Every day, new lineages and subspecies projects are established across the Flight Rising forums. Users pour their creative energy into sculpting lore, establishing rules, thread-design, creating resources, breeding, auction house stalking...all to various degrees of success. Some subspecies and lineages are never picked up by other users, and so fade into obscurity. Others are successful, but eventually laid to rest when the creator leaves the site, leaving the thread unmaintained.
For every Night Warrior Project and Project Ugly, there are many more threads left to the shadows. Long abandoned by their once hopeful creators, dragons in connection with the dead projects still occasionally roam Sornieth, languishing under the weight of their untold stories...
...unless, of course, someone were to tell them.
[rule]
I am fascinated by subspecies and lineages. They require both a large amount of creativity and dedication. Even in creating my mostly-joke subspecies CLOWNPANTS!, I had to do an awful lot of legwork and writing. And there's still a lot of current maintenance that goes into keeping the thread up to date. It's no wonder then that Flight Rising has so many abandoned subspecies/lineages. Even if a user doesn't go inactive from the site, the time and effort it takes to create and continue either can cut into a lot of personal time. For many, it's just not worth the continued effort.
But subspecies and lineages show the creativity of our site. Every last one of them embodies the idea, memory, joke, and/or more of a site member. They're connected to a wealth of stories and lore, concepts and cultures. They exist as a reminder of what stories can be told on Flight Rising, and how.
I try to keep as many lineages and subspecies from dying out completely as I can, but I'm only one lair. Perhaps you would like to lend some time in the memory of individuals who once did the same for Flight Rising and our entertainment.

This is a public project. Anyone who wishes to participate can! Just read on to find out how.

[*]Identifying "dead" subspecies and lineages!
[*]Recording these dead subspecies and lineages on our public wikipedia!
[*]Establishing breeding pairs and sales for members of these dead subspecies!
[*]Donating dragons that match the criteria of dead subspecies and lineages to @Hyzenthlaay, so that she can give them to interested breeders for free!

More information on how to do these is listed below. It seems like a lot - after all, this is a big undertaking! - but remember, you don't have to participate in every part of the project. And if you have questions, I'm happy to answer them!
[rule]
Step One) Understand what is considered a "dead" subspecies or lineage*, then identify one.
*...which will now be shortened to "SLs" for ease of writing.
[rule]
An SL is considered dead if either of the criteria are met:

1) The creator's account has been inactive for about ten months or longer, and no new user has "picked up the torch" in their place.
Establishing just how long a user has been gone can be an imprecise business, but use the date of their last forum post and confirm that their dragons are unfed (some users just avoid the forums!). Additionally, users will sometimes pass on the responsibilities of SL upkeep to a new user before leaving the site. Ensure that this is not the case by using the forums' search feature with the SL name.

2) The creator's account is active, but they have no interest in continuing the SL.
If the thread has some kind of post from the creator saying that it is no longer being maintained, then the lineage is considered dead. If there is no such post, but the thread has clearly not been updated in some time, reach out to the creator and ask them if they would be comfortable with their SL being listed in this thread. Some users might want to get back around to their old projects, after all - and asking someone outright if they consider a past creative venture of theirs "dead" is a little harsh! If you are given approval by them, the SL can begin its journey into the afterlife.
When reaching out to a user via PM, consider linking them to this post, which gives a brief explanation of the project and why they are being contacted. You can also lift language from it if you're unsure of what to write!
The rare exception to this rule is if the SL thread itself is still active through other users. For example, the creator of Project Ugly no longer updates the lineage list, and has slowed their breeding. But the thread itself is actively posted in by users still breeding uglies, making the thread reasonably "alive".
Note: You cannot use this thread to revive your own SL! This is for SLs who have no one available to do that for them. I encourage you to revive your projects on your own!

Step Two) Fill out our Google Form OR create a Wikipedia page.
Have a bona fide dead SL on your hands? Excellent! There are one of two things you can do, depending on the amount of work you want to do.
The shorter option is to fill out our Google form. It will automatically send your response to a Google Sheet, accessible here. You may edit your form after responding, and can submit multiple forms.
The slightly longer option is to create a page on our Wikipedia. Use this template and simply fill out the relevant information for your SL. Choosing this option means that you don't have to fill out the form, and takes the burden off of me (or any other kind users: if you take it upon yourself to look at the Sheet and add species from it, I greatly thank you) from scouring the form's raw data to add more SLs. It also makes it much easier for thread users to browse, since the Wiki articles can be properly tagged and archived.
I've created the template so making pages is easier, even if its your first time. If at any point the Wiki confuses you, let me know, and I can help you through it!
[rule]
Step Three) Optional: Establish a breeding pair and your "Graveyard".
You are never required to make a breeding pair for every single dead SL you identify. The goal is to find and record as many as possible, after all, and I'd never discourage that!
If you've fallen in love with the SL you've found, you should make a Graveyard. (No Google Forms this time!) If this is your first breeding pair, post the following form and save the link. This is where all of your breeding pairs will be hosted. If you're making your second+ breeding pair, just edit your pair onto your Graveyard.
You can register for SLs currently being bred for by other thread users, too - this isn't a first come, first served kind of deal. The more the merrier!

There are two "main" pinglists: one for general thread updates, and one for general hatchlings. The latter means that you will be pinged for every baby bred in the thread. Specific which (or both) you wish to be put on when asking!
If general hatchlings isn't your jam, feel free to be as specific as you'd like for what you would want to be pinged for: such as only for certain breeds, elements, SL themes, etc. Just let me know, and I'll add you below!

Hi there! If you were linked here by a PM, it is because we are considering adding your old subspecies to our public hatchery. "Back From The Dead" is a community effort to breed dragons from discontinued projects; mainly, subspecies and lineages.
A user found an old project of yours and wishes to continue breeding for it! You don't have to have any involvement in this process; the thread will breed the specified dragons. If you fully intend to get back to your project, then we do not consider it a discontinued thread, and it will not be listed here. We only list threads that the original owner cannot or does not want to continue!
Additionally, you can also tell us to not revitalize your project, even if it's discontinued - we'll respect your wishes.
If, down the line, you want to restart your project, please notify us! You will be removed from the thread, be given the honor of being a "resurrected" thread, and the user who originally contacted you will be given a snazzy prize. Being listed here doesn't mean that your project has to be permanently discontinued! In fact, if this PM encourages you to pick it back up again, all the better.
While not required, you can feel free to donated any relevant dragons to your project that might be lingering in the bowels of your hibernal den to user @hyzenthlaay. They will be listed on "Back From The Dead" and given to persons who want to breed them.
A final word: this thread exists because we find value in every subspecies and lineage, no matter its age or size. They are a living testament to the creativity of Flight Rising, which is why we work so hard to preserve them. If we're contacting you, you're more than worthy of being listed here - promise!
All the best,
Hyzenthlaay
