Of course, there are those who do not believe the legends about the starwood kami...and then, when they do not return, or come back with their minds broken, they become the center of new tales, themselves... Why is Astarrea so vicious, though? Is she an evil kami? Not at all! To those who respect her, she inspires breakthroughs to mental blocks, and grants intellectual clarity. She is, however, first and foremost, a guardian to the kodama in her woods. What is a kodama, though? A kodama is a shape-shifting tree-spirit, similar to a dryad. They transform between their dragon and spirit forms at will, but a kodama's true body is that of a tree. If the tree dies, the kodama fades away. Each kodama's dragon and spirit form resemble their tree. (Though there are some kinds of lesser kodama who cannot wander as spirits. These kodama became kodama through some other means, and are not naturally so, hence their limitations.) They are fairly docile creatures, only desiring to live peacefully in their forest homes. They rely on their kami (much more powerful spirits who rule over their homes) to protect them, and follow their commands without question. However, Astarrea only has direct rule over the starwood trees in her territory. And in Astrrea's territory, there is another kami. He is her husband, Sanmei, and he rules over a grove of sakura trees. This grove rests deep within Astarrea's territory, and though she does not rule over the kodama there directly, Sanmei is submissive to his wife's authority, as he and his kodama live within her greater territory. He is a muse, and many an artist seeks him out, but he is very difficult to reach. First, one would need Astarrea's permission to see him, and then permission from Sanmei himself to enter his grove, which he does not leave. Permission is not easily granted, and if one offends either kami, a terrible fate awaits them.

Astarrea's Territory

In the Starwood Strand in the Starfall Isles is a section of woodland claimed and watched over by a powerful spirit (known as a kami.) Her name is Astarrea.

60325175_350.png

Even outside of the Strand, those who live near the woods are wary of her. There are all sorts of legends and folktales, warning dragons not to wander too deeply into her territory, and to always give her proper respect.

If Astarrea inspires thought, Sanmei inspires emotion.

And this is because a dragon is only cursed if he or she breaks the law of the kami (usually through trespassing.) Non-native Kodama

These are kodama who used to be dragons, but were cursed by the guardian kami and became kodama. These kodama are considered second-class citizens among their kind because the only way that one becomes such a kodama is through the kamis' curse, and part of the curse is that they are given a role of servitude. And this is because a dragon is only cursed if he or she breaks the law of the kami (usually through trespassing.) They are also powerless to resist the curse and any command given to them by their superiors. They have less freedom, too, and will generally be confined to Astarrea's territory.

Elements: Any (especially: Nature, Arcane)
Breeds: Any
Colors/Genes: Any, but must match at least 2 gene/color requirements from other kinds of kodama.

The kind of Non-native you have depends on what kind of Kodama he or she was turned into. For example, you might have a Non-native Upper Boughs Sakura Kodama (as opposed to an Upper Boughs Pure Sakura Kodama or a Non-native Regular Hoshizakura Kodama.)

Infected Kodama

These are kodama who were once healthy, but have contracted a highly-contagious disease, slowly killing the kodama and its tree. These kodama and their trees both are slowly rotting away. For the protection of the healthy trees, the kami have banished them from their fellows, and so they wander far from home.

Elements: Plague (ONLY. Also, Rare Plague shows that the Kodama has not yet fully succumbed to the disease, having some of his/her natural green still in his/her eyes.)
Breeds: Any
Colors/Genes: Must match other kinds of kodama except that they must look like they are rotting in some way (i.e., their flowers are rotting on the branch.)

The kind of Infected Kodama you have depends on what kind of healthy Kodama he or she once was. For example, you might have an Infected Upper Boughs Sakura Kodama (as opposed to an Upper Boughs Pure Sakura Kodama or a Non-native Regular Hoshizakura Kodama.)

The Shinobira have lived at peace with Astarrea since even before Sanmei came to the forest. The priests and priestesses of Astarrea are always communing with their kami, divining from her what is acceptable and whatever orders she may have for them. Priests and priestesses are instructed in how to do this from a young age, and keep this role for the rest of their lives. Its is a highly honored position to hold within the clan, but not many are granted it. In fact, there are usually no more than five acting priests and priestesses at a time. This task is particularly useful to the Shinobira in that not only are they pleasing their kami, protecting the trees of their home, and getting in some valuable training by which to hone their skills, but the insects they hunt are also their main source of food. He inspires art and beauty through emotion. Astarrea can be considered a kind of muse herself, inspiring insight and clarity of thought. This married couple of kami sometimes may create lesser versions of themselves: muses which inspire a particular feeling, idea, or trait. These spirits may be created as a blessing for a mortal that the kami decide to help, or as a curse on mortals who trifle with them. Sometimes, these beings are created and sent out without any particular destination in mind, and these muses find their people for themselves to inspire. Muses

As has already been stated, the kami Sanmei is a muse. Muses can appear or disappear as they please (that is, they can become invisible or visible at will), and mortals may not even realize that they are under a muse's inspiration.

Emotion

Muses of emotion are created by Sanmei, and inspire emotion. (For example, one may be a Muse of Sorrow or a Muse of Joy. It will always be a muse of emotion though.) They resemble Sanmei, as they are each made from a single one of the petals which comprises him.
