On Sornieth, there exists a dragonlike being known as an Astral Automaton. Part machine, part magic, part… something else, these cyborgs live among dragons as a seemingly normal part of society. On the outside, they raise no alarms to any other dragon passing by. They need to eat and sleep, and can even reproduce with other dragons. They might even live in clans undetected. Their personalities have the same range as real dragons, though some individuals might be described as “a bit off.”

Nobody on Sornieth knows the true origin of the Astral Automatons. The oldest individuals claim to remember nothing before their appearance on Sornieth, but some dragons think they know more than they’re willing to reveal. Theories and rumours run wild in communities aware of the pseudo-dragons. Some think they were created as a collaboration by the Stormcatcher and the Arcanist; some think they were dragon-built machines brought to life by magic; some think their origins are extraterrestrial. Truth, however, is stranger than fiction.

Many years ago, Arcane flight scientists managed to send a small probe into space. Not unlike the golden record sent on the real-life Voyager mission, the probe contained an abridged version of dragonkind and its culture. The magic used to send the probe upwards kept it flying away from Sornieth until it was, by pure luck, discovered by an intelligent species in another galaxy. All they gained, however, was a clear image of every dragon breed extant at the time.

Interested, the aliens crafted a line of surveyor robots. Their mission was to arrive on Sornieth, integrate with dragonkind, and send data back to their home planet. Unfortunately, the trip through space wasn’t a smooth one: an asteroid collided with the spacecraft, cutting communication with their creators. Though heavily damaged, the spacecraft managed to continue on its course. The robots inside were all but destroyed.

Upon arrival, the ship could not safely land on Sornieth. Its built in plan B activated, dropping its cargo in three batches of ten across the planet. The first landed in the ocean, where it remains to this day. The second landed in the Starfall Isles, and the third landed in the Shifting Expanse. The inherent magic in these areas began to change the broken machines. Stardust and metal fused to create something almost biological. The robots remained undiscovered and undisturbed.
