A Necromancer Subspecies

Introduction

His heart did not beat.
Yet he did not die.

This subspecies is a variant in associated with 3idolon's Necromancer Subspecies.

The aesthetics of Revenants has been partly inspired by the Zombie Subspecies, a very old publicly owned Plague subspecies. The lore is entirely unrelated however.

Death is the natural end of life and a necessary part of evolution. A dragon, in death, proves themselves unfit for survival. They ought never to live again. Yet, many things could tempt a dragon onto the path of apostasy. One way or another, whether by the whims of a puppetmaster or by their own hand, a dragon could be wrenched back into existence as something not quite living. Lichs, who are benighted by the taint of the Shade, gain from it a measure of control over the dead. These dragons also claim the name of "necromancer". But instead of channeling the ebb and flow of plague and living vitality, they attach the tendrils of their Shade-begotten powers to animate corpses. Through a complex ritual known only to them, they call on the might of the Shade to breath new life into these empty vessels. Or at least, the closest facsimile of life that an entropic force like the Shade can emulate. Not all Lichs know how to create Revenants. It's a difficult process that must be learned and practised. A Lich who performs it incorrectly may raise a Wight instead of a Revenant. It is typically the older and stronger Lichs, more Shade than dragon, who can create Revenants with any regularity. Though they can potentially raise the corpse of any dragon, Necromancers and their kin make up their favored targets for reanimation. In life, Necromancers hunt Lichs for their heresy. In death, there is no better revenge than to warp the once pieous priests into heresy made flesh. It is in the hands of a Lich that many once-dead Necromancers find themselves reanimated. For a devotee of the Mother, there is no greater horror. In the eyes of the godly, the undead are aberrations. They are neither one thing nor another. A perversion of life that has nothing to do with the rest of creation. They are puppets reborn out of the dark corners of infinity. Magic is the only thing that sustains their being. However, the fear of death is a universal thing, and Necromancers are not immune to it. Some Necromancers deliberately, and very quietly, seek out undeath. Under the pretence of some other innocuous cause, these Necromancers make secret deals and careful bargains with Lichs to negociate contracts that would allow them to cheat death. Branded as the worst kind of heretic, these Necromancers live an uneasy existence knowing that they would be slain immediately and unequivocally if discovered by their kin. But to those who fear death more than they fear the living, the risks are worth the reward. They would not go quietly into their grave, but endure beyond death in their eternal struggle to survive. The stance of the Necromantic Council is that Revenants are the most unholy corruption of a Necromancer. But the Necromancers of this splinter faction preach a different, heretical doctrine. If a dragon can conquer even death, does that not mean they have achieved mastery over life? Their beige and sanguine scales fade to the green of rot and decay. They are not mindless shambling undead, but are possessed of thought and will, with their own desires and ambitions. Though how much of that is their own, as opposed to that of their animator, remains to be seen. Even the lightest of brushes with the void of the Shade leaves a lingering mark. A Revenant will usually find their magic upon rebirth twisted in some way, warped from their original purpose. A Revenant who heals a dragon might steal from them days of their life, forever shortening their natural lifespan. Or, they may leave their patients emaciated, their flesh purged of affliction but hanging off of skeletal frames as if starved. Most Revenants lose much of their former skill upon their rebirth. Their sojourn into the grave having eaten part of their unliving soul. Things are flat. There is less beauty in a sunrise, less meaning in a prayer, less joy in a friendship... Less. Some Revenants however, continue on in undeath much as they have in life. They retain the entirety their Plague-blessed powers, being able to wield sickness and infection as aptly—if a little differently—as any other of their living kin. They may find their personality mostly unchanged, save for the silence and stillness of their unbeating heart. These Revenants are the most unsettling for living Necromancers to encounter. Though they are unholy creatures to be destroyed, even the most hardcore disciple of the Plaguebringer may find it difficult destroy a creature that speaks with their friend's voice or wears their loved one's face. Very rarely, a Necromancer of little skill may actually gain more power in becoming a Revenant. Their death serves as the final crucible that would at last awaken their dormant power. A Necroservus, or even a Wraith, might find themselves with control over healing and contagion in death that was denied to them in life. Whether they are reviled or revered, Revenants are as varied in death as they were in life. Revenants who cannot accept what they have become, quest endlessly to recover what they have lost. Yet others wholeheartedly embrace their new nature, seeing undeath as merely the next adaptation of their existence. Unlike the Revenant, who are possessed of intelligence and will, Wights are mindless. They are feral and aggressive, and have no memory of who they once were. The longer a corpse has been dead, and the more dismembered their body, the more likely a dragon would return as a Wight; there not being enough soul and substance remaining to reform anything resembling life. They are often malformed, with extra eyes, misshapen wings, or misplaced limbs. Wights are made of bone and magic more than flesh and blood, the pallor of their scales reflect the ossified shells that they inhabit. Their lifespans are extremely unpredictable—owing to the chaotic nature of the magic that stitched their form. A Wight can fall apart in days for seemingly no reason, or they can exist for decades, heedless of the fact that barely anything holds their damaged bodies together. Wights are ferocious creatures that actively hunt and attack other dragons. Their savagery stems from the gaping chasm of wrongness that pervades their entire being. With their bodies and souls broken, they are driven to mindlessly take from others to fill their own void. As such, Wights are cannibals. They feed on dragons and animals alike, trying to steal the flesh, mind, and souls of living beings in a vain attempt to heal themselves. Necromancers who become Wights lose the fine-grained control they used to have. Instead, their contagion strikes at random, the severity and form of their affliction entirely out of their grasp. Even so, they take great pleasure in spreading it, fuelled by their inexplicable rage and hatred for all that lives. A Wight who somehow has the broken shards of their soul restored, either through magic or from consuming enough dragons to reassemble the missing pieces, will regain their reason and start to recall fragments of their former life. A Wight who regains their soul may have more cruel a fate than one that remained without. [b]Dark Sclera:[/b] Despite their existence being intrinsically tied to the Shade, dark sclera is an unsettling eye-type even for Revenants. It is a stark reminder of what they are. Revenants do not display their Shade-touched corruption in the inky tendrils seen on Lichs, but the blackness of dark sclera eyes betray the Shade’s influence nonetheless. These Revenants are animated by the strongest of Lichs. The power of the Shade has suffused their being, filling them up from within and gazing out of their eyes. Breed Standards

”We cannot pretend that Revenants don't exist just because we don’t like them. Mother tests our faith in many ways. The obstacles she places before us are meant to be conquered, not avoided. We must learn about them and understand them, so that we may better defeat them.”

Revenants retain the classic stripes of plague that stitch the spines and wing membranes of Necromancers and its variants. However, unlike the beige or brown-red scales of their still-living cousins, a Revenant is sickly green with decaying flesh. Blood no longer pumps through their veins, and their bodies rot beneath their very skins.

No matter who they were in life, death is the great equalizer. Whether they were a Necromancer of the highest station or a Wraith with little to show for their devotion, death affords them no distinction.

As such, all Necromancers, Necroservi, and Wraiths have the same color-schemes upon becoming a Revenant. Unless it is known who they were before, it's impossible to tell a Revenant's former station from their reanimated corpse alone.

Ghoul Revenants

Ghoul Revenants are an exception to the rule, as Ghouls so often tend to be. The twice-cursed Ghouls who die and are reanimated are stuck in a strange limbo state, even more so than other Revenants. Death has partially contained their disease—a corpse only retains so much virulence—but what remains still eats away at their unliving flesh. A reanimated Ghoul is unlikely to persist for very long, if only because their bodies are eventually consumed by their own contagion beyond what the darkest of magics can sustain.

A virulant Ghoul Revenant must have one or more of Slime, Saturn, or Sludge as their genes.

Wights

Wights can easily be identified by their ashen countenance. Instead of the sickly green of decaying flesh, they are pale and colorless, as befitting the unfinished constructs of bone and dark magic that they are. With the exception of their Primary Color, they are otherwise identical in appearance to Revenants.

Ghoul Wights

Like the Ghoul Revenant, a Ghoul Wight has their virulance partly contained by their death. However, their still accursed condition manifests in their genes as one or more of Slime, Saturn, or Sludge.

Lich

The Lich, with their perverse magic, raises Revenants but do not become Revenants themselves. A Lich that is killed and not immediately resuscitated passes irrevocably beyond the reach of the living. The pull of the Stygian Shade to which they have tied themselves is too strong for moral magic to overcome. Their souls are absorbed into the endless, yawning abyss of its devouring hunger. The fates of the decaying Revenant and the feral Wight belong to Necromancers alone.

Breeders & Pairs

Register Your Pair

If you would like to register a pair and have them be added to this post, follow the below steps. This is process is identical to the one used in the Necromancer Breeder Hub. Being registered as a breeder is not necessary to breed and sell revenants!

1) Fill out a breeding card for each pair you want registered on this site: link.

2) Generate your card. Chrome users can right click on the image to save it. Other browsers may need to screenshot and crop the image.

3) Upload the image to your hosting site of choice (I use Discord or Imgur).

4) Copy the code below, and replace the necessary information. Please be sure to include what element your pair will produce (indicating if you're willing to rent nests) and if your pair breeds on request, for special occasions, or will be regularly bred.
