Origin of the Mercys
Mercys are a new strain of creature, come from Plaguebringer knows where. What is known is varied.
Many dragons in the Scarred Wasteland seek mastery of disease, and may approach this through various avenues. Some may simply research, seeking to innoculate themselves against various strains be that by exposure or vaccination, while others take more drastic means. Some may take on symbiotic companions, as the Carrionix do, others may assimilate diseases into themselves like the Pathogenecytes and others still may take other, even more drastic paths.
And there is always the risk that a dragon goes too far.
While Plague reveres disease, survival and mutation, even those most devoutly of the Flight do acknowledge that there is a limit, a point at which something that has come into being is too dangerous to be allowed to persist. Some may force Exaltation upon a dragon - others may commit a great cruelty, and sever them from the mastery of disease they so ardently sought.
To some, this is utter blasphemy against the Plaguebringer, a cruelty too far, forcing devout believers in Plague to live forever separated from what they most desire, forever deafened to the call of their Lady of Plague. Forcibly severed from Plague, some such become immune to Plague's touch while others still fall towards madness without their goddess' guidance. It is thus perhaps unsurprising that some dragons, both those so severed and those with compassion for such, sought to find a solution. In doing so, they have created something wholly new - plague vampires.
No one knows from whence the first Mercy came, but they have grown rapidly in number, both from researchers attempting to reconnect such victimised dragons to Plague and from these new Mercys corrupting the very Plague at the heart of those who had been sent to put them down.
For you see, when so torn from the Plaguebringer's touch, these dragons become void of Plague. A vacuum. When reconnected to Plague they start to sap the Plague from things around them, to try to regain the complex microbiome they once had - and can no longer sustain.

Existence of the Mercys
Mercys are capable of incredible feats. Innately able to draw plague out of everything around them, they can (in theory at least) cure almost anything. They can cleanse areas laced with infection and poison, making safe even areas of the Plaguelands for those with immune deficiencies. They can taste new strains of disease, and help to identify them. They can stop most any attempt at infection in its tracks.
But this power is not without cost. A Mercy's hunger for Plague does not differentiate between harmful as helpful and they are as likely to claim helpful gut microflora as deadly pathogens. New-made, uncontrolled Mercys are even known to sap fluid alongside Plague in their hunger - pus and platelets and blood alike, claiming it and desiccating it within the dry husks of their bodies. Some go as far as to drink blood as much as Plague, and have been known to drink beastclans dry in their thirst. And though in time Mercys may gain some control over their plague-hunger, the vast majority started their new existence by unintentionally ending the life of the dragon who reconnected them to Plague.
Additionally, few Mercys appear entirely normal - few escape their time torn from Plague without trauma, and fewer still escape their period of virulency before that without some mark of infection, mutation or disease. Many Mercys carry evidence of what they once were - extra toes, teeth, a second pupil in one eye, scars of rot or other infection on skin, muscle and bone alike.
Some Mercys may seek help for their condition; a suitably powerful Mage of Plague may even be able to at least limit and contain their hunger for Plague. Others set themselves up as masters of disease, trying to cure specific ills with a power that requires significant practice to make specific distinction. Many become nomads as they attempt to identify their new place in the world and learn to control their hunger - still more become nomads unable to control their hunger, perpetually starving for their next meal of disease and rot, willing and able to attack any they come across.
As present, many Plague dragons are uncertain of the fate or role of Mercys in Mother's grand plan. As yet, nor have the Mercys.

Mercy Infection
Most Mercys are, by nature, non-infectious, still hollow vessels seeking Plague to sate their hunger. However, as Mercys become older, more powerful and - most importantly - more skilled, some develop a unique magic and strain of disease that is not so easily consumed by their own kind: the magic which reconnects them to the Plaguebringer and the strain which changes their form.
Thus, there are some stories of dragons made Mercys not by dragons endeavouring to help them escape the terrible fate wrought on them but rather by having been infected by another Mercy. Most often this infection is done by bite, but especially skilled Mercys can pathokinetically infect other dragons - willing or otherwise.

Infested Mercys
rejecting their second chance
To some Mercys their new interaction with Plague is not enough to ease the loss forced on them, and they seek solace elsewhere. Most dragons know better than to treat with Shade, but desperation pushes even the best to terrible decisions - and to a devout believer in Plague, few fates are worse than such utter severance.
Infested Mercys, in seeking contact with something infectious and encompassing, have welcomed the Shade, allowing it to consume and assimilate the Mercy strain and become something new. Without a significant presence of Plague to limit the Shade's spread and without significant elemental connection, the Shade has a much easier time infesting Mercys that it might other dragons. Consequently, Infested Mercys are oddly infectious, and those they feed on risk being infected not as Mercys but with Shade. Even those that are not infected by the Shade are nonetheless forever affected, a portion of not just their disease or fluid stolen but their very life essence.
Infested Mercys are generally regarded as being more skilled and powerful than regular Mercys - but only in the depths of night or deepest shadow. Similarly, when allowed darkness in which to dwell, the Shade renders these dragons mutable in a way rarely seen: Infested Mercys are known to turn into mist when they risk being caught, and many can take on an animal or beastclan form similar to that of a present or past familiar. Older Infested Mercys can turn into almost anything they've encountered, but doing so pulls them ever more towards the Shade's grasp and is usually the mark of an Infested Mercy soon to shed their physical form entirely to join the Shade.
Most all Mercys detest the Infested at least as much as most dragons do other Shadetouched. Of those Mercys with strength of mind, body and will to fight, many often choose as targets those who, they believe, have rejected their second chance at gaining the Plaguebringer's grace.

Eye Lore
A dragon's eyes are more than just pigment and sight; they are a symbol of the divine, an outward mark of their magical heritage and inward glimpse into their soul. And while a dragon's eyes can't tell you everything about their lives and personalities, they can hint at what is normally hidden. By and large Mercys often follow the common beliefs they were raised with, or which they were taught before their Mercyhood.

Mercy Apparel
While many dragons may adorn themselves to indicate their power and roles, Mercys often adorn themselves based on the practicality of their survival. Nonetheless, that does not prevent the culture of the Plaguelands and the subspecies they originated as or around from rubbing off on them. Further, due to their visual similarity to several other diseased strains, many Mercys have found it easier to simply don the appropriate apparel for the role they've claimed or their own personality.
Common apparel includes travelwear, due to the nomadic nature of most Mercys, but others pick out weapons for self-defence, armour to protect themselves, or symbols of Plague to provide them at least some kind of magic or disease they can easily feed upon. Most all like cloaks, cowls or other ways to obscure their nature, protecting them from those who might heedlessly attack.
Mercys in cloaks are often travellers attempting to find a safe place to rest or stay. Nomads with no one place as home, some find employment as spies and scouts, well able to destroy any who realise their true purpose, while those in masks often started by bearing cloaks. Extending their skills of deception, masked Mercys can become powerful spies and infiltrators, often misleading and distracting those around them so as to better achieve their own goals. Most usually, those goals are simple survival.
Mercys bearing weaponry are often martial in personality and as likely to fight physically as to drain the disease of an attacker. Many are also nomadic, and bear blades as much for self-defence as to protect allies or conquer new territory. Meanwhile, a Mercy wearing armour is as likely to be afraid of attack as to be prepared to attack another. While some may help healers and researchers who crusade against chartalans, undead, or Shadetouched, plenty wear armour for fear of their own safety.
Mercys bearing tools are often extremely pragmatic. Having overcome their hunger enough to master a skill, they seek to find a gainful purpose either separate to their new existence or in accordance with it. These are the Mercys most likely to seek out other dragons rather than waiting to be found, wishing to turn their plague-hungry new existence to Plague's service. Contrastingly, Mercys bearing sources of are often especially isolated, even for their own kind, frequently choosing to pilgrimage to holy places or seek solitude, isolation and meditation. Mercys bearing lamps often prefer to keep to themselves, though most prefer to mislead or persuade interlopers away than to use force, and are often the sources of stories of Will o' th' Wisps.
Jewellery of metal and precious stones are rarely seen amongst Mercys and is usually a marker of those dragons who have done well for themselves. Such Mercys often have precise control over their hunger, have set themselves up as skilled Priests of Plague and received such items as thanks or tribute, or have taken them as trophy after some great fight. However, such adorned Mercys invite intense scrutiny from the other strains and so are often avoided by their kin. Contrastingly bone jewellery is much more commonplace in the Plaguelands and is thus more commonly worn by Mercys - and many Mercys are known to gain an uncanny knack for reading patterns and omens with horrible accuracy. Mercys able to control their hunger may often make a good living as Seers and Oracles.

Familiars
Though Plague-infested familiars are relatively common in the Scarred Wastelands and would be an easy way for a Mercy to sate their hunger, most Mercys choose other companionship. Their very hunger makes such familiars - and indeed, most familiars - less than ideal for them, and so they use an entirely separate ranking system to most dragons.
A Mercy is still a dragon, and a dragon often will still desire companionship. However, a Mercy has inexact control of their new abilities and hunger, and plague-aligned creatures are more at risk of them than those that are not. Consequently, Mercy's prefer different familiars to most dragons of the caste.
Although certain familiars may indicate greater skill, not all Mercys care to outwardly mark the growth of their self-control. Instead, many Mercys instead retain their first or second familiar out of fondness and familiarity. Consequently, a Mercy should never be judged on their familiar - old, powerful and well-practiced Mercys may keep their Pinpush Mirror Doll as easily as show their skill with a Graveyard Guardian. The following is merely indicative of common trends and by no means a rule.

Low-level Familiars: Young Mercys, those new to what they are, often tend towards plant familiars, alchemical familiars, or those otherwise resistant to disease in the first place. Some may even take on intangible or mimic familiars until they gain control of their hunger. Examples include:

Middle-level Familiars: As a Mercy gains control and power, they will start to distinguish themselves more. As they gain control, a Mercy may select a true animal companion, often a wolf, feline, or other predator, both to keep them company and to help them hunt. Examples include:
[item=Black Wolf][item=Ferberus][item=Velvet Floracat] [item=Ashmane Chimera][item=Cursed Bat][item=Sable Feathercroak][item=Scarlet Serpenta][item=Basilisk][item=Corpse Cleaner][item=Nightmare][item=Tunnel Hydra][item=Wasteland Collector][item=Spectre Wyvern][item=Flesh Forager][item=Kelpie][item=Wispwillow Peryton][item=Deeprealm Leon][item=Wraith Hound][item=Dire Claw][item=Gale Wolf][item=Swamphaunt Kelpie][item=Tatterwing Carcass][item=Deeprealm Hunter][item=Rosy Lake Cormorant][item=Tattertail Bilworper]

Upper-level Familiars: Only as they become truly confident in their power do most Mercys take on sapient familiars, such as beastclan companions, sphinxes and the like, or animal familiars laced with disease - though when picking animal familiars, most still prefer predatory hunting companions over other animals. It is very rare indeed for a Mercy to take on a powerful plague-aligned familiar. Doing so often denotes age, power and self-control - or a disregard for the harm that may be done to their companion should they lose control. Examples include:
[item=Autumn Sphinx][item=Aspen Gall Dryad][item=Condorwing Champion][item=Flamescale Spearman][item=Maren Warlock][item=Tengu Caller][item=Marshland Poodle Mith][item=Laybrush Larcenist][item=Longneck Medium][item=Stonestomp Spearmaiden][item=Contaminated Ambassador][item=Bladebone Goliath][item=Infestation Hound][item=Malevolent Spirit][item=Fungi Sage][item=Bone Fiend][item=Scythe Kamaitachi][item=Graveyard Guardian][item=Ghostly Rat Lord][item=Giant White Toridae]

Highest-level Familiars: The only exceptions to Mercys avoidance of plague-aligned familiars are messengers of the Plaguebringer's will themselves - Plague Sprites, Blight Nymphs, Enduring Goblins, Spirits of Plague and the like. Such entities have plague magic as well as disease itself in their essence - and though one choosing a Mercy is rare, it is not unheard of. Examples include:

Your Mercy could have been a dragon forcibly assimilated into the Hive, or have been created by a dragon attempting to replicate the Hive's drones. Perhaps their conversion was incomplete or perhaps a scientist seeking to deprogram Hive dragons found them, and the Hive's assimilative infection was stripped from them - sorely damaging their microbiome in the process, causing them to seek out Mercydom in order to continue.

Not every dragon wants the symbiosis that the Blooming Grove Sickness can create - and some dragons might simply hate to see what they consider to be a dangerous infection. No one's heard of a Carrionix symbiont being forcibly removed from the dragon they've partnered with... yet. Who knows if it's possible? Perhaps it was a symbiont bonding that went wrong, or perhaps those dragons wary of this new subspecies found a way to damage the connection between symbiont and host - perhaps they even tore the symbiont out. Lost without their chosen companion, a dragon might choose Mercydom to find a place again.

Paleblood Hunters are a complicated order, but regardless of their origins, all are touched by some variety of Paleblood. Everyone knows Effluvial Crows are a complex mix of weak and strong, infectious and at times dangerously infected. Their own nature weakens them and encourages them to strengthen themselves - is it perhaps so surprising that one Effluvial Crow, displeased with this eternal dichotomy they were hatched into, might seek out a Mercy to be stripped of the signature infection that makes Effluvials what they are, and become something else?

Curious dragons have always existed in the world of Sornieth.
- Low-level Familiars: Young Mercys, those new to what they are, often tend towards plant familiars, alchemical familiars, or those otherwise resistant to disease in the first place. Some may even take on intangible or mimic familiars until they gain control of their hunger. Examples include:
- Middle-level Familiars: As a Mercy gains control and power, they will start to distinguish themselves more. As they gain control, a Mercy may select a true animal companion, often a wolf, feline, or other predator, both to keep them company and to help them hunt. Examples include:
- Upper-level Familiars: Only as they become truly confident in their power do most Mercys take on sapient familiars, such as beastclan companions, sphinxes and the like, or animal familiars laced with disease - though when picking animal familiars, most still prefer predatory hunting companions over other animals. It is very rare indeed for a Mercy to take on a powerful plague-aligned familiar. Doing so often denotes age, power and self-control - or a disregard for the harm that may be done to their companion should they lose control. Examples include:
- Highest-level Familiars: The only exceptions to Mercys avoidance of plague-aligned familiars are messengers of the Plaguebringer's will themselves - Plague Sprites, Blight Nymphs, Enduring Goblins, Spirits of Plague and the like. Such entities have plague magic as well as disease itself in their essence - and though one choosing a Mercy is rare, it is not unheard of. Examples include:
