Origin + Overview
Full knowledge of how this subset of the Gaoler breed came to be is well unknown, but what is known is that the Plaguebringer herself had a hand in creating them. Some dragons speculate that she used DNA from a corvid which was a carrier of disease to experiment with, and added it to that of a Gaoler’s; others say it was the result of Gaoler eggs coming in contact with the Wyrmwound. No matter how they were created, Bloodbirds are hatched with inherent mental connections to the goddess of plague, the many eyes all over their bodies hers to use at any time.

The very first Bloodbirds were a pair known in history as Jay and Cruor, of which many if not most future generations would descend from. While Cruor hatched from a plague egg, Jay... did not. But she had a calling, and the Plaguebringer promised her glory in turn for her allegiance. So she left her clan in The Tangled Wood, being a shadow dragon, and was led to Cruor. While they themselves weren’t blessed with many eyes, they were the ones who believed future generations should be kept “pure,” and thus disposed of their own children which they thought to be useless- those without notable eyes. This belief paved the way for Bloodbird traditions in modern time.

Bloodbirds live in flocks of anywhere from fifteen to forty dragons, exhibiting most of their birdlike behaviour through their social structure and life. These Gaolers make temporary camps of sorts to reside in and for pairs to nest for the season, before moving on elsewhere. A nomadic species, Bloodbirds will travel all across Sornieth, no matter how much they prefer the plaguelands. It is their duty, after all, to spread disease and pestilence wherever they go.

While flocks with most variants are loosely formed, there is some sense of hierarchy. The size (lengthwise) of a Bloodbird determines their rank in the flock, with the largest being the leader, even if the difference between them and the second largest is mere inches. The eldest of the flock tend to have records of heights from a technical standpoint, keeping track for future purposes. Some of the younger Bloodbirds are tasked with carrying scrolls and food in bags whenever the flock travels, helping them to develop muscles as the hauls of meat dragged along with the flock tend to weigh enough for strenuous exercise.

Ranking
Bloodbird flocks don’t follow the same rankings as other Gaolers; namely, the orders of Seeker, Sentry, Keeper, Overseer, and Sentinel. Rather, the hierarchy is as follows:
The “leader”- the largest of the flock, which organizes battle parties.
The “successor”- the second largest, who will take over once the leader dies.
Elders- the oldest Bloodbirds in the flock, elevated above the others due to their wisdom and knowledge.
Members- a basic term for all Bloodbirds in the flock. These are the hunters, fighters, medics, and messengers.
Fledglings- another term for hatchlings.
All Bloodbirds are trained both to hunt and fight, though a select group are set aside for the medical field, and the fastest of the species are chosen as messengers, to make sure any news or messages reach their destination fast.
For medics: their lore draws from that stated in the community update.

Calls and Noises
Bloodbirds use all different kinds of noises to communicate with one another, as well as a code when around other dragon breeds.
Chirping- the noises of a content Bloodbird, these really have no meaning. If anything, it’s just a noise the species makes regularly, unless hunting or in combat.
Chittering- a repeated “clicking” noise, Bloodbirds make this sound when in disagreement or feeling disdain. More harsh or intense chittering is a sign of greater agitation.
Cry- a more drawn out noise than a shriek, this can be known also as a battle cry, and many Bloodbirds do it in unison before diving into the fight.
Shriek- this noise means danger is near and is a distress call, used the most by a mortally injured Bloodbird.
Trill- a low, musical sound of satisfaction, made the most by fledglings after a successful hunt or by older Bloodbirds after a victorious battle.
Warble- a noise of comfort, this sound is also used by mother Bloodbirds to lull their fledglings to sleep.

However, it is possible for a true Bloodbird to be assimilated by a drone, albeit resulting in varying connections to the hive. Unlike their more natural counterpart, Blooddrones don't spread most diseases Bloodbirds do; rather, they attack the nervous system. Infecting wounds with their saliva, contaminated blood which reaches the brain can lead to all sorts of varying and horrific results. On the mild end of the spectrum, they can induce things such as disorientation and dizziness, and on the severe end they can cause seizures, cardiac arrest, and much worse. Blooddrones are the ideal guard and heavy-lifter drone, due to their stockier and sturdier build.

Variants
While genes may change, there is one colour range for primary, secondary, and tertiary genes:
Crimson-Brick, with the exceptions of: Red, Strawberry, and Cerise.

Scourge Bloodbird
dragon?age=1&body=59&bodygene=73&breed=17&element=2&eyetype=5&gender=0&tert=121&tertgene=2&winggene=73&wings=61&auth=7ef7d84dea7d89c5ed3ce45075c884fb303742e7&dummyext=prev.png Laced/Edged/Smoke or Veined
Scourge Bloodbirds originate from The Wandering Contagion, and their numbers seem greater than those of the other variants. Like the very diseases and pestilences they reside amongst, they spread quickly, maintaining flocks of twenty Bloodbirds or more. Serving as sentries of plague territory, they fear no threat, collectively attacking what they consider to be trespassers and enemies. Scourge flocks often take in straggler Bloodbirds of different variants, once they have deemed them trustworthy.

Scourge Bloodbirds have a different accent of sorts from those of other variants, being unable to pronounce certain words properly with their raspy, drawn out voices. More often than not they may just choose to be silent, listening and only speaking when they absolutely must. The second option is using communication via sounds only Bloodbirds are capable of making: clicks, chirps, and raucous calls to one another. These sounds can mean any sort of thing, though screech-like calls are the trademark sign of danger.

Atrophy Bloodbird

Descendants of Jay and Cruor, Atrophy Bloodbirds can be found in The Abiding Boneyard, the place of the entire species’ origin. Many of this variant hatch with extra horns and extended claws which serve as a defense against the monstrosities of the plaguelands, whereas others just hatch with unique patterns.

It would be considered foolish to go after even a singular Atrophy Bloodbird; this variant tends to have a more stockier and muscular build, and with many having curved horns, it’s common for them to charge at their prey to attempt headbutting them. Residing amongst what passes for life- twisted shrubbery and trees- Blight Bloodbird flocks spring up from Rotrock Rim, and many travel to other parts of the Wasteland, though most prefer to stay in the region of their origin. They use their wings more than any other variant, more so for moving faster than climbing, unlike other Gaolers. Scourge Bloodbirds are numerous, Atrophy Bloodbirds are strong, and Blight Bloodbirds are agile, but Rot Bloodbirds rise above them all, the preferred vessels of the Plaguebringer. These Bloodbirds may have come from The Wyrmwound itself, serving as guardians to Her realm. As with any other Bloodbird, those of the Rot variant can be and are carriers of numerous illnesses and diseases, though those that these Gaolers may have are significantly more deadly, with slim to no survival rates should they pass them on.

Rot Bloodbirds naturally command the respect of their subordinates, being their Goddess’ first go-to for when she wants- or needs- to see through their eyes. When a lone Rot Bloodbird approaches a flock of a different variant, it is wise that the whole of the group stops and listens to their words, as the Plaguebringer may have given them a message to carry on herself.

White XXX

While Bloodbirds are usually rich shades of red, recently a mutation has appeared in nests. Purely white coats adorn this unique variant, a blessing to some flocks and a curse to others. Conflict often surrounds this subject, as some parents are torn between killing and sparing the hatchling. If nothing else, another Bloodbird in the flock will offer to foster it as its own, allowing the hatchling to grow up among the rest of the group.

Believed to be useless in blending into the plagueland terrain, as well as nighttime hunting, these Bloodbirds are trained for combat more than hunting, and in their juvenile years only serve as guardians for hatchlings and older/elderly Bloodbirds.

Note: Blooddrones can have any previously listed colour except crimson.

A Bloodbird which has fallen victim to a hive, it's often the escapees of a "failure nest" (i.e. goat-eyed or faceted-eyed fledglings) which are victims, as they're usually on their own and don't have the enhanced abilities of their many-eyed counterparts.

Hunting
Being purely carnivores, Bloodbirds form hunting parties in which large prey is taken down as a group. This Gaoler species has a go big or go home mentality, and on many occasions it requires the help of extra Bloodbirds to drag home a successful catch due to its mere size. The species tends to pursue their prey in hunting, and with the speed they have, it’s not hard to overtake it. Some of the Gaolers will run ahead of the others to trap and surround their prey before delivering the killing blow or bite. When it comes to large birds, they will imitate their prey’s noises as a form of confusion.

Battle
Entire flocks engage in battle, against normal dragons and sometimes against one another (usually as a result of territorial behaviour). When threats arise, it often takes more than just a few Bloodbirds to address them, and when a high-ranking member of the flock is challenged, many more of the subordinates will jump in to face the conflict.

While many Bloodbirds have breath abilities in their arsenal, they prefer fighting with tooth and nail, slicing at a dragon’s weak points with their talons and often sinking their fangs into open wounds.
