nearly recognizable as mice and bats, and others that had long since left their status as 'normal wildlife' behind.
The second thing that became clear is that the 'mother' was nearly entirely dependent on the smaller creatures. It was so large that it could no longer fit through the tunnels, leaving its children to dig tunnels, collect food from the caverns above, and perhaps even venture outside of the cave itself. The fact that it was eating nocturne eggs, helpless beastclan individuals, and other surface-dwelling creatures indicated that the appetite of this thing may be forcing the helpers to the surface.
The third and final thing that we noticed, is that the cause of all of this seemed to be the dust, which was drifting up from narrow slots in the floor. Creatures collected the dust in piles and licked it up - almost as if it were a source of energy itself. The creatures had such a great appetite for it that there was nearly none on the walls or in the air in this chamber.
When we grew tired of watching the creature, we retreated into a secluded corner of the crystalline caves to make our camp and sleep in shifts. We still had the full intention of trying to take it down - as it was clearly a serious hazard to dragonkind - but we needed to be fully rested in order to do so.

Okay, okay. So my dragons instead found the big machine instead of the big monster. Little bit disappointed because that means I most likely can't use the idea I've had floating since people started posting about the big-old-egg-eating momma monster.
So I'mma post it now. A bit paraphrased, but it'll do.
"It eats... Eggs? That's absolutely revolting."
"Well now I'm kinda glad Eulalia didn't go. She'd have charged in there claws ablaze and probably would have gotten us all killed. I'd worry about her safety."
"Dude, I'd worry about the monster's safety. An angry Eulalia is no joke."
But nope. Big machine. Eso si que es.

hecate, looking into one of the vents, immediately concluded that these were mechanically constructed fans. Although their precise purpose was yet unknown, they seemed to lead down into some kind of machine - one that was almost certainly the source of all this dust.
If we wanted to figure out what was going on in this cave, we needed to get down to that machine.
We followed the distant noises as best we could, but with the way the tunnels were laid out, it was not easy. We often found ourselves face to face with a dead-end, sending us backtracking for hours.

So the team is working together well today, on day 5 of their exploration. I’m pretty proud of them for that; they’ve survived largely without incident, no one’s really turned out to be the hero yet, but no one has messed up too badly, either.
hecate, accidental leader of the group (see log for day 1), makes certain observations today, she does seem more and more to be taking to her role as leader. she’s quiet and confidant, doesn’t exercise too much control over the group. she hasn’t led them into any major pit falls, and she’s letting the other members of the team utilize their skills when necessary. from “meets expectations”, she’s inching towards “exceeds expectations” (are expectations too low, we wonder?) She’s maintaining her A average.
anteros and phaedrus are happy to be led by hecate, it appears. from anteros, we expect this. that one’s barely got two sticks to rub together if you know what i mean. from phaedrus…maybe I expected more pizzazz. more fire. maybe he’s biding his time. maybe his motives have yet to be revealed. regardless, both boys receive a B for… well… not failing, i guess.
also it should be noted that while many other adventurers are encountering a monster right now, my team has hit…. a fan. it remains to be seen, what sort of shift will hit the fan.

Logs, days 3 through 5
Day 3
The J2M awoke suddenly to the site of a small glowing mouse sitting atop Evoney's head. Shaking the creature off, we all stared at it in curiosity. It was covered in tiny bioluminescent baubles and, as we looked up, we could see several more similar creatures running around in the distance, their lights bobbing up and down in the passages of the cave..
Evoney twitched in her sleep. She felt a tickle on her head. Waking up, she shook it off. It was a little mouse, and it was glowing! She woke the others. They were all amazed. I began to scurry off and they followed hoping it would lead to discovery.
After a few minutes of watching in confusion, we ate, packed our things, and followed the little glowing mice - wherever they might lead us.
As we progressed, we noticed a bright light coming from the cavern ahead. Following it, slightly worried about what it might be, we eventually came to a breathtaking sight. The passage opened up into a massive underground ecosystem where everything was bioluminescent. Little animals scurried around, glowing. Plants grew along the walls and up towards the ceiling, glowing. Glowing insects buzzed around glowing flowers and glowing bats slept atop the glowing ceiling. We wondered what the cause of this might be, and noticed a thin, clear dust drifting throughout the air of the room. Yet, we had no trouble breathing and did not seem to be experiencing any harmful effects.
As we continued through the bioluminescent caverns, picking up a number of samples along the way, we wondered how there could be so much life in what we had expected to be such a barren and lifeless cave.
It was then that Merlin stopped and told the group to stay quiet. As we listened, we could hear the sounds of what seemed to be a very large creature moving through the vines..
"Wait!"said Merlin in a loud whisper. "Do you hear that? It sounds big."
Everyone stopped and listened.
But we were no cowards. We moved towards the sounds, hoping to get a glimpse of whatever they might be. It was then that we realized we need to look up. And as we did so, we found ourselves face to face with a massive, glowing spider..
"What did I say?!" exclaimed Merlin with impatience. "If you hear danger, go the other way! Danger: No, Relative safety: Yes!"
As the spider dropped from the ceiling towards us, our team readied for the inevitable combat.
Bilbo, pushing the rest of us out of the way, scurried around the legs of the beast, distracting and disorienting it. Just moments later, he flew up and around the spider, digging his teeth and claws into the creature's neck. Clawing at its back in desperation, the spider tried to scrape the attacker off onto the nearby wall, without success. It was then that Bilbo took his opportunity to deliver the final blow, eliminating his opponent..
"It wouldn't matter which way we went, Merlin," said Bilbo, catching his breath and shaking off bioluminecent blood. "There's probably something like this in every cavern."
"Always good to have you in a tight spot, brother," said Evoney as she patted him with her wing
Our enemy defeated, we continued on into a smaller side passageway.
After a few hours of following the small and winding tunnels, we eventually came to a massive, peculiarly straight tunnel with rough, ice-coated sides. It measured perhaps 100 meters in width and an equal number in height. We followed this tunnel for another few hours, collecting various samples from the walls, before setting our camp, eating our meal, logging our activities, and going to sleep.

Day 4:
There was no dawn, and we couldn't be sure of what time it was - or even what day it was - but nevertheless we awoke feeling quite rested. Taking the time to eat a meal and pack up our items, we soon found ourselves up and ready for another day of exploration.
It was not long into the day's walk that our path began to spiral upwards. Although we had not yet seen any creatures, we had heard the frequent shuffling of tiny footsteps echoing through the halls. We knew we were not alone, and we were not afraid, although we soon would be.
"I have a bad feeling about this," said Merlin
It was later in the day when we came to a large, circular hole in the wall. Seeing the movement inside, we approached cautiously, turning our lanterns down as dim as they could go. We found ourselves looking down into the most massive room we had yet seen. At the center of this large and round chamber, was a writhing mass of tentacles and eyeballs and teeth. Nearing 200 meters tall, and equally wide, it was easily the largest living creature we had ever laid our eyes upon. Around it, thousands of tiny version of this similar creature were all feeding a constant flow of various plants and animals to the 'mother.' There were stacks of grasses and plants arranged in nests, where all of these strange and horrible creatures wiggled about.
"WHAT IS THAT?!" squealed Merlin
In that moment, the exact same thing was going through all of our heads 'Great dragon gods what kind of horror is that?!'
Of course, we did not have too long to take in this situation, as it was soon after that the 'mother' had spotted us, reaching one of its tentacles up through the hole, which was conveniently situated about halfway to the ceiling of the massive room. We knew we had to act, and quickly.
"Our combined forces will not beat this creature," said Bilbo
We backed away from the hole as Merlin climbed into a nook in the passageway, beckoning for his teammates to follow. There we stayed, quietly waiting and watching as the beast's tendril blindly felt around the passageway.
That's when Merlin spotted a nook in the creature's blindspot. "Guys," he whispered. "This way."
Quietly creeping from our hiding place to get another look at the creature, we... 'hey! Is that a nocturne egg?! Is that thing eating dragon babies like popcorn?!' This was bad. Very bad. We needed to hatch quite the plan if we were to take out a horror like this.
We knew that there had to be a way for us to fight this thing that didn't simply involve conventional combat. Because, let's face it, we were not going to be able to take down anything that big. Not with only the three of us. As we watched this thing function, we looked around the room, hoping to get a few ideas.
We all looked at each other for a few minutes, hoping someone would think of something... but we had nothing. There was no way this could possibly ever end well.
Having decided that the best course of action would be to survive the journey and come back with back-up (a lot of back-up), we began to seek out safer areas to explore. For the rest of the day, we wandered downwards, collecting samples, eventually finding a nice, quiet place to make our camp (and forget what we had just seen). There, we ate, logged our activities, and slept.

Day 5:
Evoney, looking into one of the vents, immediately concluded that these were mechanically constructed fans. Although their precise purpose was yet unknown, they seemed to lead down into some kind of machine - one that was almost certainly the source of all this dust.
"They're vents," said Evoney in disbelief. "Mechanical vents!"
"But that's impossible," said Merlin. "The caves are ancient. No one has been in here for centuries"
"Only one way to find out," said Bilbo.
If we wanted to figure out what was going on in this cave, we needed to get down to that machine.
We followed the distant noises as best we could, but with the way the tunnels were laid out, it was not easy. We often found ourselves face to face with a dead-end, sending us backtracking for hours.
Although progress was slow, Bilbo's map made our goals possible.
"This is beyond amazing," said Evoney in awe.
"I've never seen anything like it," said Bilbo.
"WE have to investigate this!" said Evoney, excitedly.
Logs, days 3 through 5
Quote:
Day 3
The J2M awoke suddenly to the site of a small glowing mouse sitting atop Evoney's head.
Quote:
Quote:
But we were no cowards. We moved towards the sounds, hoping to get a glimpse of whatever they might be. It was then that we realized we need to look up. And as we did so, we found ourselves face to face with a massive, glowing spider..
"What did I say?!" exclaimed Merlin with impatience. "If you hear danger, go the other way! Danger: No, Relative safety: Yes!"
As the spider dropped from the ceiling towards us, our team readied for the inevitable combat.
Quote:
Quote:
Our enemy defeated, we continued on into a smaller side passageway.
After a few hours of following the small and winding tunnels, we eventually came to a massive, peculiarly straight tunnel with rough, ice-coated sides. It measured perhaps 100 meters in width and an equal number in height. We followed this tunnel for another few hours, collecting various samples from the walls, before setting our camp, eating our meal, logging our activities, and going to sleep.
Quote:
Quote:
Quote:
In that moment, the exact same thing was going through all of our heads 'Great dragon gods what kind of horror is that?!'
Of course, we did not have too long to take in this situation, as it was soon after that the 'mother' had spotted us, reaching one of its tentacles up through the hole, which was conveniently situated about halfway to the ceiling of the massive room. We knew we had to act, and quickly.
"Our combined forces will not beat this creature," said Bilbo
Quote:
We backed away from the hole as Merlin climbed into a nook in the passageway, beckoning for his teammates to follow. There we stayed, quietly waiting and watching as the beast's tendril blindly felt around the passageway.
That's when Merlin spotted a nook in the creature's blindspot. "Guys," he whispered. "This way."
Quote:
Day 5 Recap:
The group hears a strange, constant sound through the night and decide to investigate it when they get up in the morning.
After wandering around for a while and hitting lots of dead ends, they eventually find a large chamber with several vents spewing dust, a low whirring of air audible.
They try poking their snouts into the vents to investigate further, but they can’t see anything past the dust.
Their explorations are interrupted by an increasingly loud humming vibrating through the air and soon the ground starts shaking before suddenly collapsing under their feet.
Hemlock, once again, manages to save his companions in midair thanks to his agility and deposits them safely in a nearby stable passage. The other two still aren’t sure how he managed it.
Once things settle a bit, they all decide to investigate the source of the loud, machine-like humming that’s still filling the cavern. Whisper, ever alert to any potential danger, safely leads them around the various exposed live wires now littering their way.
Finally they make it to an obviously manually-constructed room housing the most impressive and baffling machine they’ve ever seen, apparently still running.
After hours of careful observation, poking and prodding, and meticulous note-taking, they eventually decide to rest for the night and set up camp.

Fortunately, Hemlock easily stabilized himself mid-air, grabbing his companions and bringing us to the stable passage nearby.
Whisper was easily able to point out the dangerous places, making sure we were able to pass through this room without harm.

Oh look, the tiny spiral somehow manages to carry the two much bigger dragons again. XD I’d love to know how he does it!
And you know, I’m actually really surprised and impressed that five days in my dragons have still somehow managed to avoid any really disastrous situations. Madness hasn’t even had to beat anything up to save their butts, either! Go team! :D
