Graveyard Guardian
As we all know, The Plaguebringer loathes the undead. Despite, or perhaps because of this, millions of plaguelings practice necromancy. What is a god to do? Well, if you’re The Filthy One, you corrupt the newly-migrating Gaolers and adapt them until they’re perfect for withstanding the Wasteland and keeping pesky necromancers at bay. When threats and pestilence don’t work, a hulking dragon modeled after the terrifying Graveyard Guardian of old just might do the trick.

Most Graveyard Gaolers interpret The Plaguebringer’s disdain for Emperors as extending to all undead, and seek to cull, contain, and prevent more undead from being formed. They take their job very seriously, and many genuinely believe that the existence of the undead is a blight upon the world.

They have stronger forequarters than hindquarters, with a slightly sloping back. They have a deeper skull and shorter face than most Gaolers, and many have short tails and short, rounded ears. Graveyard Gaolers can also have a white or cream "v"-shaped marking on their chests. Their front paws are extremely strong with long claws, useful for digging graves, searching for roots and tubers, and subduing struggling undead. Their paws are surprisingly dexterous as well, with many Graveyard Gaolers being able to open jars, doorknobs, and bottle caps. Graveyard Gaolers are capable of standing or even walking for short distances on their hind legs. Their running speed is slower than most Gaolers, as their chosen prey the undead tend to be slow, but they are still capable of terrifying bursts of speed when charging. Despite being inspired by the Graveyard Guardian bear (as well as their large size), Graveyard Gaolers are pursuit predators and are tireless and implacable as the hordes of undead they hunt. They have large molars for cracking open bones, which comprise much of their diet. Graveyard Gaolers have famously strong stomachs and varied diets and will eat almost anything, including (but not limited to): carrion (including undead that are still kicking), fresh meat, roots, tubers, fish, maggots, honey, berries, grass, and garbage. They have a natural resistance to the bacteria found in corpses as they decompose, as well as many undead or "zombie" viruses, and some can even drink water contaminated by viruses and bacteria with little visible effects. None have been brave enough to attempt drinking from The Wyrmwound, though. Graveyard Gaolers are covered in shaggy black or brown fur, which protects them both from the elements and the bites of the undead. Their fur is shaggy with long, coarse guard hairs and a dense undercoat, and it is said that despite their rough outercoat, a Graveyard Gaoler's tummy fur is one of the softest places in the world. Graveyard Gaolers use their natural armaments (antlers, claws, teeth, elemental attacks, and in the case of dragons with Shardflank, Scorpion, and Gnarlhorns, their extra weaponry) to subdue undead and necromancers alike. Graveyard Gaolers with Shardflank, Scorpion, or Gnarlhorns will impale smaller undead and necromancers on their antlers or spikes for transport back to the graveyard-and as a warning. Even dragons without spines will get in on the fun, wearing spiked armor and collars both to protect against undead bites and to impale. This practice led to the nickname of "Shrikebears". A Graveyard Gaoler's strongest sense is their sense of smell, and especially canny individuals are said to be able to estimate the exact date a corpse died by the smell of decomposition. Plague Primals are especially valued as it is believe they are avatars of Her will and often are trained early as religious and political leaders. These dragons are often incredibly magically powerful, at the cost of a life of their own. [/columns] Glowing [columns][Item=Vial of Glowing Sight] Not all dragons are born great: some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. Dragons who prove themselves exceptional enough to gain attention and divine missions from the gods may have glowing eyes imposed upon them. They may be exceptional military or religious leaders, but most are everydragons given lonely missions by their gods. These dragons have exceptional night vision and are often ferocious Seekers. The suspicion they face from their clanmates is more than worth their new abilities. [/columns] Innocent [columns][Item=Vial of Naivety] Dragons with Innocent eyes, despite their large, sweet-looking eyes, are just as intimidating as their fellows. Their glassy shining eyes can entrance undead and living dragons alike. When you stare into the eldritch, the eldritch stares back. Worryingly common among Shadow, Light, and Arcane dragons. [/columns] Multi-Gaze [columns][Item=Vial of Disjointed Sight] Multi-gaze dragons are often used as scouts, Seekers, Sentries, and seers. They are nicknamed “panopticons of the graveyard”. Their eyes do little good in conjunction with Scorpion and Shardflank, as their extraneous eyes embed in the bony tissue and quickly become injured or infected. Especially powerful individuals can summon swarms of bees and wasps of multiple species. [/columns] Goat [columns][Item=Vial of Horizontal Sight] Goat-eyed Graveyard Gaolers have a wide field of peripheral vision and an uncanny ability to detect movement, making them almost impossible to sneak up on. They make ideal Sentries and Keepers. However, they do have a tendency to involve themselves in unholy rituals. [/columns] Common [columns][item=Vial of Tempered Sight] Common eyes are the most common eyes for Graveyard Gaolers, but no less beautiful for it. Plague and Ice Common eyes are considered the most beautiful among the common eyes. [nextcol][/columns] SOCIETY AND CULTURE Graveyard Guardian society follows much of the rest of Gaoler society, with five orders; however, the emphasis here is on containing undead rather than The Shade. Depending on the sect or region, there may be more smaller orders than just the five orders: Seeker, Sentry, Keeper, Overseer, Sentinel. In addition, Graveyard Guardians are choosing to pay The Icewarden and The Dripcave Dregs less and less regard, with very few Graveyard Gaolers ever becoming Sentinels or even traveling to the Southern Icefield at all. This was a conscious decision made by Graveyard Gaoler society in favor of containing the undead scourge instead, and a controversial one-Gaolers inside and outside of the Graveyard Gaolers have called this heresy and dereliction of duty. Graveyard Gaolers are very fatalist in their outlook, partially to cope with the sheer amount of death they are subjected to. Living in the Scarred Wasteland is plenty dangerous enough, even for dragons adapted to it, and culling the undead and necromancers is even more so. Death is a constant companion to a Graveyard Gaoler, and many parents introduce their children to death early by teaching their hatchlings to read by using epitaphs on tombstones or sleeping in open graves. This practice of teaching hatchlings to read using epitaphs means Graveyard Gaolers have some of the highest literacy rates of any Plague dragons. Graveyard Gaolers are mostly solitary or live in small family groups, and families will often guard one cemetery for generations. Graveyard Gaolers are devoted parents, with young hatchlings often riding on their parents' backs as they go about their duties. It is a sad day for all involved when the hatchlings become too big to carry. Graveyard Gaolers enjoy spending time with their families, and long morning ambles through the graveyard, telling stories, singing, fishing, wrestling, and enjoying the scenery are all common family bonding activities. Graveyard Gaoler families do not have to be biologically related, with many adopting foundlings, orphans, or individuals in mourning of any species. Graveyard Gaolers are extremely protective of their families; it is said the most dangerous place in the world is between a Graveyard Gaoler and its family. Graveyard Gaolers are typically insular and prefer interacting with their own kind in small groups. Many have difficulty interacting with individuals outside the Graveyard Gaoler community, and some sects outright discourage any interaction with other dragons or beastkin, on the grounds they may become undead and therefore would be destroyed-no point in getting attached. However, some sects encourage interaction with the wider community, and some Graveyard Gaolers (especially in urban communities or small towns) become fixtures of their communities, both respected and feared. It is difficult to make friends with a Graveyard Gaoler due to their shyness, awkwardness, and the fact they are expected to kill you should you become undead, but should you worm your way into their tender, fluffy hearts, you will have a friend for life...and not a moment after. To cope with their hard lives and the many grieving dragons and beastkin they encounter, Graveyard Gaolers frequently use extremely dark gallows humor-though never in front of the bereaved-and delight in using death, bear, or Plague-related puns and jokes. However, many struggle with depression, burnout, PTSD, and many mental issues and illnesses due to nature of their work. Graveyard Gaolers take immense pride in themselves and their work, to the point where some believe they are simply better than other dragons (but what dragon in Sorneith doesn't believe that?) They see themselves as THE DIVINE WILL OF THE PLAGUEMOTHER, HER CRUSHING CLAW, TO CULL AND CONTAIN ALL UNDEAD. Many Graveyard Gaolers believe they have the divinely appointed authority from their god to do anything necessary to fulfill their duties. Especially zealous, self-important, unscrupulous, or hungry Graveyard Gaolers will sometimes request or steal food from other dragons on the grounds that they are owed the food needed to complete their divine mission. This kleptoparisitism, though rare, makes the species rather unpopular among individuals or clans that have had their food requisitioned. Much more common (though still rare), is Graveyard Gaolers confiscating bodies if they believe there is a high risk of necromancer activity in the area, which can make planning funerals in the Scarred Wasteland dicey. Graveyard Gaolers will sometimes even resort to outright grave robbery and cannibalism if they believe that there is a credible risk of necromancer activity-a Graveyard Gaoler was arrested by the Dragonhome Preservation Guild for partially eating a mummy and the contents of a canopic jar to prevent them being used in a necromantic ritual. There is a cultural divide between rural Graveyard Gaolers and urban Graveyard Gaolers-the urban ones are typically far friendlier to outsiders and become fixtures in their communities in roles such as coroner, mortician, gravedigger, grief counselor, administrator, and even occasionally becoming involved in local politics. Several Graveyard Gaoler clans and organizations also offer low-cost or free burial and cremation services, providing dignified death care to those who may otherwise not have access to it. Urban Graveyard Gaolers are far more likely to take mates and friends outside their subspecies-many meet their future spouses or best friends from among the many mourners attending their dead. Graveyard Gaolers will sometimes recruit other dragon species, especially Mirrors, Obelisks, Guardians, and Tundras to help them chase and capture undead. Their task is usually to pursue fast or flying undead and hold it until the Graveyard Gaoler can arrive to finish it off. These dragons are known as Gravehounds, and they typically dress in a manner that resembles Graveyard Gaolers. Longneck, Talonok, Centaurs, Harpies, and occasionally Serthis and Maren may also be recruited. Serthis are more rarely recruited because it's difficult to replace a trained undead-hunting Serthis after they are killed in a purge; Maren because most dragons cannot breathe underwater or speak Maren. Corven are favorites to work with because of their intelligence and death-obsessed character, so they and Graveyard Gaolers get along very well. Graveyard Gaolers cast a long shadow in their native Flight. In addition to guarding it from undead and serving in its militaries and civil service, they also serve a religious and cultural role in the flight. Its members are pallbearers for prominent Plague dragons and sentinels at their tombs. Graveyard Gaolers guard the greatest assembly in the Plague Flight, and many see them as the embodiment of the Flight's greatest virtues. Every year, all the Graveyard Gaolers gather at the Hellwell Undercroft for a conference a week before Riot of Rot to discuss undead hunting techniques, theology, gossip, eat, and socialize. In addition, Graveyard Gaolers of any age (but especially the young'uns eager to show off) can participate in the Trial of the Pit, and Plague dragons gather from miles around to watch. The Pit is a large fighting pit in the center of the Hellwell Undercroft, ringed with bone spires around the top edge, and is designed such that it is extremely difficult to exit without assistance. During the Trial, Graveyard Gaolers are pitted against undead, giving them a chance to improve themselves and prove their worth. A fan favorite to watch (and the most dangerous for all involved) are the boar fights, where a Graveyard Gaoler is pitted against an Undying Featherback. Champions of the Pit gain glory, bragging rights, and the right to gorge themselves sick on whatever food they like afterwards. The Pit serves a darker purpose, however. Penitent Ressurectionists are forced to undergo The Undying Torment, where they are forced to fight successive waves of undead until they either drop dead of exhaustion, dehydration, blood loss, infection, or despair, or until their tormenters run out of undead. If they survive, they are allowed to rejoin Graveyard Gaoler society. The longest surviving penitent defeated the Torment after over a month in the pit, but ultimately died of infection. THE FIVE GREAT ORDERS [columns][nextcol]Order: Seeker The most far-traveling Graveyard Gaoler order, Seekers typically specialize in capturing or culling either necromancers or the undead, although some specialize in both or hunt The Shade in addition to the other two scourges. Seekers are the Graveyard Gaolers most frequently encountered outside of graveyards and other burial places. Most Graveyard Gaolers are homebodies and dislike traveling too far from their Graveyards, so these dragons often receive care packages from their stationary friends and relatives. [nextcol][Item=Dread Dancer Spikescarf][/columns] [columns][nextcol]Order: Sentry Sentries often guard small graveyards, shrines, or outskirts of larger cemeteries or garrisons. Like their mainstream Gaoler counterparts, they are the first line of defense against intruders such as body snatchers and necromancers, and the last line of defense against escapees. To mourners coming to grieve for their loved ones, they are intimidating but polite sentinels. [nextcol][item=Plasmpool Spikescarf][/columns] [columns][nextcol]Order: Keeper Keepers manage mid-size cemeteries, typically in towns or small cities. They also keep records of all the dead buried in their cemetery, the location of the graves, their names, date of burial, and cause of death, as well as all other records for the Graveyard Gaolers as a whole. They are also responsible for building defenses for their cemeteries to keep undead in, and maintaining burial grounds. [nextcol][Item=Tar-Trap Spikescarf][/columns] [columns][nextcol]Order: Overseer The typical highest rank for a Graveyard Gaoler, Overseers manage large cemeteries and burial grounds, and all the Graveyard Gaolers in a certain region. They also contain the largest and most monstrous undead, and manage responses to large-scale undead outbreaks. [nextcol][item=Fiendflesh Spikescarf][/columns] [columns][nextcol]Order: Sentinel The rarest order for a Graveyard Gaoler to join. Most just don't see the point in abandoning The Great Hunt to join an honor guard to guard a pillar fragment in The Southern Icefield when the undead scourge is a much more active threat. Despite the increasing disregard for The Icewarden, most Graveyard Gaolers still consider joining this order to be a great honor...and a great impracticality. [nextcol][Item=Voidfollow Spikescarf][/columns] LOCALIZED ORDERS AND SOCIETIES Graveyard Gaolers frequently form localized orders and suborders, both for companionship and to better combat the threats of their region. Here are some of the most popular, though there are dozens. [columns][Item=Sundial Imposter][nextcol]Bruins of the Ruins: An order located in Dragonhome and the Sunbeam Ruins, this order is the richest and most flashy Graveyard Gaoler society. They commonly wear gold jewelry or precious stones and host charity galas to raise money to fund cemeteries, crematoriums, and other funerary services. Lately, most of their money has been going to victims of Luminax. Members of this order tend to be Coffinist and Bruins. [/columns] [columns]Emperor's Knell: An order of death, dedicated to killing Luminax. They haven't succeeded yet, and their failed attempts are a serious drain on Graveyard Gaoler numbers. Members are either death seekers, glory hounds, criminals, dragons looking to regain their honor, or barely-adults who haven't figured out they can die yet. Despite this, this order features prominently in Graveyard Gaoler culture and is highly valorized, even worshipped.[nextcol][/columns] [columns][item=Hellhound][nextcol]Hellwell Hellhounds: Security and honor guard for the Hellwell Undercroft and Blight Sanctum. Mostly Kirkyard Grims and hardcore Cremationists. The division also saw combat with Plague's Exalt Services during several dominance battles, and there are few better places in the Scarred Wasteland to hear war stories. A little too fond of bioweapons, heavy metal, and arson. [/columns] [columns]Starwood Sleuth: A reclusive casket of Graveyard Gaolers in the Starwood Strand and Forbidden Portal entrance, these sleepy scholars guard Sorneith from undead and extraterrestrial threats alike. They also dabble in knowledge otherwise considered...heretical, including the processes and habits of necromancers and undead, but nothing too terrible has occurred...yet. The only Gaoler order that specializes in performing exorcisms and seances.[/columns] RELIGION AND SECTS Most Graveyard Gaolers are highly religious and most are devoted to The Plaguebringer, even if they were born outside the Plague Flight. This is especially true for dragons born to Plague parents. A central tenant of Graveyard Gaoler theology is that The Great Hunt, the directive to cull and contain undead, is a divine mission ordered by The Plaguebringer herself. (The actual scripture and the language The Filthy One used is more ambiguous on the matter). As a general rule, Graveyard Gaolers love theological debates, and such debates can get rather heated. Most debates are polite, respectful affairs, though is not unheard of for a debate to reach a pitch where two rivals explode at each other, "HERETIC!", only to immediately apologize and swear never to dishonor each other in such a way again...only for a repeat performance to occur at the next meeting. The two most common sects for Graveyard Gaolers are Cremationism and Coffinism. These two sects originally had better names, but these are the ones that stuck. Cremationist, or "hardline" Graveyard Gaolers believe in culling all undead; Coffinists believe in containing non-malicious undead and culling the rest. The two sects see each other as a pack of heretics-Cremationists see Coffinists as willfully misinterpreting The Great Hunt to protect their little undead friends, allowing these abominations to blight the land, while Coffinists see Cremationists as impractical and dogmatic at best and bloodthirsty fanatics at worst. Cremationist and Coffinists are not the only Graveyard Gaoler sects; lively and spirited theological thought, isolation, and nothing better to do with their time in the graveyard have spawned dozens of Graveyard Gaoler sects. All the sects hate necromancers however, and many Graveyard Gaoler clans believe they have permission to arrest or even kill necromancers caught in the act on sight. This can bring them into conflict with clans and flights that tolerate or even encourage necromancy: what looks to a Graveyard Gaoler like "stopping an abominable ritual" and "purging a heretic" looks to other clans like "kidnapping" and "murder". This is especially true in the Earth Flight, and Graveyard Gaolers are actually banned from some areas in the Cairnstone Rest. How a Graveyard Gaoler thinks of other dragons with different religious beliefs than it depends on the individual, but generally it follows this pattern: Heretic-A dragon who picks and chooses part of Plague theology the dragon in question doesn’t like (usually another Plague dragon or Graveyard Gaoler). Apostate-A Graveyard Gaoler who disregards The Great Hunt (not always a bad thing, some Graveyard Gaolers take careers outside of hunting or containing undead and guarding resting places and are still considered valuable members of their communities). Blasphemer-A dragon who blasphemes The Plaguebringer, The Great Hunt, the Plague Flight, or, even worse, taints themselves with the Shade or necromancy, often both. Resurrectionist-The worst of the worst. A Graveyard Gaoler who has completely turned their back on The Great Hunt, The Plaguebringer, and themselves and actively profanes all of these by engaging in necromancy. Revenants-Undead Graveyard Gaolers, whether by the twisted hand of some necromancer or the deceased's own undying will to continue their mission. Resurrection by a necromancer is the greatest possible insult for a Graveyard Gaoler. Mostly regarded as pitiable creatures, the most common fate for these abominations is destruction at the paws of their comrades. There are rumors of Resurrectionist cults, but currently these are only horrible rumors...right? FASHION, ART, AND AESTHETICS Unlike most Gaolers, Graveyard Gaolers enjoy the decorative arts and enjoy wiling the long hours in the graveyard making art. Death-related forms of art, such as obituary-writing, flower arranging, coffinmaking, stonecarving (for purposes of tombstones, mausoleums, and sarcophagi), as well as death-related visual and literary art are all common artistic disciplines. They also enjoy looking good and intimidating, which mean the same thing to many Graveyard Gaolers. Possession and care of comfort objects, especially those created by loved ones, helps Graveyard Gaolers cope with their grim duty. They overwhelmingly favor unambiguously living familiars. These are far from the only familiars a Graveyard Gaoler may have, but they are the most common. LAIRS Graveyard Gaolers are most common in Plague, Earth, Shadow, and Light, but can be found anywhere with an undead problem. Most Graveyard Gaolers use existing death-related, military, or religious structures for their lairs, such as monuments, cathedrals, chapels, shrines, sanctums, mortuaries, ossuaries, mass gravesites, old battlefields, barrows, creepy old mansions, castles, funeral parlors, etc. but unusually for Gaolers, some Graveyard Gaolers build their own shelters. Since many Graveyard Gaoler lairs are constructed around places of death, their lairs are said to be inherently haunted and cursed. Some lairs can even be quite homey, and can have furniture and other possessions inside: common decor includes furs and pelts, bones, textiles, candles, lanterns, bells, books, creepy dolls, taxidermy, and anything with the Plaguebringer's emblem on it. Sometimes the remains of undead, necromancers, or even respected Graveyard Gaolers are used as decoration. However, most are the equivalent of groundskeeper's sheds, containing only the equipment needed to maintain a graveyard. Due to their large size, Graveyard Gaolers tend to live in large buildings or sleep out in the open (their thick coats mean they can tolerate the elements well). TACTICS Despite their fearsome reputation and the god that made them, most Graveyard Gaolers are peaceable creatures when unprovoked, content to survey their consecrated domains and the tombs within them. Graveyard Gaolers chiefly rely on intimidation to keep intruders out of their graveyards. They deliberately hide in fog or shadows, waiting for the intruder to realize they're being watched. The sight of a dark shape with antlers and glowing eyes lurking in the gloom is usually more than enough for an interloper to turn tail and flee. If the interloper stands their ground (or is too frozen to move) the Graveyard Gaoler makes huffing or growling noises, stomps the ground with its forepaws, or mock charges. If this is still not effective, the Graveyard Gaoler charges. Despite their awkward gait and slow distance running speed, Graveyard Gaolers are terribly fast when sprinting and can quickly build up a horrifying amount of momentum, resembling a large furry landslide with antlers at full tilt. Luckily, targets are typically only chased to the cemetery gates. This courtesy is not extended to body snatchers or necromancers caught in the act, who are typically killed and disemboweled on sight, then thrown into a grave and buried alive. Graveyard Gaolers are highly sought after for Plague's Exalt Services and by the many warlords who roam the Scarred Wasteland for their loyalty, intelligence, and ferocity. (The fact that most are literate in the majority semi-literate Scarred Wasteland doesn't hurt either.) Graveyard Gaolers have excellent memories, especially olfactory memories, and are commonly recruited as trackers, tacticians, and quartermasters in addition to frontline warriors. The favorite weapons of a Graveyard Gaoler are their claws and antlers, but individuals with Shardflank, Gnarlhorns, or Scorpion will ram their opponents as well. A full-grown Graveyard Gaoler is more than strong enough to swat the head off of a medium-sized dragon with one blow of its paw. When they catch an opponent or quarry, they attempt to knock over and pin and opponent with their front paws and weight while delivering bites to the head and face. Crushing the skull with the paws or jaws is a favorite finishing move. Graveyard Gaolers do have several weaknesses, however. First, they can't fly, which means that flying enemies can rain down attacks from above or escape, although that doesn't stop especially stubborn Graveyard Gaolers pursuing flying rivals until they are forced to land from sheer exhaustion. Their slow(er) running speed and lack of a tail means that other dragons can outrun and outmaneuver them, and their momentum when sprinting means that it is very hard for Graveyard Gaolers to stop or turn sharply. In addition, their specialization of fighting undead and necromancers means that a Graveyard Gaoler only trained to fight undead can struggle to hold its own against living dragons, beastkin, and monsters. [*]Graveyard Gaolers are known for their love of honey, with some less scrupulous individuals even taking bribes of honey from necromancers or body snatchers for access to their graveyards. Other individuals even keep bees in their graveyards, as being chased by a swarm of angry bees is always a deterrent to graverobbing. [*]A Graveyard Gaoler with a long tail is known as a "Callisto". [*]A group of Graveyard Gaolers is known as a "casket" or "sleuth". PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Graveyard Gaolers look like most Gaolers with a few key differences.

These dragons are born for greatness. Plague Primals are especially valued as it is believe they are avatars of Her will and often are trained early as religious and political leaders.

These dragons are often incredibly magically powerful, at the cost of a life of their own.

Glowing
Vial of Glowing Sight
Not all dragons are born great: some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. Dragons who prove themselves exceptional enough to gain attention and divine missions from the gods may have glowing eyes imposed upon them. They may be exceptional military or religious leaders, but most are everydragons given lonely missions by their gods.

Dragons with Dark Sclera have dabbled too deeply in dark rituals in exchange for strange powers. These dragons have exceptional night vision and are often ferocious Seekers. The suspicion they face from their clanmates is more than worth their new abilities.

Innocent
Vial of Naivety
Dragons with Innocent eyes, despite their large, sweet-looking eyes, are just as intimidating as their fellows. Their glassy shining eyes can entrance undead and living dragons alike. (Idea by Strangeflesh)

Graveyard Gaolers with swirl’d eyes have absorbed forbidden knowledge dragonkind was never meant to know. When you stare into the eldritch, the eldritch stares back. Worryingly common among Shadow, Light, and Arcane dragons.

Multi-Gaze
Vial of Disjointed Sight
Multi-gaze dragons are often used as scouts, Seekers, Sentries, and seers. They are nicknamed “panopticons of the graveyard”. Their eyes do little good in conjunction with Scorpion and Shardflank, as their extraneous eyes embed in the bony tissue and quickly become injured or infected.

Gaolers with Faceted eyes have a special connection with insects, and are excellent at finding honey and hives. Especially powerful individuals can summon swarms of bees and wasps of multiple species.

Goat
Vial of Horizontal Sight
Goat-eyed Graveyard Gaolers have a wide field of peripheral vision and an uncanny ability to detect movement, making them almost impossible to sneak up on. They make ideal Sentries and Keepers. However, they do have a tendency to involve themselves in unholy rituals.

Dragons with Pastel eyes are often extremely photosensitive and are regarded as sickly, and may have additional eye issues. Plague individuals appear to have an eternal case of pinkeye. Many wear dark goggles, sunglasses, or even eye masks or blindfolds to cope with their photosensitivity.

Bright
Vial of Brilliant Sight
Dragons with Bright eyes are known for their legendary vim and vigor. They frequently have intense personalities, high energy, and strong theological opinions.

Dragons with Rare eyes, especially Lightning, Earth, and Plague are regarded as being among the most beautiful Graveyard Gaolers. Extremely dark or extremely light eyes are favored.

Unusual eyes are also among the most beautiful eyes for a Graveyard Gaolers. Again, extremely light or dark eyes are favored, as they can contrast or blend in with a Graveyard Gaoler’s dark coat. Plague and Earth eyes are favored.

SOCIETY AND CULTURE

Graveyard Guardian society follows much of the rest of Gaoler society, with five orders; however, the emphasis here is on containing undead rather than The Shade.

THE FIVE GREAT ORDERS
TSAm8tZ.png Order: Seeker
The most far-traveling Graveyard Gaoler order, Seekers typically specialize in capturing or culling either necromancers or the undead, although some specialize in both or hunt The Shade in addition to the other two scourges. Seekers are the Graveyard Gaolers most frequently encountered outside of graveyards and other burial places. Most Graveyard Gaolers are homebodies and dislike traveling too far from their Graveyards, so these dragons often receive care packages from their stationary friends and relatives.
Dread Dancer Spikescarf
1P2d9Pp.png Order: Sentry
Sentries often guard small graveyards, shrines, or outskirts of larger cemeteries or garrisons. Like their mainstream Gaoler counterparts, they are the first line of defense against intruders such as body snatchers and necromancers, and the last line of defense against escapees. To mourners coming to grieve for their loved ones, they are intimidating but polite sentinels.
Plasmpool Spikescarf
4nIr7Xx.png Order: Keeper
Keepers manage mid-size cemeteries, typically in towns or small cities. They also keep records of all the dead buried in their cemetery, the location of the graves, their names, date of burial, and cause of death, as well as all other records for the Graveyard Gaolers as a whole. They are also responsible for building defenses for their cemeteries to keep undead in, and maintaining burial grounds.
Tar-Trap Spikescarf
AGoy0oZ.png Order: Overseer
The typical highest rank for a Graveyard Gaoler, Overseers manage large cemeteries and burial grounds, and all the Graveyard Gaolers in a certain region. They also contain the largest and most monstrous undead, and manage responses to large-scale undead outbreaks.
Fiendflesh Spikescarf
TsZ1Eer.png Order: Sentinel
The rarest order for a Graveyard Gaoler to join.

LOCALIZED ORDERS AND SOCIETIES
Graveyard Gaolers frequently form localized orders and suborders, both for companionship and to better combat the threats of their region. Here are some of the most popular, though there are dozens.
Sundial Imposter Bruins of the Ruins: An order located in Dragonhome and the Sunbeam Ruins, this order is the richest and most flashy Graveyard Gaoler society. They commonly wear gold jewelry or precious stones and host charity galas to raise money to fund cemeteries, crematoriums, and other funerary services. Lately, most of their money has been going to victims of Luminax. Members of this order tend to be Coffinist and Bruins.

Emperor's Knell: An order of death, dedicated to killing Luminax. They haven't succeeded yet, and their failed attempts are a serious drain on Graveyard Gaoler numbers. Members are either death seekers, glory hounds, criminals, dragons looking to regain their honor, or barely-adults who haven't figured out they can die yet. Despite this, this order features prominently in Graveyard Gaoler culture and is highly valorized, even worshipped. 155.png

Hellhound Hellwell Hellhounds: Security and honor guard for the Hellwell Undercroft and Blight Sanctum. Mostly Kirkyard Grims and hardcore Cremationists. The division also saw combat with Plague's Exalt Services during several dominance battles, and there are few better places in the Scarred Wasteland to hear war stories. A little too fond of bioweapons, heavy metal, and arson.

Starwood Sleuth: A reclusive casket of Graveyard Gaolers in the Starwood Strand and Forbidden Portal entrance, these sleepy scholars guard Sorneith from undead and extraterrestrial threats alike. They also dabble in knowledge otherwise considered...heretical, including the processes and habits of necromancers and undead, but nothing too terrible has occurred...yet. Widely mistrusted by rest of Graveyard Gaoler society. Hibernal Starbear

Murktooth Bramblekeep Bramblekeep Bersekers: An order of Graveyard Gaolers centered around the Ghostlight Ruins, Foxfire Bramble, and Wispwillow Grove, this sect enjoys esoteric rituals, hunting ghosts, and entering violent trances where they cannot tell friend from foe via mushrooms. All members of this order wear bear skins when charging into battle. The only Gaoler order that specializes in performing exorcisms and seances.
RELIGION AND SECTS
Most Graveyard Gaolers are highly religious and most are devoted to The Plaguebringer, even if they were born outside the Plague Flight.

How a Graveyard Gaoler thinks of other dragons with different religious beliefs than it depends on the individual, but generally it follows this pattern:

Heretic-A dragon who picks and chooses part of Plague theology the dragon in question doesn’t like (usually another Plague dragon or Graveyard Gaoler).

FASHION, ART, AND AESTHETICS
Unlike most Gaolers, Graveyard Gaolers enjoy the decorative arts and enjoy wiling the long hours in the graveyard making art.

Graveyard Gaoler fashion pulls heavily from Plague, Earth, Light, and Shadow aesthetics. Most Graveyard Gaolers are not very interested in fashion; however, there is a small but vocal minority that love fashion.

Unusually for Gaolers, some Graveyard Gaolers enjoy collecting objects that bring them comfort. Death-related kitsch and soft objects like pelts and stuffed animals are especially beloved. Possession and care of comfort objects, especially those created by loved ones, helps Graveyard Gaolers cope with their grim duty.

Graveyard Gaolers and Beastkin will occasionally partner with each other to hunt undead and necromancers, or for other goals. Reapers will seek out Graveyard Gaolers and their sharp noses to track down members of their flock fallen to the darkness.

Graveyard Gaolers frequently use dogs and dog-like creatures to aid The Great Hunt. There was heavy debate over whether Infestation Hounds, Wraith Hounds, and Hellhounds are undead, but ultimately these creatures are so useful to Graveyard Gaolers they decided not to press the matter any further.

Coffinist Familiars

Coffinist dragons may take undead familiars as a means of supervising them. This may get them side-eyes at best and charges of heresy at worst. Ghostly familiars receive little scrutiny because they do not have bodies.

Cremationist Familiars

Cremationists favor scavengers and familiars capable of purging the undead. They overwhelmingly favor unambiguously living familiars.

These are far from the only familiars a Graveyard Gaoler may have, but they are the most common.
LAIRS
Graveyard Gaolers are most common in Plague, Earth, Shadow, and Light, but can be found anywhere with an undead problem.
TACTICS

Despite their fearsome reputation and the god that made them, most Graveyard Gaolers are peaceable creatures when unprovoked, content to survey their consecrated domains and the tombs within them.

TRIVIA
 • A common nickname for Graveyard Gaolers is "bears".
 • Graveyard Gaolers are known for their love of honey, with some less scrupulous individuals even taking bribes of honey from necromancers or body snatchers for access to their graveyards. Other individuals even keep bees in their graveyards, as being chased by a swarm of angry bees is always a deterrent to graverobbing.
 • A Graveyard Gaoler with a long tail is known as a "Callisto".
 • A group of Graveyard Gaolers is known as a "casket" or "sleuth".
 • The current record for most impaled undead goes to a dragon with Shardflank who impaled an entire undead Fae nest with over 40 individuals.
