I made the Selchie Folk Subspecies after seeing a post on Tumblr that really tickled me. That's it. There's no super in depth, drawn out story as to why I made this subspecies, I just thought it'd be fun! And I hope you all think they're fun, too! Author's note: Despite going for a Water and Ice flight theming around the thread, keep in mind Selchies are meant to be accessible for anyone and everyone. Specific eye colors are not a requirement and I encourage you or anyone to get or breed a Selchie hailing from your favorite flight(s)!

waterv2.png Lore
The Selchie Folk (A.K.A Seal Folk) legend originates from clans within the Frigid Floes, though various versions of the same story can be found across all of Sornieth, most commonly originating from regions near large bodies of water, including, but not limited to lakes and, of course, the ocean itself.
While landlocked regions of land, such as most clans in Plague territories, have their own stories and legends of the Selchie Folk, they vary wildly from those in, say, Water or Ice territories.

Stories across the board seem to go vaguely as follows- A dragon comes across another, beautiful dragon, near the sea, and comes to find out that they aren't a dragon, not truly, at least, and are a Selchie in disguise.
While their name 'Selchie Folk' is literally translated to 'Seal Folk', they don't necessarily have that specific shape. As mentioned, depending on who or where you get your information from, the story changes. Some are Walruses, Porpoises, Mammertees, Depins.. The list goes on- As long as it can have a foot on land and a foot in the sea, there's a chance it could be a Selchie, the sole exception being Kelpies, as they are their own species all together.

One can prevent a Selchie from returning to the sea, by finding and hiding their true skin, though such an act usually will make the Selchie distraught and upset, never ceasing their search for the skin, no matter how happy they may be. The second they find their true skin, they will flee, leaving their family behind. This applies even if a bad actor makes the decision to hide an otherwise happy Selchie's skin, as the Selchie finds itself afraid of losing the ability to go wherever they please again.

icevs1.png Origins
Their origins are a bit of a mystery, though the oldest Selchie Folk all say that their great (ad infinitum) grandparents hailed from Arcane waters, learning basic transformation magics from watching the ancient Arcane dragons, and later navigated to the colder territories, of the Frigid Floes, where they further practiced their skills to soon become the progenitors of the Selchies we know today, slowly branching out across all of Sornieth.

watervs1.png History
Selchie Folk have only recently began integrating into dragon clans, and as such, their history has mostly been passed down through word of mouth, meaning it changes Selchie to Selchie, from grandparent, to parent, to child, though one thing, no matter what, remains the same among all the Selchies telling stories of Seal Folk long lost to time, and that is that they have always loved Sornieth, just the dragons do.

icevs1.png Anatomy
The Seal Folk have several anatomical abnormalities when compared to standard dragons- Most notably being webbed toes and 'fingers', even in breeds that would not normally have webbings. Additionally, Selchie descendants, those who's great grandparents, for example, were Selchie Folk, tend to have greenish-white skin, that formed cracks across their form, said cracks being described as having a 'fish-like odor' by those who come across said descendants.

watervs1.png Behaviors
The Selchie Folk are a playful bunch and are often found playing with their kin amongst the waters they hail from, quick to invite land-dwelling dragons who pass by to come partake in the revelry with them. They're quick to trust, but said trust is just as quickly, and easily, lost, turning into fear in more severe cases. They stay up late, and wake up early, getting about three to four-ish hours of sleep on average, something that can be deeply concerning for some of their clanmates. Finally, Selchie Folk will mate for life, being fiercely loyal and tender hearted partners, only fleeing their family should their skin be wrongfully stolen.

The following users are users who have volunteered to breed Selchies and/or were given a pair by me to breed.

I will be breeding and selling all types of Selchies in my Hatchery! Keep your eyes open here and on my thread for any updates!

Zach, a good friend of mine, will be handling Cupid Selchies primarily! Definitely give his lair a little peek sometime, you might even find Cupid Selchies that weren't from a Selchie pair in his sales tab, right now!

Simple placeholder text here.. It'll probably look better once I can write another blurb about a volunteer Selchie breeder, but, who's to say?~

Register as a Breeder
To register as a breeder, reach out via DMs specifying what type of Selchies you want to provide and show me the pair(s)- If they work, you're in and welcome to the Selchie Folk breeding program! If not, don't be discouraged and try again with a different pair some other time!

A Personal Request
Due to me wanting to make Selchies as accessible as possible for just about everyone, I'd greatly appreciate it if your prices didn't go past my own plan for pricing the Subspecies at 25kt/25g maximum per dragon.

However, due to Flight Rising's rules on dragon sales/ownership/etc, I cannot enforce this and I will not try to, as that would go against both site TOS and my own personal views on the matter.

I did this because I found a lot of Subspecies have an oddly high bar for entry with requirements and popularity (or lack thereof) making them very hard to get into because of the steep prices, intimidating lore or even minimum requirements to be considered for registry, such as Coli leveling, which can be a pain or further drain on your wallet if you're disabled. Additionally, I've found several very neat subspecies that no longer receive love from their creators or breeders due to them leaving the site, or are generally suffering from scarcity due to their lack of popularity, so! I had the idea to make the Selchie Folk, an abundant subspecies with little/no requirements, save colors (which have a pretty wide range including the variants, if I do say so myself!) and genes. Overall, I made this subspecies my 'perfect' subspecies. It has few restrictions, any flight/breed enjoyer can get into it with ease and make more of, again, with ease, and it doesn't burn the eyes when I have a headache or open the site early in the morning/late at night, and I can only hope that whoever's reading this loves these guys just as much as I do!
