Kobolds are are small reptilian creatures that occupy a wide variety of biomes within Sorienth. Although each variant has unique adaptations to their environments, they are similar enough where we feel confident they can be categorized into the same species. You know - just like how hopping mice and field mice look a little different, but in the end they're both mice? Same thing.
Your eyes aren't playing tricks with you - Kobolds look remarkably like teeny, tiny Mirrors. Adults only grow to about half the size of a standard Mirror, and hatchlings are about the size of an adult Fae. They all have stunted head crests and no leg fins, but other than that, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. To date, we have no idea why this is. Are they a split evolution from Mirrors? An undiscovered dragon breed? A reptile using mimicry to help their survival? Who knows. There are a lot of theories floating around, but nothing concrete has been proven yet.
One thing [i]has[/i] been proven though - Kobolds have absolutely no tie to any of the elemental Deities that watch over Sorienth. Kobolds in any environment can express any sort of eye color. Most scholars believe that is solid proof that they are not dragons at all, but the recent emergence of unaligned Ancient Breeds has thrown that theory out the window and made us rethink what [i]really[/i] is a dragon? Ah - but I'm getting off topic. That's a discussion for another time.
As I said before, Kobolds occupy a wide variety of biomes. All Kobolds have been observed living in a pack structure, and with a rare few exceptions, only their own variants. Kobolds of other variants are actively hunted down and driven away from their territory. You're never going to see an Aquatic Kobold and a Jungle Kobold get along. One of them is going to end up a meal. Hybrid Kobolds have been observed to exist...but they're such a rare anomaly and only occur under very rare circumstances.
The diet of the Kobold is varied and adapted specific to their environment. While most subsist off of some type of protein and eschew plant material, some Kobolds like Urbans or Bandits will scavenge whatever they can. Kobolds are always on the hunt for food, as their packs sizes are often huge. Kobold packs are highly structured, with specific ones designated to hunt, some to defend, and some to heal.
At the end of the day, the reason we haven't been able to find more out about the Kobolds is that they just don't speak any discernible language. At least, none that we have been able to decipher. Instead they speak in a wide array of sounds, including growls, clicks, squeaks, yips, hisses, and purrs. Body language is more a part of Kobold communication than us dragons, and it seems like a dozen words can be said between two Kobolds with just a single look.
Anyway, as you can see, Kobolds are fascinating little creatures. Though the topic of my studies has shifted since joining the Sorienth Paranormal Research Institute, there are still a number of zoologists, anthropologists, and biologists still studying Kobolds to this very day."

[b]Cave Kobolds
Colors: Maize – Platinum[/b][/center]
Cave Kobolds live in isolated, open, cave systems. They have no eyesight but have excellent hearing and scent. A fairly quiet creature, only being observed to make light, high-pitched chirps, that, combined with the heat pits on the front of their snouts, seem to help them locate prey. Their skin is pale and translucent, and their scales are the softest and weakest of all the Kobold variants. Its advised that this variant of Kobold remain as undisturbed as possible, as being isolated underground for so long has left them vulnerable to the diseases of the surface world.[/columns]

Colors: Silver – Coal[/b][/center]
Cliff Kobolds are a unique variant that have adapted to life on steep cliff sides. Even a few inches of horizontal space becomes a nest for them, which can look terrifying to outsiders. Their claws are longer and more talon-like, and their wings are stronger and more adapted to flight. Their only prey item are birds, which they catch mid-flight, as they never touch solid ground. Overpopulation and territory squabbles are common in this variant as they have no predators that can reach them.[/columns]

Before they know it, the kobold-shaped figures have vanished, leaving no evidence of their existence. That is, of course, except for the little smears of blood across the ground from whatever they hunted the night before. To date, no one has been able to locate any lairs of Ghost Kobolds, and so their society and nesting habits remain a mystery. [/columns]

It's theorized they have their own Deities as well, as they often can be seen gathering in centralized places for apparent worship.[/columns]

Aquatic Kobolds are the most common variant on Soreinth. They are categorized into two types and their colors dictate what body of water they live in. Lighter color Aquatic Kobolds are amphibius and live near lakes and reefs, using webbed feet to guide them through the water. Darker colored ones are fully aquatic, live solely in the ocean, and have adapted rudder-like tails and gills. Oddly, swamps and marshes are devoid of Aquatic Kobolds, perhaps because their territory would overlap with Jungle Kobolds, who are the stronger of the two species.[/columns]

Not only do they exhibit the best coordinated pack tactics as compared to other variants, but they actively craft elaborate traps to use in hunting. Jungle Kobolds are constantly on the move, never settling in one place except once yearly when it's nesting season.[/columns]

Their main tactic is to mimic cries for help to lure in unwitting Dragons into a trap. Then they typically rob the dragon blind, dashing off to store all the goods within their lairs.[/columns]

Flame Kobolds are completely fire retardant, and thrive in the interiors of volcanic mountains, where they rarely stray far from. Their nests are comprised of little rocky crevices within the mountain’s interior and are often softened by layers of ash. Flame Kobold eggs are made of a hard, waxy, substance, and jiggle when they are ready to hatch. Rather than traditional hatching, parents will take the jiggling eggs and submerge them in either scalding hot spring pools or set them by lava pools to physically melt the wax off the eggs and free the trapped hatchlings. Their dens are entirely underground, and their claws are large and blunted to help with digging earth. Since most of their prey is underground, they have adapted to be able feel small vibrations in the sand. Oddly, these Kobolds always seem to know where water is, so if someone is lost in the desert, it would be wise to stalk one until it leads you to an oasis.[/columns]

Toxic Kobolds have been reported to take down prey as large as Imperial Dragons. The venom each Kobold carries is unique to their family's tribe, but are not immune to an outsider's. Therefore clashes between different tribes of Toxic Kobolds are rare.[/columns]

Their nesting habits are very unique - hiding eggs in the nests of Dragons for protection. Once the Kobolds have hatched, they flee out of the Dragon's lair and back to their pack.[/columns]

Some isolated Kobold clans have been documented working together in unique ways to gain more resources. These resulting collaborations often result in hybrid hatchlings. Hybrids are complete genetic wildcards, and their inherited traits are unique to each Kobold. Outside of very specific collaborative packs, hybrids are outcasts as Kobolds are often xenophobic by nature. Once outcasted, they will often seek other hybrids to form makeshift packs with. Hybrid packs are some of the most varied, colorful, and unique Kobold communities.[/columns]

Some isolated Kobold clans have been documented working together in unique ways to gain more resources. These resulting collaborations often result in hybrid hatchlings. Hybrids are complete genetic wildcards, and their inherited traits are unique to each Kobold. Outside of very specific collaborative packs, hybrids are outcasts as Kobolds are often xenophobic by nature. Once outcasted, they will often seek other hybrids to form makeshift packs with. Hybrid packs are some of the most varied, colorful, and unique Kobold communities.

Some say the streaks of color in their hide contain magical powers, but few Kobolds are touched by actual arcane abilities like dragons are. These Kobolds are almost always regulated to “mystics” within packs, and both give wise advice to their kin, or use ancient arts to perform druidic or necromantic spells. They are also capable of learning multiple languages and are typically the bridge of communication between Kobold and dragon clans. However, their grasp of other languages is thin, and can only speak in broken Draconic at best.
