Imperial dragons are known for their striking visage. Dramatic smoke and crackle markings, shimmery or metallic scales, and imposing manes. A nest of imperial dragons can snowblind an unprepared spectator.
But not all imperials are born that way.
Across the flights, over the years, a pattern emerged that dismayed the beauty standards set by the original imperials, the children of Light: Simple, unassuming, uniform - a patterning that would almost have beauty in its understatement but for the startling, incongruous markings on the face and claws, like a besmirching mask.
In many flights, these dragons are politely averred from positions of prestige or power in the imperial hierarchy by dragons with shinier scales or more intricate markings. They tend to find themselves on low-level battling squads, roaming the midlands for small trinkets and tokens to bring back to their clan. Many of these dragons were content. But some longed for a home, and a comforting hierarchy to perch atop.
One day, a close-knit friend group of pointed dragons were exploring the Thunderhead Savannah when they came across a group of feliforms, the native sphinxes, but one was different:
The pointed dragons murmured amongst themselves. Though the sphinx rose no higher than their big toe, it nuzzled up to their leader, Toncen, making a strange vibrating noise. Toncen noted their similarities and felt a strange twinge, a calling. He announced that the sphinxes must be devotees, and the pointed dragons destined to be their rulers.
"Do you want to take the sphinx back to our den?" asked his mate, Cerpeti.
"No," he replied. "We'll bring the clan to them."
Thus, the pointed dragons settled in the Thunderhead Savannah among the sphinxes, who quickly welcomed the strange, large cats and their gifts of meat scraps. Toncen and Cerpeti established a standard that privileged the pointed, the stark, and the plain, in their own image. These small clans soon spread throughout the lands, wherever feliforms, and their strange likeness, could be found.
