The Hearth of Forge and Flame

The fae who started it all; the creator and the leader of The Court of Forge and Flame. A fae born from the purest of flames, he revels in the power and creativity of fire's power, and thus places it upon a pedestal above all others. A forgemaster of incredible skill, he has made it his mission to pass to his bloodline his trade secrets to secure wealth for his family and reinforce his position in history as one of the greatest smiths ever known. It is said that The Hearth once went by another name, but now he is only known by the name that his position entails.

The Ember of The Hearth

A fae who is fiery at heart but not by birth. She has little interest in the power dynamics at play in her family and has her attention turned outward, dedicated to influencing as many dragons as possible across the world. Her repressed need to dominate manifests in many forms, from forcing her ideals to manipulation that can bring dragons under her control. She is of great magical influence and uses her strange birthright of the spreading of multiple wings to showcase the power she and her descendants wield. Not particularly loyal to any individual in pursuit of strength, Wildfire is also known for many failed romantic endeavours.

????In ancient times, at the emergence of the world, dragons were considered to be monstrous, vile creatures who were just as mindless as any other creature that walked the earth. It took ages for dragons to organize themselves and construct societies of their own, since they were notoriously known for being unable to co-operate with one another. Dragons were greedy and hoarded their wealth and possessions, creating a swirling storm of conflict as they always tried to take what was thought to be most valuable off one another. This constant state of war was only fueled when a species of dragon, snake-like and cohesive in community emerged with the knowledge to make creations for themselves out of the raw gifts from the Earth. While the knowledge of carvings had been around for many generations, the art’s value had fluctuated greatly over time as a practice that any dragon could do. There was room to grow and create things far beyond the scope of any dragon then could image. The Coatls from The Flame learned one of these arts; metalworking, and their creations were unlike anything the world had seen. Many dragons then sought to take these treasures for themselves as usual, but there were some dragons who could see farther than just the current state of their hoard and recognized that these were skills to be learned. They were able to recognize that dragons were not born with this power to create in hand, and if the Coatls could learn it, so too could anyone else.
????A particular dragon, also born to The Flame, found himself undaunted by the means of which these new possessions were made and sought to learn the art of forging from these magnificent dragons. Though many coatls turned him away in hopes of keeping their newfound art for themselves, one day he was fated to find success by a small tribe on the Magmablood Rebuke, who were less concerned about guarding their secrets as they were about survival and finding success with what little means they had. Born of None with a clear connection to the flame stronger than many of them, the tribe agreed to teach him the basics of preparing metal. Very quickly the masterwork smiths saw a greater potential in their latest visitor whose small size and nimble fingers could achieve detail and a level of complexity in their work that others could not, and so the dragons who lived there pushed to strike a deal: he would remain with them to learn the greater art of forging, and in return he would make for them intricate jewellery and adornments unlike any they have made before. He agreed with no hesitation.
????For several years he remained, his skill bringing pleasantries and miseries to the tribe alike. Around them the presence of an Economy begun to form, and the small tribe of outcast dragons began to climb to new heights off the back of their visitor’s talents. The day came however where he outgrew the allies he had made, feeling that remaining could take him no further in his pursuit. By this time he was no longer the only non-coatl to have learned their precious art, masters and novices alike, but there were also other arts to have emerged that he had paid no attention to in his years of apprenticeship. With many new things to discover in the world and feeling there had to be a new and better way to establish himself, he left the tribe and took his knowledge with him in a journey to find the next thing to conquer.
????In recent days after moving from one place to the next and finding a world of skills he could never have imagined, he began to worry about his own legacy. Hoarding knowledge did not seem to be the way the world worked anymore, but there could never be anyone he could trust with the knowledge earned from his years of hardship. This craft was too beautiful and wondrous to be kept just for himself, but he was born alone into this world of savagery. After considering his position at length he decided that the only path forward was to create these trusted allies for himself. To do that he needed a mate, and in the end he found one. She laid out her ideas for establishing a stronghold of dragons to rival the communities they had all been a part of and way of in their lifetimes, arguing that the tribes that kept them must have once started from nothing themselves. She promised a glorious life of wealth, freedom, and power, and he was swayed with what she said they could accomplish, for she had strange abilities of her own unlike any he had ever seen. Gifts from the Arcane, she said, and whose power lies dormant even in you as a fellow Fae. As dragons both of great power, they had the opportunity to create something bigger than both of them: a court of dragons better than any the world had seen so far. That day, she named him The Hearth, for a dragon whose warmth was to be needed by many others to find the glory they both deserved. To their kin only would they bestow their knowledge and their power in hopes of forging the strongest fire dragons to fly on Sorineth to date, living together as The Court of Forge and Flame.
Since Fae dragons are an arcane species, they still maintain their ties to magic and the bloodline is thick with it. However since their founder has given himself completely to the flame, the magic abilities that are passed on are largely to do with fire. Fae who are more on the impure spectrum have been known to have magical abilities to be more random and less elemental.
The higher number of wings, the stronger the magic is that a dragon has. There is a direct link to the purity of a dragon and the number of wings it was born with, the two aspects working together to determine the overall strength of a fire fae. Dragons that are completely impure with the minimum amount of wings have been known to have no magic at all.
The creation of objects from metal is a founding block of the lineage. Since it is a coveted, special talent, a fae’s talent in forging
Those who are the purest are known to make the best delicate items, ranging to those who are completely impure who can only manage crude creations or even nothing at all. This is because being impure means a weak connection to the flame, therefore being unable to withstand heat like the others.
These fire fae place incredible value on any of their metal creations and significantly less on adornments made from other materials. They also value intricate work over large hunks of metal thanks to what the coatls believed about them. The fae are all aware of how important it is to keep the secrets of their skills away from other dragon and to teach others is the most traitorous thing a descendant of The Hearth could do, but they have no problems sharing their creations within their own family. Descendants who cannot or have no interest in forging for themselves are still happily adorned with the creations of their relatives, sometimes forcefully to show off their family’s status.
For anyone who might be struggling to come up with ideas for their new baby, here are some things I was keeping in mind while creating the thread.
- Dragons descendant from Wildfire have been known to have random power eruptions and rarely can change magic over time. The innate connections to Arcane through their mother and her volatile nature makes this possible.
- The Court of Forge and Flame is very family-oriented. The Hearth places a particular fondness for his descendants and encourages familial bonds.
- Since these dragons revere purity, there can be notable consequences to other dragons when making changes that might lower their status in the court after being established (ie, breed changes, tertiary gene change, scatterscroll).
- Some recommended occupations for fire fae finding their place in other lairs are: smiths, knights, mages, teachers, and leaders.
- The lore of The Court of Forge and Flame is a mix of Flight Rising canon and general fantasy, albeit a touch Dungeons and Dragons guided. While certain aspects are being observed like breeds emerging from their canon flights, a lot of the inner lore of the deities are overlooked due to The Court having its ruler-ship semi act in their place.
- The magic of a dragon via eye type is creatively malleable. For example, a fairly pure dragon with the right colours and genes born into the Water Flight may end up with extremely weak fire abilities, may have power over water instead, or their two natures are in such conflict with each other they may have no magic at all.
- Since The Court of Night and Shadow are based on fey, you can think of The Court of Forge and Flame as being based on dwarves.
