Riyo is the Morning Roses' captain of the guard. She's no nonsense, unflappable, cynical, and the unwilling foster mother of Ruby, an eternally youthful Banescale. Riyo earned her spot as captain with blood, sweat, hard work and determination, and only those who truly impress her on a combat level ever even make it into the guard. That said, her work is still cut out for her considering almost everyone who applies is some sort of rowdy young adult

Spectre is the leader of a whole other guard affiliated with the clan: The Starlight Guard, a pack of Mirrors inhabiting the Hewn City, guarding travelers from the dark terrors that lie within the ruins. Spectre isn't much for talking, no one's ever even heard his voice, and lets his actions do all the speaking. He's stealthy, harder to impress than even Riyo (it's three strikes and you're out with him, so there's no room for slackers on the Starlight Guard), and as fierce a warrior as they come. One has to be in order to survive against the darkness.

Shan may be a fandragon, but she's still one of the stronger fighters amongst the Roses' Thorns. She's not the "capture and contain" sort of Gaoler, rather, she takes her job as Seeker to be more "search and destroy". Her charge is shedding light upon this world darkened by the Shade, and as such the Shade must be eliminated.
Don't let her more stoic and ferocious attitude fool you, though. She's a socially awkward and agreeable character who loves cats.
