I accidentally fell in love with a random scry.. where no dragons exist at all with that color pattern. OOPS.
I would love to start a breeding project, but I have no idea where to start! I've never done one before! Any advice? :,D The colors are Eldritch/Spring/Spring, BUT, I'm also open to Oilslick/Spring/Spring

OKAY so I'm starting my first color breeding project lets go ehehe.
SO. GOALS:
1. ~~Get one [Eldritch/Spring/Spring]~~
2. Get a breeding pair of [Eld/Spr/Spr]
3. ALSO try to get an [Oilslick/Spring/Spring] or [X/Murk/Murk] while I'm at it.
4. Profit

You’re going to need to find two parents that have similar colors or the same. For eldritch you’d want one parent with obsidian and one parent with midnight in their primary if not eldritch. Then you’d need a combination of chartreuse and crocodile in their secondary and tertiary slots, or spring. Example: obsidian/chartreuse/crocodile and midnight/crocodile/chartreuse. As long as the colors are opposite the other parent. Ie: both parents can’t have crocodile in the same spot.

This would be the ideal combination assuming the exclusion of spring/eldritch since obsidian/midnight are closest to eldritch, and chartreuse/crocodile are closest to spring (one up, one down). You could also go for a wider range but then chances of getting your ideal bab are lower.

Genes…I can’t help you there….i would try to get the colors and then pay to gene them

I'm moreso concerned about what breeds to pick, like.. how on earth do I end up with a wildclaw if I may not be able to find one to start?

You just gotta look at what aspects of the project can be fixed with scrolls and what has to be done with breeding. Given how expensive and rare WC scrolls are, you’re better off trying to breed with a WC parent or just use the Ridgeback scry until you can get your hands in a WC scroll. (Edit: best odds is with a WC or coatl parent. Even a limited breed like a Noc or Imp is a 3% chance of a WC)

While it is ideal to get colors that are 1 or 2 off from your goal, sometimes they just don’t exist. Be flexible with your range. I’m personally willing to search for colors as far as 4 or 5 off from the one I want. As long as the parents are compatible and the colors you want are possible, you got a project. If you ended up with a pretty wide range, keep an eye out for something closer while you keep breeding. Maybe you’ll get a baby that’s really close then find another dragon that is able to breed with it for a smaller range.

Oh, and don’t just check the AH! Check Dragon Search as well. Sometimes you’ll find dragons in people’s fodder tabs with close colors. It never hurts to message them and ask if they would be willing to part with it!

My advice is: a) be sure to use the scrying workshop to assay bloodlines of any dragons before you buy them! If they're too closely related you can't breed them, obviously, and it sucks to buy a pair only to find out they're related. I have forgotten this step and had to totally re-plan my whole project. b) don't be afraid of messaging people to ask about a dragon in their lair. I've done several projects, and every single one of them I've had good luck by going on dragon search and looking for dragons in my desired range. It can be hard to tell if a dragon is for sale/the user might be open to selling them. If it's got lore or apparel, or is in a lair tab that seems important, I usually assume they're not for sale. But if it's clearly exalt fodder, I've found most people are receptive to selling. c) you can use[url=https://jiyoumcc.github.io/FlightRisingTool/] this tool[/url] to calculate the odds of a pair to produce your desired baby d) I don't usually worry about genes, as I find it's easier to buy the gene scrolls rather than try to find project dragons to breed that are both the right genes and have close colors. Sometimes finding the right colors alone is a pain, lol. The exception would be that wildclaw scry, for obvious gem-scroll reasons. Some people prefer breeding in the genes, but I feel like it's too much of a hassle. e) if you're not worried about having to buy a wildclaw scroll, try to have breeding parents of different breeds for that chance at a 5-egg nest. I like to have my project breeders be plentiful breeds for the shortest cooldown, but I'm really impatient lol f) I looked at dragon search and found a pair you could breed, it looks like the colors aren't terribly rare. You'll probably be able to get a pair with decent odds of hatching your goal. But if you wanted better odds, you can get multiple dragons in the range. Breed the 2 with the worst colors, then take the best baby from them and breed it to the next worst colored dragon. Then take that baby, so on and so fourth. It's important that you save the dragons with the best colors for last, because if you bred them first and then paired that baby to a dragon with worse colors, you'd just widen the range of colors the baby could have and obv that's. counterproductive. g) if your scries have eyes that don't match your nest, you can rent nests! @Redrose55x & @strawbebbyy I absolutely adore you both, this is so helpful *o* I totally was thinking you had to start with all breeder dragons involved- I hadn't considered searching during the breeding project, and pairing with hatches! Plus searching through fodder.. I can't help but feel rude when dm'ing people but I'll keep looking around like you both say. Also I would much rather not deal with buying a WC scroll.. that is a huge hassle I don't want haha.
