I HAVE PASSED OWNERSHIP OF THIS SUBSPECIES TO @BLUEETERNITY. FIND THE NEW THREAD HERE.
(AMAZING graphic by @EclipseDragon!)
This is a work-in-progress subspecies (the thread is also very much WIP, so formatting and images will come later). I am new to creating subspecies, so any and all help is much appreciated! Pitch in to create ideas, help by sending funds or dragons, help with formatting...help with anything would be great.
HOW IT STARTED
https://www1.flightrising.com/forums/frd/3027422/1
I made a post on Flight Rising Discussion with a joke about a scried Obelisk being an Oilbelisk, a dragon made entirely out of oil that arose from the mass sacrifice of lamp oil during the Dustcarve Dig. The idea quickly took off, with many people supporting the idea of making it a subspecies. Even Xhaztol posted on the thread and commended me on how he liked the idea. I thought that making it a subspecies sounded fun, and many people supported the idea and wanted it to happen, so...
The Oilbelisks were created.
LORE
Oilbelisks are Obelisks who were born...different from other Obelisks. When the massive supply of lantern oil was lost in the river, some of it seeped into the stone next to the river. It trickled into some of the stone that was used to make the statues that would become the Obelisks. When the Earthshaker breathed life into these statues, the raw elemental power made the oil take on a mind of its own. When the stone fell away on these certain statues, it revealed, not a normal dragon, but dragons made entirely out of magical, living oil.
Oilbelisks who were born directly from the oil spill can only control and create pure oil, not a traditional element. However, Primal Oilbelisks, the most powerful variety, can turn normal dragons into Oilbelisks. When a dragon is turned into an Oilbelisks, their natural element is fused with oil-based powers, such as Fire Oilbelisks being able to spit oil from their fangs that ignites when it touches the air (and even being able to harmlessly set themselves on fire), or Plague Oilbelisks dripping a disease-causing oil from their jaws. Any Oilbelisks who are born from an egg, such a species from an Oilbelisk breeding with a normal dragon or another Oilbelisk, also gains an oil-element fusion from absorbing the natural element of the land they were born in. Some Oilbelisks absorb the element that surrounds them even after creation, retaining their original eye color but gaining new powers and a new appearance.
Oilbelisks cannot go into stoneshape; instead, they can temporarily melt themselves into a puddle of oil, which enables them to sneak into places that a normal dragon could not. However, Oilbelisks cannot stay in this form for more than about ten minutes (Primal Oilbelisks can stay in the form slightly longer, for about 15-20 minutes), upon which they will turn back into their normal self. If an Oilbelisk in oil form is exposed to a significant amount of water, they will wash away in it, and will not be able to reform. All Oilbelisks, no matter their element, can spit pure oil from their fangs, which can sometimes be affected by the element they’re influenced by.
When exposed to direct sunlight for too long, the dripping skin of an Oilbelisk will harden, making it hard for them to move around (although it is not impossible). This can be cured simply by picking off the dried oil, which will quickly replenish itself, or by briefly soaking in water. In any form, an Oilbelisk will quickly burn away if set on fire; however, Burning Oil Oilbelisks or Oilbelisks that are naturally Fire-element are immune to this.
Oilbelisks are typically named after things related to oil (such as “Crude” or “Derrick”), or names relating to their sub-element (such as a Burning Oilbelisk being named “Lamp” or “Kerosene”). However, converted Oilbelisks can choose to keep their original name.
Oilbelisks do not have their personalities altered from what they would have been otherwise. They come in a wide range of personalities, and seek different callings as normal Obelisks do. They consider themselves to be a separate group from their normal Obelisk kin.
REQUIREMENTS
Breed: Must be Obelisk
Gender/Age: Any
Colors: First two colors must be Oilslick, Obsidian, Midnight, and/or Coal. The tertiary color range depends on the subtypes.
Genes: First two genes must be Slime/Sludge, Ripple/Current, Iridescent/Shimmer, Metallic/Alloy, or Tide/Foam. Tertiary gene requirements are different for different subtypes.
Elements: Any elements are accepted. Any type may have any elemental colored eyes, except for the Primals, whose eyes must match their element.
VARIATIONS
Dark Oil
Tertiary Colors: Coal-Midnight range (or any if tertiary is basic)
Tertiary Genes: Basic, Crackle, Smirch, Capsule, or Flecks
The basic Oilbelisk type. They do not have any variation from the normal powers listed above.
Elemental Varieties
Flaming Oil
Tertiary Colors: Goldenrod-Sand range (or Oilslick if tertiary is Koi)
Tertiary Genes: Glowtail, Smoke, Smirch, Koi, Firefly, Veined, Flecks, Sparkle, or Capsule
A special type of Oilbelisk, which has powers relating to fire. They are able to set themselves on fire, and shoot flaming oil from their fangs instead of normal oil. When they turn into an oil puddle, they can set themselves on fire without being harmed, but this takes effort and will make it so that they turn back into dragon-shape sooner.
Aquatic Oil
(TsunamiVoid's scry, altered by me)
WIP (suggested by TsunamiVoid). Water variant.
Tertiary Colors: Lapis-Turquoise
Tertiary Genes: Veined, Capsule, Smirch, Flecks
Primary Genes: Any of the normal genes + Ground/Fissure
Frozen Oil
(Scry by LupusUncia)
WIP (suggested by LupusUncia). Ice variant.
Tertiary Colors: Cream-Grey
Tertiary Genes: Crackle, Veined, Smoke, Glowtail, Scales, Koi, Stained, Flecks
Primary/secondary genes: Any of the normal genes + Crystal/Facet and Ground/Fissure
Fossil Oil
(Scry by EclipseDragon)
WIP (suggested by EclipseDragon). Earth variant 1.
Tertiary Colors: Maize-White or Cinnamon-Rust
Tertiary Genes: Ghost
Primary/secondary genes: Any of the normal genes + Crystal/Facet and Ground/Fissure
Iridescent Oil
WIP. Light variant.
Tertiary Colors: Goldenrod-Cantaloupe
Tertiary Genes: Koi, Flecks, Sparkle
Mineral Oil
Second Earth variant.
Tertiary colors: Anything
Tertiary genes: Opal, Gembond
Primary/secondary genes: Any of the normal genes + Crystal/Facet and Ground/Fissure
Overgrown Oil
WIP. Nature variant. Oilbelisks that have somehow had plants start feeding off of their oil and growing in the sludge that drips off of them. The plants, miraculously, use the oil to grow, and the dragon is able to gain energy from the photosynthesis of the plants. If an Overgrown Oilbelisk is not exposed to sunlight for long periods of time, they will become weak and sick.
Tertiary Colors: Jade-Moss
Tertiary Genes: Veined, Glowtail, Keel, Smirch, Koi, Crackle, Flecks
Enchanted Oil
Tertiary Colors: Blush-Pearl
Tertiary Genes: Runes, Koi, Glimmer, Glowtail, Smoke, Smirch, Sparkle
Infected Oil
WIP. Plague variant (brainstormed with LupusUncia).
Tertiary Colors: Rust-Coral, Leaf-Honey
Tertiary Genes: Smirch, Capsule, Gembond, Stained, Koi, Ghost, Ringlets, Crackle, Veined, Flecks
Fuming Oil
Suggested by Hyatha. Wind variant. Constantly leaks a toxic smoke, and can control the flow of it.
Tertiary Colors: Spruce-Mint, Mantis-Chartreuse
Tertiary Genes: Smoke, Glowtail
Electrified Oil
Suggested by Naien.
Tertiary Colors: Cerulean-Mint
Tertiary Genes: Firefly, Circuit, Crackle, Veined, Glowtail, Sparkle, Flecks
Shady Oil
Primary and Secondary Colors: Must be Shadow.
Primary and Secondary Genes: Must be Slime/Sludge or Iridescent/Shimmer.
Tertiary Colors: Coal-Mulberry
Tertiary Genes: Same as Dark Oil.
Primal
Overlaps with the other types. Primal Oilbelisks are the most powerful; they have much stronger oil powers, and can even turn other dragons into Oilbelisks by smothering them with oil and leaving them to sit for a few days to about a month, depending on how much the dragon needs to be transformed to become an Oilbelisk. The Primal Oilbelisks were created because much more oil seeped into certain river stones, mainly where the spill originally happened. Their power comes across in their eyes, which manifest the oil version of whatever element they are aligned with.
The prerequisites are the same as for whatever variant they are, but they must have Primal eyes corresponding to their element.
THE REGISTRY
See registry post below for a list of Oilbelisks. I will likely set up a breeding project for Oilbelisks, and if you have a dragon that already qualifies, you may register them as an Oilbelisk. You can also start your own breeding or geneing projects to create an Oilbelisk.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
I would love some help with this project! You can help by:
* Searching for Oilbelisk candidates on the Auction House
* Breeding or geneing your own Oilbelisks
* Providing nests or lair space when mine is full
* Sending me and other Oilbelisk creators dragons, funds, and gene scrolls
Also, you can put this banner on your profile page, Oilbelisk dragon bios, or signature if you want! (Made by EclipseDragon.)
Here is the Imgur album for the larger banners also made by EclipseDragon.
