Sunrise is a grumpy fisherman who fishes from sunset until dawn when it’s quieter, in his boat using his nets and traps and his familiar, a Rosy Lake Cormorant called Xianhe, to catch fish. He brings them back to his riverside hut, to gut, salt and smoke them, so he can sell them at market during the daytime. He keeps very different hours than most fishermen precisely so he can avoid having to talk to others. He likes silence and not having his routine interrupted. Unfortunately for him, his two cousins, Sparrow and Ibis, have turned up on his doorstep hoping to learn to be fishermen. Now, Sunrise is forced to live with and mentor these two hapless wannabes despite lacking the temperament to deal with their stupidity and arrogance. He wants his quiet, routine life back, but until he can teach these two to fish, that isn’t going to happen…

Sparrow comes as a pair with his brother, Ibis. He’s more interested in birds than he is in fish, but Ibis wants to be a fisherman and where Ibis goes, Sparrow goes. Sparrow isn’t really suited to life as a fisherman. He’s not good at remembering instructions, needs things explained in simple language, takes instructions too literally and cannot just guess if you leave out any information in your instructions. He also has problems with balance and fine motor control that can cause accidents and loss of his catches. Sunrise finds him infuriating to deal with because of his constant mistakes and assumes he’s lazy and stupid, yelling at him when he does something wrong. He’s trying his best, but he has obvious learning disabilities that Sunrise needs to accommodate, but since Sunrise doesn’t know that and isn’t particularly patient with other people anyway, Sparrow is just resigned to being bad at fishing and getting yelled at.

Ibis is a troublemaker. He wants to be a fisherman because he thought it would be exciting. He was picturing wrestling with giant monster fish and traversing down raging rivers, not waiting in silence for hours on end and having to remember boring safety rules. He vents his boredom and irritation by acting like a prat and messing about, which leads to him disturbing the fish, losing his catches and important equipment, making mistakes because he wasn’t listening to instructions and annoying Sunrise. He’s partially doing this on purpose and deliberately sabotaging Sunrise because he hates him, and partially doing this accidentally because he’s just acting out and not paying attention. Sunrise hates him because he’s a noisy, arrogant idiot and is always getting into shouting matches with him. He despairs of being able to teach Ibis anything because he’s so obviously unwilling to learn. Ibis thinks this is all hilarious and will keep goofing off and winding Sunrise up as long as he’s forced to be his apprentice.

Heres my good boy Midnight! incredible diver and angler! he cant breathe under water but he can hold his breath for a very long time and use his electric powers to kill underwater prey. Also the trident he bears makes a great conductor.

my only angler is [b][i]creele[/b][/i] right here. he was mostly inspired by the game 'baten kaitos.' he fishes in the sky and can only be seen on cloudy nights above the clouds. what he's looking for, no one really knows, but i imagine the highfin sea serpent familiar as the one he's hunting since it can grow bigger than dragons. and yes, it's in the clouds, too!
