These Nocturnes are nicknamed sugar bats, and for good reason! Legend has it their wings are actually caramelized sugar and their petal-like bodies are from years of cake decor. They hold a natural inclination toward baked goods and cooking skills. Their lineage has given them a leaning toward supreme skill in the kitchen. Cookies, cupcakes, or coffee -- These bats have it all! But the king was unimpressed. “Bake or die,” the king said, “this is your choice.” The chef was given three days to create masterwork cakes that would please the Imperial King. Day and night, the chef worked alone with only sugar for company. Each cake was piled high, massive in proportion, made to feed the largest of dragons. Flour and dough flew through the air. The tiny chef did not sleep, did not eat, only drank sips of water between cakes. There was magic there, deep in the undercroft of the grand castle. Borne across a large leyline, the fortress concentrated the worldly arcana from far and wide. The chef’s passion flamed over the leyline, drawing otherworldly cakes into creation. They flowed and pulsed with magic and the chef found herself afraid. She pursued her goal regardless, fearful more of death. When the flames of the oven died, and the cakes were settled under their decor, the chef emerged from the kitchens. The feast was placed before the Imperial King. “What is this?” the king asked. “You had someone to replace you?” The chef, befuddled, examined herself. The sugar had caramelized her wings. The cake decor had swirled over her body. The magic of her baking had become her true form. “It is me!” And the King recognized her voice, and was satisfied. It was time to taste the cakes themselves. The glorious gathering of Imperials settled one by one to eat. They feasted upon the cakes, but they were endless. When each bite was taken, another bite would appear. They ate and ate and ate. Their gluttony made them fat and fruitless, unable to fly, and the Imperial King demanded answers. “The chef has tricked us!” the King called. “She is to be executed!” But the guards had partaken in the feast, and were too weighty to gain lift. While their colors are from all over the rainbow, there are only a few genes that establish themselves throughout their breeding. Along with these apparent visible markers, Sugar Bats have a natural inclination towards sugar and baked goods. This often leads to a professional interest in the art of baking.
