Like with most forests, the Veilspun made their home there, living happily and peacefully among nature. But the Tidelord and the Earthshaker were still fighting, back then, and their battles ended up having disastrous consequences for the Veils and their forest. Due to the conflict, a tidal wave rose, crashing into and submerging the forest completely, and almost drowning and killing off every Veil living there. Luckily, the Veils of that time had a wise and magically gifted leader, and she lead them all in casting a spell to save their forest and people--a spell which wouldn't have been possible to cast with one dragon alone. This spell permanently changed their biology and makeup enough that they became aquatic, and could go on living deep underneath the newly formed ocean. For a long time after that, these dragons were scarcely seen-- they rarely swam up to the surface, and those few that did avoided other dragons out of mistrust. However, these dragons have very recently begun migrating to the surface in mass amounts, though no one quite knows why, yet, and they don't seem very keen on providing answers. The most forthcoming of their group are the children, and children are not the most reliable source for gaining information.[/center] [center][color=Lightseagreen][size=5]Biology[/color][/center] [center][emoji=nautilus size=1] [emoji=seashell size=1] [emoji=seafood size=1][/center] [center]Deepsea Veils can be born of any element (Though the Arcane and Water flights are most common), but due to the ocean magic deeply embedded in their genes, water will always come most naturally to them. This magic affects them so profoundly that their elemental magic will always come second to their more inherent water magic. So a Deepsea Veil born to the fire flight would be able to use fire magic and water magic, but their water magic would be more prominent. They would be able to create steam and heat, and would have a much easier time creating superheated, boiling water than any actual fire. Hot springs would feel like home to these Dragons. How a Deepsea Veil's unique mixed magic takes form depends on the Dragon itself-- There are many unique and varying ways for the different magics to mix. The only exceptions to this are Water flight Dragons, who have a deeper than usual connection to their water magic instead.[/center] [center][color=Lightseagreen][size=5]Culture[/color][/center] [center][emoji=nautilus size=1] [emoji=seashell size=1] [emoji=seafood size=1][/center] [center]The culture of Deepsea Veils is heavily influenced by the event that made them what they are. While the newly aquatic Veils loved and thrived within the ocean, they loathed the Tidelord for the lengths he had forced their people to go in order to survive. In addition, the spell they cast wasn't enough to cover every single veil, and several died on that day despite their best efforts, which did nothing to endear them to the Tidelord any. Some Deepsea Veils even began worshipping the ocean as a separate deity entirely, something that would be seen as blasphemy by most other dragons, Water flight dragons especially. Deepsea Veil society also heavily values teamwork and collaboration, likely because those were the values that saved them from extinction when the tidal wave hit. These Dragons are very pack and family oriented, and tend to stick close to those like them. They're quite a tight-knit group. Many of their strongest spells require multiple dragons to cast, and even spells that can used by a single dragon tend to be used in combination with another Dragon casting a different but compatible spell. When exploring the vast ocean outside their lair, they tend to travel in groups of three, which helps prevent ambushes by predators. They've also, surprisingly, been observed interacting peacefully with members of the Beastclans, trading goods and sometimes even hunting together. Variation in Dragons is extremely common, due to their heavy magical makeup. They are born most commonly to the Water, Ice, or Shadow flights. Unlike regular Deepsea Veils, Ghost Ship Veils tend to be solitary and isolated; seeking out quiet, empty, cold areas in which to make their homes. They will occasionally form pairs when they come across one another, but always split up again after hunting and traveling together for a long enough time. Like regular Deepsea Dragons, Ghost Ship Veils are not hostile towards Beastclans. However, they don't go out of their way to interact with them either. These Dragons seem to have an Eye for an Eye policy-- they will leave others alone as long as they are left alone in turn. The Magic of Ghost Ship Veils also seems strangely separated from their actual being. Unlike regular Deepsea Veils, who's Water magic is an inseparable part of them, fused into their very core... the Ice and Water magic of Ghost Ship Veils seems to instead be layered on top of their original magic. For Dragons who are already naturally of the ice or water flight, this isn't an issue. The extra Ice and Water magic just acts as a powerup, strengthening their magic. But for Dragons of other flights, this causes their magic to behave strangely. Despite time, this stardust still retains the power and ability to collect itself into pockets within the earth. This power has been known to contaminate the eggs of those that nest nearby and while usually this would only cause small changes to the hatchling, rare cases have been known to occur in which an egg absorbs too much stardust, essentially fusing it to the star itself. When this stardust collects in the ocean, it tends to get swept along in the current patterns and isn’t able to settle to contaminate a nest. However, the stardust will be caught by anything that uses these currents to travel, some of the largest being the Deepsea Veilspun Dragons. Thusly, a contaminated, but unaltered adult can pass on enough of this stardust to their eggs to cause them to mutate. These hatchlings are as bright as stars themselves, posing a risk as they draw attraction from Predators. Despite the added threat they carry, they not only carry the strong water magics of their biological brethren, but they also carry the starry arcana of the star they're a part of. [center][color=Teal][font=Coronet][size=6]~ Characteristics ~[/font][/color][/center] [center]Deepsea veils are quiet and stoic, and very serious and passionate about their beliefs. They enjoy swimming much more than flying, and quite a few of them never learned how to fly at all. They move as if they are underwater at all times, and the smell of the ocean follows them wherever they go. They are never completely dry. Ghost Ship Veils-- or at least, the few who have made contact with outsiders-- appear to still retain the thoughtfulness and quiet passion of their brethren. Unlike their brethren, however, they are much more physically strong, and can be rather aggressive in battle. They seem to go out of their way to avoid other dragons, but are at least willing to occasionally talk to other Deepsea Veils. Though Ghost Ship do rely much more heavily on flight than Deepsea Veils do, their preferred method of travel is sliding across the ice and snow.
