The Serpentine do not deal finishing blows to their enemies themselves, their saliva is venomous and they use it to paralyse and decay their prey. This lets them have mass hunts with relatively minimal exertion, able to bite and move to the next. When discovered, there was an effort to move them into the more modern lives of Sorienth, but they were met with waves of resistance. The Serpentine had their culture, and they had no reason of such to leave. A few members of later generations moved outwards.

Serpentines | A Wildclaw Subspecies.
Old folktales tell of Wildclaws, lost deep in the deserts. They did not survive. Instead, they thrived, creating a city, a culture, their own breed of sorts. They changed, and they lived. As generations hatched, they were farther and farther away from the Wildclaws they once were. They declared themselves 'the Serpentine'. Many actual Serpentine dispise this folktale.

Lore.

Mirages are a staple of deserts, the curious bending of light on cold or hot air, forming a small puddle or a curious path. However, there have been reports of something bigger. “ Mirages'' of entire cityscapes, oceans in the middle of the desert, winding roads that expand until the edge of the world itself; this, of course, is not your average mirage. This is the work of the Serpentine, dragons emerging from the depths of Sorienth.

The Serpentine cause mirages of their own, one by itself can lead to an average faraway oasis or such, but many in their colonies form entire landscapes.
This ability is caused by the reflection of light or the hyptotizing patterns, of their lustrous wings, which they are able to control to appear as they wish it to. Each wing has a unique pattern, similar to fingerprints.

Serpentine are easily identifiable from other similarly-coloured dragons due to their size. They are typically half to one-fourth of the size of a Wildclaw, but their tails are long, muscled and flexible, good for quick maneuvering and balance.

Their size often leads them to form vast colonies, called a Quiver, to take on any enemies quickly and efficiently. These attacks are devastating due to their fangs and speed. They are quick, agile, lithe, and strategic; laying in wait underneath the sand. Using their lustre as a lure, they attract the unsuspecting creature towards them only to take their prey with an explosive burst from the ground.

Quivers have a heirarchy, and the way to choose the leader is suprisingly complex. The vibrancy of the green markings on their body, the length of their fangs, and the pattern of their wings all play a part in getting them nominated; the, typically four, Serpentine (2 Nitid and 2 Opiate) are then voted for by the Quiver members. The remaining two are then put to a test of skill, having to take down a large peice of prey by themselves without being allowed use of their their venom. The one successful then is the new leader.

Nitid Serpentine
When one talks about Serpentine, these are the dragons that come to mind. Shimmering wings with striking lustre. Suprisingly these wings are the recessive gene, so they are less common than the Opiate Serpentine, but are more effective for mirages.

Primary | Skink, Fade Clay-Soil + Chocolate.
Secondary | Constellation, Bee, Facet, Alloy, Shimmer Latte-Umber (No Ginger) + Jade-Thicket
Tertiary | Underbelly, Glimmer, Runes, Opal, Veined, Thylacine, Glowtail, Capsule, Filigree Driftwood-Chocolate + Jade-Thicket.

Opiate Serpentine
These Serpentine's wings do not shine as brilliantly, but have staggering patterns that can hypnotize the opponent. These wings are more common, as they are the dominant gene, but some patterns are less effective. The potency of the pattern is usually determined by the complexity.

Primary | Skink, Fade Clay-Umber + Chocolate.

Serpentines take great pride in art. They carve stories into stone and bone, decorate the entrances to their Quiver's dens with hand-made chimes and charms, and gifts. Gifts are a massive part of Serpentine society, and the shinier the better. This includes ores, polished stones, trinkets, and jewelry plucked right of the unsuspecting dragon.

Biological Lore & Other Traits
 • Apart from the aforementioned size differences from this subspecies and their better known kin, Serpentine have other physical distinctions as well. Their form is more, as the name suggests, serpentine, their bodies and tails longer and more flexible. This flexibility is also aided by their joints, which connect in such a way where they can squeeze in (and out) of places that would look impossible.
 • Since Serpentine live in tunnel systems under the ground, their front talons and arms are stronger to enable them to dig more efficiently. Underground is dark, and the majority of Serpentines have not adapted for night vision, so they use a lantern on their tails, which are surprisingly dexterous, for sight.
 • Serpentines cannot actually fly, as their wings are far to weak to lift them into the air from the ground. Somewhere along the evolutionary line, flying just stopped being a priority. Instead they glide, climbing onto high points and leaping off, wings outstretched; this can actually carry them decent distances. This gliding can be used for many different purposes, from practicalities like crossing gorges to more recreational activities, like gliding-races.
 • These dragons are very much ambush predators, prefering to lay in wait. The most common way of doing this is simply in bushes, but experienced hunters use another strategy. Covering their body with their wings; this forms an illusion of plain ground, when done correctly, and can fool most prey. True masters of the art of hunting can lay in plain sight, or even move around their target, without being spotted once.

Special Eye Lore
 • Facet: Though these eyes look as though the dragon would be blind, the situation is quite the opposite. The better word to use would be compound eyes. Watching these dragons hunt is slightly unnerving, even seeing them live their lives, as they do not have to turn their heads at all; their eyes are able to see forward, both sides, and some parts behind them, giving then a 270 degree vision.
 • Goat: Horizontal pupils are similar to faceted eyes, perhaps an evolutional attempt to have the same effect. However, their vision is not as broad, their backs being their blindspots. Some Serpentine find Goat eyed dragons to be unwanted or a sign of what could've been, and don't bother with raising them. Others think of them as a blessing and hold them highly, though where this more positive ideal came from is unknown.
 • Swirl: The purpose of the Swirl eyes is fairly unknown, not giving the dragons any true perks. These eyes are most common in Opiate Serpentines, often moving in more elaborate patterns than typical during hunting, and even in their day-to-day lives. Their vision is distorted and they rely on recognizable colours to survive. Typically, they don't.
 • Dark Sclera: The black sclera of these eyes is used for reducing the glare of the sun; their eyes also have translucent film that can cover their eyes seperately from their eyelids, enabling them to still see in sand-storms or other difficult weather. For obvious reasons, these dragons make for excellent guards. Despite this, these dragons struggle greatly to make out details and colours, mainly seeing shapes. This often leads them to become slightly face-blind, not being able to discern between their quivermates.
 • Glowing: The world from these eyes is as bright as they look. Details and colours and enchanced to the maximum, every small movement is easily picked up by these dragons. Unfortunately, this is terrible for the sunlight, as the glare on their eyes makes everything nearly indistinguishable. These dragons are often night guards or night hunters instead.
 • Multi-Gaze: A struggle to raise and a great reward when fully grown, Serpentines with Multi-Gaze are held highly in their society. The many eyes can be a labourous task for hatchlings to grow up, often having too much stimuli being sent to their brains at once. With patience and care they grow up to be valuable hunters.
 • Innocent: Wide, slightly unsettling eyes of thermal vision, these dragons are the most optimized hunters. Their pupils dialate and contract depending on the visual light levels around them to bring in infared light better. They are excellent at detecting prey, but not as good at discerning predator from prey from friend.
 • Primal: Surprisingly, Primal eyes are looked down upon in Serpentine culture. The elemental gaze does not aid them in their hunting, and there are even superstitions that bringing a Primal-eyed dragon with you on a hunt will bring bad luck. Dragons outside of the Serpentine species would not know, but many primal hatchlings are killed. More recent Quivers have regected this killing.

Culture

Clothing
*you are not at all limited to what is on this post, feel free to dress your serpentines however you like!*
 • The wings of a Serpentine are something that these dragons take great pride in. They are not to be covered up, only enhanced through various different shining jewelries. Hunters decorate with a mix of ornaments and skulls or remains of their prey.
 • Proper clothing is not popular among Serpentine, they prefer for their clothing to be loose and breathable. Often they wear simple tatters and rags to allow themselves maximum flexibility.
Art
 • Serpentines are surprisingly artistic, painting out many different activities that they take part in daily. Quiver tunnel systems are covered with drawings of Quiver hunts, various animals and other creatures, and even other dragons that they might've seen at a distance. These drawings are very simple and geometric.
 • While Serpentines hunt easily and quickly, they have a great respect for death. Quiver tunnels have an altar of various stones, each stone a sign of respect for the animals that died for them. Unfortunately this tradition has started being forgotten and neglected by the Quivers without the elders to pass on the knowledge.
